@RageAgainstAuthority False. They were ordered by Horus before he declared his betrayal to go to Calth and were ambushed by the Word Bearers and were nearly crippled. Horus knew the Ultramarines would be trouble so he sent them completely in the opposite direction of Terra. After escaping the ambush, the crushed Chaos reinforcements along the way but arrived after the war had already been won.

They were also the first Chapter to successfully repel a Tyranid invasion.

As for the first part, a lot of people only know the factions and none of the 'fluff' of the 40k franchise (let alone any other chapter's history, except the Blood Ravens) so introducing, let's say, the Space Wolves would throw a lot of people through a loop. I wouldn't mind seeing a unique chapter, but if fans want the 40k franchise to grow, we'll have to expect people to be stupid and give them simplicity.

They can call space marines as heretics and have forces of Inquisitions hunt them down, look at the Soul Drinkers and other space marine chapters that were either wiped out or not. The Inquisitors are the ones who scrutinize the space marines the most to see if they are corrupted. Inquisitors even scrutinize each other to see if they are corrupted. They can call anyone heretic and kill them
