I HAVE a pet, and I love my cat.

But I love robotics too...and the more realistic they are, the more they amaze me.

Pleo is a cool robotic pet that anyone can have, even those with allergies.

I have an animal and really love my cat. But I also wanted to own one of the first artificial life forms. And to my surprise, there isn't that much of a difference. I'm pretty sure that this is the pet of the future; as unpredictable and cute as a real one, but without the many downsides (food costs, disposal of metabolic waste products, veterinary bills, possible neuroses like peeing on the carpet etc.)

A little background knowledge in neurobiology and neurochemistry allow me to see through my cat's behavior the same way I see the reasons for Pleo's behavior, and both works pretty similar. Ugobe did a good job at simluating a life form with urges and needs. But even more important, my reaction to both of them is the same, i.e. they both give me an oxytocin kick just like caring for human offspring would (which is the reason why we keep pets at all).
