  • Yeh Hurt takes the Cake for #1 But my opinion is that " All I Could Have Been" comes in a very close second to me. But i'm partial to it, it my favorite song.

  • No Warm Place?

  • hurt is the number 1

  • I think "Right Where it Belongs" should be in the first place of your list.

  • @RabbitPunching I wish I could like your comment 1,000 more times

@FoxGuy777 Zero Sum makes me cry every goddamn time, that and Right Where It Belongs

  • Right Where It Belongs makes me cry almost every time... surprised it isn't on your list.

  • @SongoftheGoddess Anyone that can't still appreciate his old music and accept that it's changed now doesn't sound like a true fan anyway. And where did he say that? I don't recall any instance, nor can I find any...

  • 1. Hurt.

  • @SongoftheGoddess wait, what happened??

  • pure amazing, i swear, you can fall asleep to this, very smoothing for me anyway

  • What about Right Where it Belongs? :(

  • @Misanthropedia Dude I'd say that songs actually kind of happy. It's just serene.

  • Could you please post the link to the video you chose for Something I can Nevr Have? That live take seems to sound awesome

  • there was missing the day the world went away

  • Comment removed

  • Im shocked La Mer didnt make the list.

  • @reaper1545 i was writing the same thing, then i noticed your comment... that track is so fucking powerful

  • Great! I totally agree. I would only add I Do Not Want This. I can really agree with the lyrics, it perfectly describes social anxiety disorder, which I and Trent (and many others) have.

If anyone knew about any music that's depressing in the Nine Inch Nails way, PLEASE let me know. Whenever I search "depressing music" on the Internet, it just finds sad songs. But I like angry-depressing music (like NIN) and I haven't found anything like them. Sucks...

  • @Vojife perhaps not exactly what you meant but System Of a Down or Eisregen works for me .

Alice in Chains had some good stuff as well as Nirvana but it wasn't too much on the agressive side though .

  • I definitely concur with "Something I Can Never Have"... I think it's the deepest and most personal piece that Trent's ever written and composed. It should be #1... "Hurt"... #2.

  • all great picks but you really need A Warm Place for this list to work

  • @iamDIBBS is this double meaning prhase? :)

  • I like trents version much more than cash.

Cash sings it with such a heavy melodramatic ton as trents version is much more intense and integer.

    both great artists though

  • what about Non-Entity???

  • Comment removed

  • I also find All the Love in the World and Lights in the Sky very sad.

  • Lights in the Sky is another that gets me

  • everyday is exactly the same !!!!!!¿?¿?¿?

  • dumbasses.

Trent wrote Hurt & preformed it first. If you looked at the album Cash's version of Hurt was on it also had Bridge Over Troubled Water, Personal Jesus, Desperado, & I Hung My Head. His album "American IV: The Man Comes Around was similar in construction to Tori Amos' Strange Little Girl or Metallica's Garage Inc. in that most of the songs weren't his. However, Trent thought Cash did such a good job he hasn't bothered charging him (or his estate) any royalties over it. So feck off!!

  • HEY IDIOTS, NO DISRESPECT TO CASH, BUT TRENT FUCKING REZNOR WROTE HURT!!!!!

  • @RabbitPunching And Reznor stepped down and said that was no longer his song after Cash covered it... trust me.. I am a hardcore NIN fan. Trent had mad respect for Cash and so do I. Both cash and trent were my idols since I could remember learning how to walk. So Hurt being covered by cash and being created by trent was nothing more than a wet dream come true.

  • @SaintVoorhees I totally agree with you both are amazing artist and writters who I admire and Cash version of Hurt he made his very own

  • @RabbitPunching yeah i like both versions very much and i personally think that if cash covered it then that means there was something cash really respected about the song and it is visible

  • "Hurt" is a song written by Trent Reznor, first released on Nine Inch Nails' 1994 album The Downward Spiral. In 2002, "Hurt" was covered by Johnny Cash to critical acclaim; it was one of Cash's final hit releases before his death.

  • Leaving Hope is the most beautiful song I ever heard. Even though the title is leaving hope, when I listen to this song I feel so much hope and feel that life is beautiful. TRENT IS TRULY AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Trents' made a lot of depressing songs.

  • @mishmoshable Yes. He had social anxiety disorder. Which I have too (very high)

  • @Vojife That wouldn't surprise me. Where did you here about his condition?

  • @mishmoshable Well, on Wikipedia

  • "Everyone I Know Goes Away In The End". Trent you are AMAZING!!!

  • @000500006 That song you are referring to is originally by Johnny Cash. Still, he did a wonderful cover of it.

  • @TheApplesauce3 I think Trent wrote that song first and then Cash did a cover of it.

  • @TheApplesauce3 Reznor wrote it :P

  • @aerocmetallica1995 Ah, you're right. Well then, Johnny Cash did a wonderful cover of it...? :D

  • @TheApplesauce3 Yes, he did :D

  • @TheApplesauce3 No, pretty sure Trent wrote it first. At least that's what wikipedia says.

  • @GamePath I've already confirmed that....

  • In This Twilight is really really sad and beautiful !

    Right Where It Belong too.

  • I think that 'Something I can never have' is not sad, it's about hope.

  • What about In this twilight?

  • I feel that Zero-Sum is under-appreciated.

  • @FoxGuy777 THIS!!!! It took me a long damn time to fully get into Year Zero, but lately I've been really listening to it. That track for some reason stands out so much to me and easily my favorite on the disc. And fitting with "saddest songs"

  • @AeroSS87 I was drifting into and out of sleep while listening to it once and I felt extremely sad and a bit scared. Very powerful song.

  • yeah,And All That Could Have Been!!!

  • The Persistence of Loss

Trent Reznor could play a chainsaw and make it sound like Beethoven

  • @undead432 the original wasnt by johnny cash... sorry

  • No. 1 :/ it sucks tbh, all the other songs were great though.

listen to orig hurt by johny cash, this ver is just missing... something.

  • @undead432

    are you fucking kiddin' me!

  • @faaip0de0oaid alright, my bad, it still doesn't change the fact that this original ver is missing something (imo)

  • @undead432

that is cause you listened first the Cash version. cause i listened the NIN version first and i dont think that is "missing something"

  • @undead432 the original hurt is by nin! not johnny cash! :)

  • @undead432 NIN Hurt is the original. If you actually knew what you were talking about you would know that Cash's last album was all hymns and remakes of rock songs including Hurt.

  • @undead432 the orig hurt is this one xD

Nothing to say about Hurt's cover, but this one is just more touching to me :)

  • @undead432

the original version of hurt was NOT by written cash, you ignorant cunt.

Trent Reznor created it for the downward spiral album, released in 1994!

Johnny Cash covered it in 2002.

  • That "Thank you" at the end was so cheesy LOL

  • And All That Could Have Been & The Great Below are the saddest.

  • In my opinion, And All That Could Have Been is the saddest.

  • @nexsolost

That is one of the most honest & touching. It is the song that describes the commonest case of the cases described by NIN songs. Hence, you feel it is the saddest because it matches your case. I'm not saying it is not the saddest, though.

  • my favorite band for life

  • very nice. Thank you.

  • a warm place hands down

  • where is that's what i get

  • #1 All That Could Have Been

  • What about Fragile? (Heck, even The Frail is pretty sad)

  • @LukasVDornak Umm or you could just tell by the part under the window that says, "Buy "Hurt" on AmazonMP3, iTunes".

  • The last one is "Hurt"

  • @LukasVDornak dude, i knew that before i even opened the window. haha.

  • @coheed987

Heh true, I figured that Something I can never have and Hurt would appear in this video aswell :)

  • The Whole All That Could Have Been [Still] is the saddest album i have ever heard

  • The whole Downward Spiral album should be on here XD Honestly......that album is dangerous. It has the power to make you feel depressed and lost, isolated no matter how well your life is going. Reznor perfectly captured that mood and the sad part is we love it. But you know? what the fuck. Its great fucking music and i think that isolation kinda gives us a bit of peace....its nice to have a bit of silence every once in a while :)

  • Pretty Brilliant...A Warm Place should have been there too...but stiil good good choices.

  • The Downward Spiral is pretty intense too...everything is blue in this world...the deepest shade of mushroom blue...

  • @xbrandonx13 no, its by nine inch nails. johnny cash covered it.

  • @xbrandonx13 nope... Trent Reznor wrote it

  • @xbrandonx13 - johnny cash asked Trent if he could cover it bruv. He knew he was going to die soon, so he wanted a song that could be the perfect end to his life and his musical career . . . he heard hurt and asked Trent if he could cover it.

Lets be honest here, if a dying Trent asked if he could use one of YOUR songs as a finish to his career, you ain't gonna say no, right?

  • great list, except that i more like something i can never have that acustic version :) but great list again

  • trent is 1 miserable cunt!!!

  • No Right Where It Belongs?

  • @Sean19a7x2 True shit, Right where it belongs, is fucking SAD.

  • @Sean19a7x2 Yeah right where it belongs and a Warm place , both songs give me goosebumbs

  • @Sean19a7x2

...I said the exact same thing, and then I scrolled down and seen your comment. Eerie.

  • Nine Inch Nails = nice

  • Hurt isn't a suicidal song, its a conclusion song that says "i accept this". the real suicidal song IS itself, track 13, The Downward Spiral, in which that should have been the end of the album instead.

  • I was REALLY hoping that "And All That Could Have Been" would be on here. This video is meaningless without it.

  • hurt is probably the saddest song I've ever heard.

  • You're missing Hurt

  • we dont call this sad....we call it NIN..if people need a tutorial they dont need to hear it

  • amazing songs but i rekon leaving hope should be first...just

  • You should write "IMO" in title of this video :)

  • What bout A Warm Place?

  • @Venddenta tech. a david bowie song......however trent gave it life

  • @Venddenta Dude I fucking agree. It brings tears. It'd be up there, if not number 1, if I made one

  • @Venddenta I always thought of A Warm Place as a soothing, more calm song.. But I suppose in a sinister way. Kinda like a serial killer relaxing after his previous murder.

  • @Venddenta so true! It doesn't have lyrics but when I listen to it I get so depressed. It's still beautiful, I'd love to hear it on an organ..

  • @Venddenta A Warm Place should be number 1 !!!!!!

  • @Venddenta

I think a warm place has a more positive message

  • @Venddenta I can't tell whether that's their saddest or happiest song...

  • @maledictorchid that was beautiful man...

  • Todo el Still es un disco muy triste. Lo amo.

  • Something I can never have ...........definately the saddest for me. It is a song of total despair. Maybe the saddest rock song ever IMO.

  • leaving hope scares me. the frail and lights in the sky always get to me too.

  • Seriously..

    Right where it belongs?

  • the downward spiral is a great one, and most of the songs on the album "Still" GO NIN

  • look at the key words :o

  • The first one is definitely Leaving Hope, for me...

  • Right on the dot. All of these definitely have reminders of sad emotions.

  • Hurt still blows me away after many years.

  • no way. you cant compare cashs to reznors version. nothing compares to the original...

  • ithink marilyn manson and nine inch nails can make songs that makes sad but they are good

  • I've like several of nine inch nails songs but i have to say Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" was better.

    Look it up.

  • @inyourmind11 I think Cash's version applies more to the feelings of regret you have at the end of life. Being of a young age, Trents applies more to me.

  • @Tekar111 Yes I agree with your interpretation of Cash's version. But from a purely musical standpoint Cash's is better. By purely musical I mean removing relating to one of them. Also neither really apply to me I'm young just not sad... ever really.

  • @inyourmind11 ehhh, i like the chords in the NIN version way better

  • @inyourmind11 R U KIDDING??? It was trent's song...

  • Ghosts 34 IV.....

  • Lights in the Sky definitely needs to be added to this list. Another great, dark Trent masterpiece.

  • IMMA LET YOU FINISH BUT TRENT REZNOR IS DA BEST ARTIST OF ALL TIME!

  • his music is one of my personal savior....

  • I remember when i was 14 I couldn't stop listening to hurt. It made me depressed but felt good at the same time.

  • HURT?>????????

  • The fragile is the perfect mix of sadness and tranquility...love it

  • probably one of the 10 best "bands" of the music history...

  • "A Warm Place" is my NIN sad song. frontwards and backwards.

  • trent should start using drugs again because everything after the fragile sucks. I was a big fan till he started making bad dance music

  • @EASTENDGLEN no year zeros the only one that sucked bad everything kicked ass

  • @22rawrrawr yeah whatever fluffs your hair man but every band has its day in the sun and its GONE.

I downloaded year zero and threw it out. DELETE

LOOK AT ACDC THEY DIED WITH BON SCOTT RAN OUT OF HIS MATERIAL AFTER THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK

SAME TIRED RIFFS OVER AND OVER LYRICS THAT ARE 2 PHRASES OVER AND OVER

BUT MOST ARE AS BAD difference between pop fan and a music fan

  • @EASTENDGLEN dude i couldnt agree more i didnt like acdc after bon scott and year zero was just to like dance for me and really political but the fragile was about godly and a half i loved the fragile nine inch nails will always be in my top ten no matter what they went to ill always love them was a little disapointed with how to destroy angels but maybe just maybe nin well get back someday

  • @22rawrrawr we allways want more, and our society teaches us this. I am content with the 5 albums before that

  • @EASTENDGLEN SMOKE CHOKE CROAK YOU WANKING IDIOT

  • Right where it belongs, no choice.

  • Whenever I practice acting or crying (for those who are aspiring actresses/actors) I listen to these songs to get my tears flowing: -Something I can never have -The Frail (because it's so beautiful) -And All That Could Have Been -A Warm Place -The Downward Spiral -Hurt and sometimes Right Where It Belongs But even when I'm not, these songs are awesome and beautiful songs just to listen to when you're feeling a buncha emotions build up inside of you. Its a great heartbreak, Luv ya Trent
  • haha, let's forget the "to suicide with" part, because right know I feel I could to it... just for a heartbreak, like when you're really heart broken and you know it was the best but a part of you is still stuck with that person... when all the memories around a city form a nightmare you're trapped in, when all your fears come true :)

  • listen to lights in the sky another sickeningly sad song by NIN

  • I don't agree : In This Twilight and Right Where It Belong are saddest

  • Sounds like Robbie Williams put on a record player going at half speed. This artist is seriously overrated.

  • @firearms2k what the fuck have you been listening too

  • @sambadoynum Nine Inch Nails apparently.

  • @firearms2k lol

  • @NINTR170565 Have you not heard the studio version of @something i can never have'? so good!

  • one of nine inch nails saddest songs is thats what i get everyone can relate to that song i hope

  • I heard 'Hurt' live.... Woosh, i won't forget that for sure. It was more awesome and saddening that everything i could imagine before.

  • The name of the last song is 'Hurt'.

  • i think zero sum is pretty sad

  • hey i love nine inch nails and i like how they make the sad songs but i always wonder why , is the singer depressed

  • @ocd69penguin you couldn't possibly begin to understand unless you've been depressed yourself to be honest.... being depressed myself i think it's a mixture of bad experiences from his past that he can't get rid of now...

  • i was shocked to see hurt as #1 i was expecting wish lol

  • @TheNineinchsnails if u listen to the lyrics and shit and ur depressed it makes u like 10 million times sadder

  • I think "I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally" should be on the list somewhere. I mean you really don't get more depressing than asking your deceased grandmother "could I please come with you? Sweet smell of sunshine...I remember sometimes...."

    Dude.

    =)

  • The version of A Warm Place w/ Stella Soleil is pretty fucking pretty. And melancholy.

  • No one writes sad songs as Trent Reznor, he's soo underrated nowadays

  • I didn't like the version of Something I Can Never Have you posted... It definitely was not a good representation of Trent's voice.

  • Well, I think everybody knew that #1 was going to be Hurt. I mean, come one, it's pretty obvious, you can't have a list of sad nin songs without Hurt. lol.

  • if i could like this vid i would be youtube is gay!! fuck you youtube for changing

  • in addition, i liked your choice of pictures, the one with the black and white tree was exceptionally good at protraying the sadnees. It looks so desolate.

  • You forgot 2 of the most sad songs, Zero-sum and Everything where it belongs

  • @CaptainKrashy

    And Lights in the Sky!

  • @CaptainKrashy

you mean right where it belongs mate :P

  • "right where it belongs" indeed :-)

  • I dunno. It was good until the last one, I just don't think Hurt is that good of a song. It's not that it's a bad song, it's just that everyone thinks it's so good and it's the greatest song ever and, really, it's not.

  • i pride myself on being a lover of music period, but i have NEVER cosistantly listened to a band and them have such a profound effect on me. Trent is trully a master, conveying exactly what he wants not only through his voice or words but it shines through in the music itself. From every drum beat being a heart beat to every melody being the blood coursing through your viens truly the most talented musician of all time. long live trent reznor

  • @maledictorchid I agree. There are only a few artists I like consistently but NIN and Reznor's work is the exception where I love pretty much everything he's ever done. He comes from a place no one else has come from and has touched me in a way no other artist has. I think it's because he truly understands what the struggle is like, I've come out of it now and I'm glad to say that he has too. Listening to these songs makes it all the more worth it.

  • @maledictorchid ...R U kidding???Hope not Hype...I don't feel sadness...just the TRUE human experience thru his words!...

  • @maledictorchid ok and it only gets better!!!

  • awesome!!! :)
