i use to have a 1995 honda xr600 dirtbike,, instead of spending like $500. on an after market pipe,i just removed the baffle,it ran great n sounded great too.
people that dont know anything about making a Engine run better or faster make it loud. people like you get riding areas closed. Spend a little money and get allot more power from a Pro Circuit set up like my T-4 I have on mine. it sound so much better and you wont start any fires from the shit coming out. dont forget the airbox mod to get more power. i work at dust devils motorsports in AZ let me know if we can help.
I did the same thing to my XR650R the same day i got it home from the show room. Just have to be cearfull ride'n them in the long grass in summer after that mod (the back fires could light the bush up with out the spark arrestor) but
it does make them sound heaps better than they do stock, They sound like a postie bike with the stock exhaust lol, But i got a full staintune system as soon as i had the cash, Totaly worth the money! they sound f#cking awesome!
I got a 04 650l and i took out the silencer. I think it just made it sound kinda tinny and cheap. A guy I work with bought a 06 650 l with a xr's only exhaust system and i bought a big gun muffler a week later. the difference in the sound is like night and day.
I had to REALLY pry with a flathead around the whole surface AFTER I dremel'd out the welds. You can slip it back in and pound it virtually flush. You should notice struggling at higher revs until opening the airbox, so drill a few small holes into the top. For less than most pipes you can get a JE 10.5 piston and a Hotcam and experience considerably more power, less vibrations, and my oil temp dipstick shows the engine actually runs about 20deg cooler at all times... go figure?!
Well, the welds were a little bit of a hassle, but I managed to cut 'em. I believe this is a very sensible mod for those who can't or don't want to purchase an aftermarket pipe. I'm glad to have the option of running super quiet or just a little noisier, as the "open" exhaust allows.
