  • The Professional (?) Baritones today haven't the vaguest idea how to sing like this as all great Baritones sang in the past

  • @MrSkylark1 Check out Thomas Hampson; he's terrific!!!

    watch?v=AZLAeUDLnxs

  • @SatchmoSings

Appreciated, but not in the class of Tibbett, John Charles Thomas and Heinrich Schlusnus

  • Gobbi was a great actor and interpreter, but Tibbett's voice is much better.

  • Preferisco la versione di Tito Gobbi! Le parole sono scandite meglio da Tito

I still prefer Tito Gobbi's version! Words are pronounced better by Tito!

  • I understand that singers aim to put the vowel on the beat when a word begins with a consonant. The effect should be that the singers voice stays in time with the accompaniment. However, how tight this relationship is depends on the style of music being performed as well as interpretation. One would not want to hear too much disconnect in baroque or classical styles.

  • Singing like this makes me wish time travel were possible, and that I could be in the audience at the Met to hear him in person. He does get ahead of the orchestra at times, but the voice is marvelous.

  • @Lightseeker001 A good singer of any kind, will sing ahead of the beat at times, IF it serves a musical purpose.

There are other singers, for example, that generally always sing behind the beat; Frank Sinatra is perhaps the most known this way.

One singer that is always AHEAD of the beat was Al Jolson.

A really good singer will mix it up to make "good musical sense;' that's one of the things that makes music interesting to listen to.

  • Please keep this up on YOUTUBE, it is the best version of this song

  • absolutely the best version f Largo Al Factotum

  • Listen to the range and resonance of this great voice.

  • Listen to the range and resonance of this great voice.

  • If only the children of today would listen to this type of music maybe class will come back to what we listen to on the radio and on TV.

Find me someone who can even come close to this version and I will be very stunned. This singer is the best at what he does and no one even knows about him. American Idol judges would not know how to deal with such a talent.

    Danny From Long Island.

  • @lihothand "Rap" outsells Jazz and Classical Music put together.

Look at the anger of many Justin Bieber fans when Esperanza Spalding beat him out for a Grammy.

Before the advent of long-play records, classical record sales were about 30% of the market.

  • i absolutely agree. I used to listen to this on the old 78s and there has been no voice or interpretation to come anywhere near this. Not even Tito Gobbi.

  • When I was a boy my Father would play Lawrence and we would sing together. This version is the best, please keep it on the net and thank you for posting this wonderful peice of music it should last forever where music lovers will listen.

    Danny Long Island

  • Such wonderful color and dexterity in his voice.

I know of very singers (tenors included) who can thrill of to three consecutive Bb's with such ease and elegance.

Voices like his are nonexistent today.. I wish more Baritones would take after his example, they all seem to sound so "woofy" and pushed nowadays.

Truly one of the most beautiful bel canto voices of the past.

    Bravo

  • @CarmenMirandasHat Generally, baritones are overall better singers than tenors simply because the baritone rage is what is natural for a man so the pool that can be drawn upon this way is obviously so much larger.

For a man to be able to sing a half-octave higher (tenor) and to do it WELL is what makes great tenors such a rarity by comparison.

  • Some of those passages left me breathless, never mind him...Sublime

  • Tibbett's voice--AND his incredible acting ability--were incomparable amongst opera singers! Truly the gold standard. Thank you SO MUCH!

  • I listened to this as a child, 50-odd years ago, on 78 rpm disks. Truly the gold standard. Thank you for making this available here.

  • I listened to this as a child 15 years ago on my parents' old records - love it :)

  • Wonderful Tibbett--a Met star for many years--here is the reason why. Thank you.
