Those things look FANTASTIC... we are first time cloth diapering parents. Well, not first time PARENTS but first time using cloth diapers! We use Kissaluvs and covers. I will have to look into these BumGenius AIO's.
Kids pee, poop, and throw up on their clothes all the time, and they go in the washer. Plus, any chunks of poo are removed (flushed down the toilet) before going in the wash anyways. ;-)
The washer washes it *all* away and there's nothing left or "lingering" after we do diaper laundry.
plus most people don't know this but you're supposed to flush poo out of disposable diapers too, since landfills aren't set up to dispose of human feces. So you're not really saving yourself any steps by having disposable diapers!
@SamSamiSamanthaLea Also, I understand if the mother is only breastfeeding, the mess is going to be a lot easier to wash anyway. I don't have a child, but I sure have friends who know this stuff.
I am completely new to cloth diapering and just got an AIO. Do you put the insert into the pocket that is inside the diaper? I ahave seen people leave it out, so that is why I am wondering.
I am so glad you are posting these videos. I think SO MANY parents buy into the myths that it's "too much work", etc. Cloth is slightly messier since you have to dump poop in the toilet and wash the diapers, but you are already cleaning poop off baby's bums anyway, so why not clean the diapers too? Most mammals have a way of dealing with their waste, and tossing something into a landfill isn't a sustainable way to do it.
for those who have lots of questions about cloth diapering, do a google search for "thediaperpin". a great website with how-to's, reviews, links to online stores, etc
I haven't read through all the comments, so I apologize if I ask a question that's already been asked? Inserts? What are those and how many come with a diaper and do you have to buy those separately?? The inserts are washable, correct?
Hi. :-) Inserts are used for pocket diapers, not all-in-ones (like the diaper in this video). AIO's have everything they need sewn into the diaper and functions EXACTLY like a disposable.
Pocket diapers are just like a 'sposie except that the absorbant part is added by using an "insert" made out of absorbant materials. Some brands come with an insert, some you have to buy it seperate. Yes, they are washable. ;-)
There are a LOT of online stores that sell cloth diapers. Unfortunately, usually online is the only place you can buy good quality cloth diapers. You may find some Gerber prefolds at WalMart or something like that... but most CD'ing parents STRONGLY recommend *against* Gerber prefolds. They are not very good.
Try DIAPERMAMA in MI--her all in one diapers have a plastic liner inside. Reasonably priced :D FREE shipping on all orders :D Several of my friends have placed orders with her with great results. Discount for repeat orders.
A pocket diaper is like an All-in-One (meaning you don't need a cover as it already has a waterproof layer), except the absorbent material separates from the diaper. The advantage of this over an AIO is that since you can separate it, they diaper typically dries faster than an AIO, and it can get cleaner than an AIO. The disadvantage is that there is an extra step (stuffing the insert and pulling it out after use).
You do not need to hand wash your diapers at all. Twice a week (which is when I do diaper laundry), I load the washer, put it on a cold rinse with no detergent (this gets stains out), then on a hot wash with about 1/4 cup detergent. Sometimes, if I feel it's necessary, I'll run another cold rinse. Then they go in the dryer. All-in-all... it takes me about 5 minutes. I only spend about 10 minutes a week "caring" for our cloth diapers. ;-)
It's an AIO (All-In-One), which means that everything you need is all in the diaper. It literally goes on and off JUST like disposables. No stuffing, no folding, nothing needs to be added. On and off just like a 'sposie. ;-)
Thanks! Yes, we have used those since he was a newborn (he's now 15 months old). And yes, they come in different sizes... usually "Small, Medium, and Large", though many companies also make "XSmall/Newborn and XLarge".
Some brands also make One-Size diapers that will last from birth to potty training. ;-)
I spend about 10 minutes, max of "work" on our cloth diapers a WEEK. We only do diaper laundry about once ever three days (so about twice a week), and all it entails is throwing a load of laundry into the washer and dryer, which takes about 5 minutes to do.
Replace taking the trash full of 'sposies out a couple times a week (and going to the store to get more) with putting a load of laundry in. You don't even have to fold them if you don't want. ;-)
Thanks! How many diapers do you need to have around to last 3 days? What do you do when you're out and about? Normally you'd just toss the soiled nappy in the rubbish bin, but with cloth you have to take them with you. How do you contain the smell in the diaper bag? :-)
To have enough to wash only twice a week, you'd need about 36 diapers for size newborn and small, and about 18-24 for size medium and large. (there are also one-sized diapers that are pretty neat too)
When we're out at about, we carry a travel "wet-bag" with us. It's a waterproof bag that zips up to contain any smell. I bring about 5-6 diapers, about 10 or so cloth wipes and a squirt bottle of water for the wipes. It's pretty simple. ;-) I even went on a 12 hour flight with him and...
...and just used cloth diapers, and it went totally fine! Just instead of throwing the diaper in the public trash (which honestly, I sometimes find slightly rude as it stinks up the place, ya know?), I throw it in the waterproof (and usually smell proof) bag. I take care of the diapers when we get home. ;-)
a bunch. That's a lot of diapers. :) Just figured about $720 for newborn. If we do try it, and it works for us, Grandma will for sure have to help us. :P Oh, also, how do they stack up against disgustables diapers? Do the cloth leak or spill more?
Well for newborns, I definitely recommend getting mostly prefolds, that will reduce your cost a LOT! And in the newborn/small stage, your baby doesn't move around all that much so they are actually pretty easy to put on (see my video with Seamus getting a prefold on). We had 24 prefolds and 10 AIOs for the size small stage, and 8 covers. THat cost us under $300... and lasted us 6 months (plus we get to use them on future children).
For size medium, we have 12 prefolds (for back up) and...
...and about 12 pocket diapers and AIOs. To save money, we used the infant prefolds from size small as inserts for the pocket diapers. Again, our total was about $300.
I don't think he'll ever need size large, but if he does, it shouldn't cost us more than $100.
So total is about $700... which is WAY less than how much 'sposies would cost (not including that these can be reused with future children).
We rarely have leak issues and he's only had a poop blowout twice in his life.
Thank you thank you thank you! (one for each reply) :P Prefold, pocket, AIO.. Heads spinning. So when are you coming up for the real life demo?! You can hold the baby. :P
It's a cloth diaper. Cloth diapers reduce diaper rash. He did not have a diaper rash for the entire first year of his life, while several people I know who use disposables with their children have had diaper rash after diaper rash.
( I hope the 1st part of my comment posted already-there's a word limit, ah!) Would it be ok if I emailed you sometime with some questions? Those diapers are really cute, looks much easier than changing a traditional cloth diaper. Your Seamus is a cutie patootie as well!

(right? thats how you wash cloth diapers?)

so I read all the comments, and the cloth diapers seem to be a lot better than disposable.
a couple questions,
Whats a pocket diaper?
can the cloth diapers be washed in a washing machine on a "delicate" or "handwash" function, or do you have to let them soak/handwash yourself?
Moonshine148 3 years ago

So, and one more. I am thinking about getting the One Size diaper, rather than the AIO. What have you heard about these?
BTW, he is sooo beautiful.
balvarez01 3 years ago
I have sooo many questions. We are expecting our first child in 6 months, and I think I am really committed to getting Bumgenuises. So if I may:
1. Will they fit a new born, say 6 lbs?
2. How many will I need so that I only need to do diaper laundry twice a week or so?
3. What do you do when you travel?
4. How to best wash them to get all stains out, keep them fresh, keep the tabs strong etc.? I want to see if I can use them on future children.
So excited!! :) Thanks for your help.
balvarez01 3 years ago
with these bumgenius all-in-one's, do you have to insert a liner or anything? or is the absorption sufficient in the diaper without anything added?
