I disagree about the "ADD ON" comment in regards to Bono. Bono has been a total veteran in the music industry. He's a LEGEND right even before Andrea Corr was born, geez. Get it right.
It's good to see that someone like Bono who is a very talented and successful musician is also a decent person. Married to the same woman for 29 years, extensive humanitarian efforts, etc. Unlike many people in this industry who act like overgrown children or worse. It saddens me to say that this is NOT a very good vocal performance for Bono. Truth be told, there are are only a handful of U2 songs that I like, and many of them were done early in their career. Bono's voice doesn't have a lot of natural range, and he seems to have gotten lazy by not extending the words at the end of the phrases. Everything seems clipped & short. Maybe it's becuz he can't carry the notes anymore. Makes me, a poor Irishman, feel very sad. :(

@BonoWeCanBeOne You're not unique. There are millions like you whose bias has brought on tone deafness while dimishing their musical taste. There are some great U2 songs, just as there are some superior bands to U2 who have never reaped the accolades or the financial rewards. Just as well. U2 are now tiresome troubadours dutifully following The Rolling Stones. They're only about 2300 hotel suites behind them.
@hugosalarm U2 are the greatest band of all time whether you admit it or not and still have that fire to create great music and are not washed up. Some of U2's best songs are from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, and NO LINE. Sometimes You Cant Make It On Your Own is easily a top 5 U2 song and the best song of the 00's. My musicial taste is just fine, I just seek a little jealousy from you that U2 have the greatest musicians in the world, and they still make great music.

heh well i guess its just a matter of taste, however i woulnt consider Kurt to be a Bono imitator, He did his initial audition perfroming one of his own songs. Definatly in a competition i would choose songs that i could do well and have lots of appeal and recognition like any U2 song. looking at the body of his work after world idol i see that hes put out a couple of albums of original material and experimented with a wide variety of genres.
For myself my preference is Venke Knutson and Kurt Nilsen version, i realise this is a live performance but a little disjointed. Venke and Kurt's version seems to run together so well - have to watch it with eyes closed though cos shes a bit over the top with the sexy eyes thing
@ThePataks But Kurt is pretty much a Bono imitator, he sang mostly U2 songs because he's voice were quite similar. I find Bono's voice warmer and no matter how hard he tries he will never sounds so awfully over the top as Kurt.
Spudder, cough, cough. Bono not a singer? No this isn't his best vocal performance. But, Bono has one of the only albums that I can listen to almost everything on. Joshua Tree? Any of you remember what he sounded like then? Amazing doesn't touch it. Check out With or Without You if you don't believe me, or Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for. You don't have to like him we all have our opinions, but I've always loved his songs.

Sure, you can tell bands from each other by the singer's voice and all that, but you can tell a U2 song from any five seconds. Ryan, like countless other musicians, has obvious moments of that sound that had never existed before U2. Sorry.

@BonoWeCanBeOne You're not unique. There are millions like you whose bias has brought on tone deafness while dimishing their musical taste. There are some great U2 songs, just as there are some superior bands to U2 who have never reaped the accolades or the financial rewards. Just as well. U2 are now tiresome troubadours dutifully following The Rolling Stones. They're only about 2300 hotel suites behind them.

@hugosalarm U2 are the greatest band of all time whether you admit it or not and still have that fire to create great music and are not washed up. Some of U2's best songs are from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, and NO LINE. Sometimes You Cant Make It On Your Own is easily a top 5 U2 song and the best song of the 00's. My musicial taste is just fine, I just seek a little jealousy from you that U2 have the greatest musicians in the world, and they still make great music.

I'm sorry I can't name 50 bands since the early 80's who are more talented than U2 but I can name 49!. Truth be told U2 haven't had a good day since "It's A Beautiful Day".Sloganeering isn't soul. Edge's guitar wallpapers over some often pretty abyssmal lyrics. Please remain blissfully unaware or real talent: Ian McCullough,Richard Butler, Ryan Adams.

@BonoWeCanBeOne I have been a hardcore U2 fan since the early 80s and i just recently saw my 50th U2 show. I disagree with your statement about U2 not have any bad songs.. Some of their songs are horrible and should be thrown out the window.. "White as Snow" makes me want to throw up. I could name at least 30 songs that just torture my ears.. Passengers..nuf said!!

Call me a fool but I believe when you're writing for the arena and its rabble, you are rarely writing from the soul. With or Without You,(haunting guitar, shit lyrics), Sunday(meaningful to the Irish), Pride and One, ( brilliant), Streets, (absolute rubbish). You never mentioned All That You Can't Leave Behind or Who"s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses. Great songs. So viva evangelism, (sort of.)

@odeamusic I know that being a wealthy humanitarian/philanthropist today requires that you vacation in St. Barts as well as tackle the issues of AIDS and hunger in the Horn of Africa, but God bless Bono for his activism and commitment. By the way if you sat him down and had a few Guinnesses I'd bet he'd admit that fellow Irishmen, Cactus World News, was a far better band than U2 could ever hope to be. CWN had a brief moment of glory, U2 has had several of them. Kudos to them for that.

It is my feeling, hence my opinion, that "When Stars Go Blue" says something to me personally that is more meaningful and beautiful, (if only by a bit) than anything Bono has ever written. Once again, Bono and U2 have created some brilliant music. By the way, he suffocates the life out of "this" song with the flat delivery of the line "When stars go blue." Sorry for calling you stupid. @odeamusic You might have a less contentious attitude towards my original statement, (or maybe not), if I tell you that U2's "All That You Can't Leave Behind" has a similar effect on me as the song under discussion. They are direct and personal statements with the power to greatly "influence" the listener, (this listener). Psychoanalysis might explain musical tastes to some extent but you'd have to have money to burn if you're making problems of your pleasures. Good talkin' to you.

heh well i guess its just a matter of taste, however i woulnt consider Kurt to be a Bono imitator, He did his initial audition perfroming one of his own songs. Definatly in a competition i would choose songs that i could do well and have lots of appeal and recognition like any U2 song. looking at the body of his work after world idol i see that hes put out a couple of albums of original material and experimented with a wide variety of genres.

For myself my preference is Venke Knutson and Kurt Nilsen version, i realise this is a live performance but a little disjointed. Venke and Kurt's version seems to run together so well - have to watch it with eyes closed though cos shes a bit over the top with the sexy eyes thing

@ThePataks But Kurt is pretty much a Bono imitator, he sang mostly U2 songs because he's voice were quite similar. I find Bono's voice warmer and no matter how hard he tries he will never sounds so awfully over the top as Kurt.

Spudder, cough, cough. Bono not a singer? No this isn't his best vocal performance. But, Bono has one of the only albums that I can listen to almost everything on. Joshua Tree? Any of you remember what he sounded like then? Amazing doesn't touch it. Check out With or Without You if you don't believe me, or Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for. You don't have to like him we all have our opinions, but I've always loved his songs.

Sure, you can tell bands from each other by the singer's voice and all that, but you can tell a U2 song from any five seconds. Ryan, like countless other musicians, has obvious moments of that sound that had never existed before U2. Sorry.

It's true, Ryan Adams is perhaps not as recognisible as U2 are, but isn't it a fair point that that could be down to the fact that no one wants to sound like them? That's not to say no one was influenced by them, but you're confusing popularity with importance.
