I love the Russian fairy tale films. The sets, costumes, colors, music and atmosphere -all so much more true and engaging than any Hollywood adap. I agree that they're not as slick, but they have a helluva lot more soul.

@melsibrith Me too. It's a more hopeful ending and a more well deserving reward for her sacrifice to save the prince even more so since she saved him twice in this movie I believe. I think it's better than her deal where if someone sacrifices their life for her she gets to live on Earth forever as a spirit. That's why I don't see the point of this deal in this movie. She'll become a spirit no matter what so it's probably better that she die and go to heaven instead.

This is more like the original story by Hans Christian Andersen. In his story she became a "Daughter of the Air" because the prince didn't marry her and that was part of the deal she made with the sea witch not knowing that on land a prince must marry a princess. If she had killed the prince she would have turned back to a mermaid, but she spared him and in return she did not die, but changed form.
That was quite a bad performance in the sword scene. lol

I think Andersen changed the ending and added the part of her becoming a daughter of the wind. retrospectively, because the original ending was too depressing.

Because, unlike that Disney crap, this has a plot and a moral. Every scene shows that the team put their heart and soul into the film. It's just pure magic.

The mermaid is in love with the prince. The deal was that she could become human but one of the consequences of the prince not returning her feelings was that her heart would break and she would die. The prince marries someone else.

Ok the stabbing part was pretty bad. VERY bad. But I loved the rest of the movie..
I think the ending can be interpreted in a few ways: the prince may be hallucinating in his guilt or she became a spirit who decides to haunt him..
