Really I think the straw is seconday. Straw or no straw the car has about 70 gallons of jet fuel in it. Does not matter if the entire track is made of asbestos, it's gonna go up like a refinery.
@Zoomer30 A gasoline engine cannot burn jet fuel. (although a diesel engine can) Jet fuel is a high grade kerosene. Fill your car up with kerosene and see what happens.
straws are CHEAP and they absorb cars better than you think. However they were not nearly enough to save a driver coming at insane speeds.
Also back then the possibility that a driver could get killed was sort of "part of motorracing", and the risks were "acceptable". As the death toll rose in the 60's they realized this madness couldn't go on.

In other video we see no straw barrier buring together with the car. There was a straw barrier burning, but was not side with the car or near it.
