This one worried me as a kid. I didn't like how all the pretty ladies were removed one by one. I thought that each of them landed somewhere alone in the scary darkness. I was also irritated that they continued to smile and sing after someone would disappear like they didn't care.
Funny how kids would interpret things that adults would see as benign.
Looks like the last dancer is standing on the trapdoor when it opens on her instead of dancer three who "hops" into her trapdoor. I don't think it's possible to be totally prepared for the floor to drop out under your feet, especially if they dropped her even a split second before she is expecting it. They may have done this considering she went down in the middle of her last word. It made for a great facial reaction on that pretty face.
Does anoyone have the Sneak Peek Previews version of this skit? Although the subtracted dancers part is exactly the same, I remember that Telly and Oscar's comments on this skit were pretty entertaining.
It's a shame Sesame Street only made two films featuring the 5 Dancers, it would have been nice to see more of them. I just adored those ladies so much.
I believe this subtraction skit was incorporated into Oscar and Telly's "Sneak Peek Preview" sketches where they would spoof Siskel and Ebert. They would come into a movie theater, watch a short clip and re-act. If I remember correctly, Telly thought the ladies were adorable but was sad at the end when the girls were all gone. Of course, that was Oscar's favorite part.
I'm guessing this might be the variation, or possible third, sketch you were thinking of?
I remember this fondly. As the other people who posted here indicate, maybe someone will eventually find and post the other 'five dancers' skit on YouTube (i.e. the one where they 'introduce themselves.')
Hey! Glad to see this back up. I went and found the pic of the fabled other skit on MUPPET WIKI. You gotta go to the site and search 0815. That'll give you an episode guide FOR THAT EP. It was tricky but I found it. I can't believe there's no DVD with this on it. Anyhoo... Why is it that every time I turn around my favorite YOUTUBE clip keeps getting taken off??? How offensive IS this thing?? Laters...
the five dancers are awesome. no wonder i grew up to love those nice dancer legs. hah!
does anyone remember a skit from the early 1980's that involved maria as a circus assistant and luis/gordon as a clown who had maria balance six milk bottles that were supposedly full, but were really empty when she couldn't balance them anymore? i can't find a reference to that skit anywhere and wondered if anyone knows what i'm talking about.
Special thanks to Johnny for posting this again. As for the other "five dancers" sketch, there will be 57 bonus segments on "Sesame Street-Old School" Vol. 2..so maybe we'll get lucky..
The other video about the "five dancers" is on SS Episode 0815 on Wiki. There is a small picture from the skit but no video. Hopefully someone will post it. I have been looking for that video forever.
I've always liked this clip! I know sesame street did another version with them according to the sesame street wiki website. I'd love to see that one be posted here!
I remember it now. nearly forgotten for years.

If they did a remake of the 5 dancing women, they would use Carmen Electra; Kirsten Dunst; Natalie Portman; Jessica Biel and Lindsay Lohan.

@thezaylady I especially felt bad for the 4th girl: the way the last girl sort of gets rid of her with the "Me?" "You!"

Does anyone know if this is available on DVD anywhere and if so what DVD is it?!

#1.) How did she echo "one" at the very end?
#2.) What was the cartoon about at 0:48? The 2 kids look VERY familiar!

Where are these dancers today?

Look at the face of the last dancer and she looked like she was not ready to down down the trap door. Watch it in slow
motion or stop it when she is the last one

I could have sworn there was a third one that did subtraction again. But I could be wrong.

At the end of this video, where did those 5 dancing ladies go?

I remember as a kid being kind of sad watching them all disappear one by one like that.
