I would highly suggest Tales of Vesperia. It takes a few hours for the story to pick up cus it seems cliche at first, but it turns out to be pretty solid. One of the better jrpgs in the current generation. Don't know what your personal likes are in a battle system since you don't like it most in jrpgs, but I liked ToV's battle style personally. Okami is anouther favorite of mine, but that's for a whole other reason.
Xenogears hands down had me addicted for months best storyline ever. Jrpg now lack the gripping story I've been disappointed so many times when getting a knew one I quit and got mass effect the rest is history. : (
I like Chrono, Megaten (and Persona), Final Fantasy 4 & 6, the Golden Sun games. I prefer JRPG parodies like earthbound and the Mario RPG's. Dragon Quest games are OK. The problem with JRPG's is that Fallout 1&2 and some Bioware games are better RPG's.
@TheKestevon Ironically its made by a Japanese developer, but yes it is a great yet difficult game, mabey Japan is realizing that WRPG is the way to go if they want more international appeal finnally they are evolving their rpgs over there lol
I bet western developers if given chances they won't never make a great JRPG since most of them lack skills at making the best storytelling, impressive turn-based gameplay and the most obvious is having inferior art style.ANIME >>>>American comic.FACT
@TheKestevon really fact, you simply are making conjecture nothing else you are stating subjective ideas ie good story good art style as if they were true for everyone, I for one can't stand anime, nor can I stand the plots of most JRPGs I think they are trying to be something they are not (literary master pieces) which in the end makes them convoluted over done and cliche, thusly less time is spent in developing gameplay, which is the main reason I sta
@TheKestevon again extrodinary claims require extrodinary evidence, if marvel super heroes are so shitty then how is it they have lasted the better part of a century unlike virutally any anime character
@TheKestevon which is the main reason I stay away from JRPGs is their un evolving lackluster gameplay, I can take the same art style for virtually every game and even a over exxaggerated B movie plot if the game play is good, the fact is WRPGs have greater immersion and replayability than their JRPG counter parts, they allow the player to "play" the game not force a heavy handed plot that prompts them to cycle through menues after a fancy CG cinematic,
@TheKestevon also while being objective please explain why it is a fact that turn based gameplay is better than real time? After all turn based gameplay in "fact" breaks the immersion and fluididty of gameplay, honestly none of this matters because the free market obviously has decided that WRPGs are preferred over JRPGs (at least for this gen of consoles) because WRPGs are selling more internationally than JRPGs so much so that Japan had to step up and create one lol
only jrpg's i've played outside of final fantasy, are chrono trigger, mario rpg, and parasite eve, if that counts... but i've played most of the final fantasies.....
oh and i did play nier, sotc and demon souls, but i don't think they count either...
Demon Souls is a Japanese western made-style rpg & does a better job than western devs making their own type of game!. Try that then ttry to play oblivion 4 or fallout 3 again.
actually Jap devs are so great for making a decent melee combat gameplay.some people are so stupid to say TES melee combat the best battle gameplay ever.
@TheKestevon melee gameplay is agreeably somewhat flawed in the elder scrolls (it doesn't detract from the game however after all its not an action game) in fact Kingdoms of Amalur is looking to have some of the best melee rpg combat ever, I'd say you should check it out but you obviously seem to think practically everything from Japan is far superior to anything the west has to offer
Basically everyone is trying to come to the ultimate happy medium & make Deus Ex! 1 or System Shock 2 lol. 1 thing though ALL games made by Todd & bethesda have the sound effects & animation totaly wrong & archaic! the swords & guns sound like cheap slashes & the "pop" in fallout 3 sounds like pop cans or just..OFF. j-rpgs especially final fantasies may have a rock paper siccors battle system since 90's TRUE but the sound effects sound superb & dealing an attak/spell sounds 100 times better!!
Uh, you've played how many of these games? Since you didn't play many SNES games I'm going to assume you haven't played many and therefore don't know enough about this topic to be making such a statement.
You should check out Persona 3 or Shadow Hearts 1 and 2. Awesome storylines/characters and better than your average combat jrpg system. All the current gen rpgs blow except LO.
how can you stand JRPG storylines when their all the same?
If your a REAL gamer and a REAL hardcore RPG fan, you'd appreciate REAL RPG's such as Fallout out, Gothic 2, Morrowind, Fable 2, and the such, games with storylines that are drasticaly different and which ARE NOT totally cliche.
For me, the trouble of getting into a JRPG is about 80% getting over the character designs (I totally feel badass playing an androgynous tween or whatever) and 20% getting over the archaic and pace-breaking game design choices. Oh, and the nonsensical plots/cinematics and pages of unspoken dialog (Ahem... Lost Odyssey.)
100% agreed with you. in fact, it should have been called vagrant story 2 as the story is situated in the Invalice world or whatever name( vagrant story 1 got a terrible score like 6/10 i remembered in a magazine).it was pure MARKETING to label the game as final fantasy. the real final fantasy 12 is called Rogue Galaxy which got a score of 8+/10 on many reviews
jRPGs are baby RPGs made for people that can't handle true party management, stats, character creation and free form exploration, there's no jRPG that compares to Ultima VII, no jRPG that compares to M&MVI, and certainly no jRPG that compares to Wizardry 8 or ToEE.
You should check out Lost Odyssey dude, it's the best current gen JRPG, and you can pick it up pretty cheap these days.
I'd say you probably hate JRPG's but can appreciate a good story. There's nothing wrong with that. I can totally understand why alot of people don't like the battle systems in them, but personally I enjoy the tactical side of it.
I've been thinking for a long time. Why do I like JRPGs more than WRPGs. Can somebody tell me the main differences between the typical WRPG and the typical JRPGs? Maybe it could be that I dont play WRPGs that much
I think it may be that JRPGs are more typically a straight storyline, rather then the freedom given in WRPGs. This gives you a more control look at character development and attitude then free control.
I think that most JRPGs have something special about them, and we just become curious. Not every JRPG is perfect, but there is something unique about each, so we strive to find out what's so unique about the JRPG.
If you compare the gameplay of Pokemon with other JRPGs, you'll understand that the Pokemon series has more depth. The combat system is genius, and the availibility of evolution/trading/battling your friends is very impressive. There are tons to do after beating the game.
But that doesn't mean Fallout 3 is bad, it means Fallout 2 fans thought it would be something else, which it's not. They thought it'd be "Another Fallout game" where it was really "Trashland RPG" and didn't have much resemblance to Fallout. That's not a BAD thing, but it disappoints people anyway.
Just like I thought FF12 would be "Another FFX" when it was some crappy JRPG I wouldn't have played if it didn't have FF in the title.
And that's one of the most common reasons people think FF7 is so "amazing," it's nostalgic for them. Growing up on games like Ultima, Betrayal at Krondor, etc., I kind of twisted my head and said "Huh?" when FF7 came out. It just had great timing on release, at a time when a new generation was getting into games on the Playstation.

Here are a few JRPGs you can try out:
FFVI, FFVII Crisis Core, FFVIII, FF Tactics, FFXIII, Chrono Cross, Lufia II, Alundra, Dragon Quest V, Rogue Galaxy, Persona 3 & 4, Yakuza 1-3, Lost Odyssey, Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of Vesperia
Try out a few of these, and if you don't like any of them, then there's not much else I can do to change your opinion about JRPGs.

My reccomendations:
Tales of the Abyss
Tales of Vesperia
Persona 4
Can't be bothered justifying them right now, but I'll just say I love them to death, and they all have fast-paced, fun combat.
