@lightandfaith1 you're such a piece of shit...its truly amazing...thrown in jail for rejecting Christ? Wow.... you sure get some crazies here huh?.... I feel sorry in a way for those minds that cannot see what is in front of their eyes, but hey, they dont feel sorry in their persecution so you can all fuck off, weak minds seek weak ideas...... you are weak.....
nice video post. Time for atheists to speak up, and get the word out about religions/superstitions. Silence is death. Religions are the lie, the cancer, the virus of the mind. If you tell a lie long enought and big enought people will believe you and that is what religion is.
@hgeny I think it should be noted that atheists aren't a minority in the sense of a repressed group. Most atheists are successful and who would want to hang out with people predisposed to Christianity in the first place? The point is not to gain any freedoms but for atheists to wake people up from their delusions. Atheists are the free ones. Christians are the ones who are in the literate "minority" and promote mental illness. (A video of Kenneth Copeland laughing like a lunatic comes to mind.)
The more and more I think about evolution (I do know about evolution for about ~50 years and accepted it right away when I heared about it). the more I develop this feeling that it is actually the most simple, intuitive and foremost most beautiful explanation for the arrising and the shape of all extant and extinct species we know of. Punctuated Equilibrium rules.
(on a personal note: I am sorry if my grammar/spelling is appaling to you, english is not amongst my first three languages)
@HerMeggido lol. I had a different reaction when I learned about evolution. My first reaction is to make sure I treat my girlfriend well so I stand a chance of passing on my genes. Embarrassing I know, but evolution is pretty intense a subject and if you're not in the 'game' you're in deep shit. Maybe the original powers that be created religion so that illiterate men could compete and keep all the pussy for themselves? ;-) Now it's just evolved but I think the 'game' is the same.
@lightandfaith1 Wait woa woa woa, how is rejecting Christ sickening? And why would you ever want a "God-Fearing state to throw "devil loving scum like me in jail"?!? And lastly, my mother is proud, but is devoutly religious, a catholic. But first of all, i am not a "devil loving scum." In fact, i dont even believe in the devil. And personally, i think that even if Yaweh did exist, he would be a terrible, mean, sick, destructive, angry, human, imperfect being. Thank God (hah) he doesnt exist.
The history of science has been a record of finding the true explanations for things once believed to be supernatural. There is no reason to believe that it will not continue the process.
Do you think that these groups of conservative think tanks(Discovery Institute, etc) that are against evolution actually believe that a god exists? I have a theory that these religious groups have done the math and have legitimate claims that people won't act moral or behave properly unless they are guided by some sort of moral (or a feel-good supernatural) authority - and science threatens that since it won't offer them that emotional security. Any thoughts?
@Water4Jeremiah Freud figured that we had to either 1) empower everyone with a humanistic educations and create a just world for them to inhabit, or 2) keep on oppressing the downtrodden masses with religion, or 3) prepare for revolution once the masses figure out what's being done to them. Europe seems to have chosen #1, whereas America has opted for #2. I'm sure that plays a role in the thought of the Discotute.
@HConstantine #1 is best. #2 occurs everywhere and #3 I think losing my religion made me a proactive thinker not rebellious. As for them believing in a god I'm more convinced they don't. Why would you hire someone to work at (Discovery Institute) if they actually believed in a god? Because to make up stuff to fight evolution you'd need to be able to understand that evolution is real to start with so you can manipulate it. Isn't that ironic though? The Discovery Institute is full of atheists. XD
@HConstantine America is a place where social change is resisted but when it happens it's usually in a great wave. Abolition and civil rights come to mind. From an outside perspective I see a social debate building in America.
@craigdb84 So if science is a lie, how do you think technology works? Do you think, like the Jewish tribesmen from Yemen flown to Israel after WWII, that the plane is kept in the air by the magical power of gods's name? Your computer operates on the same understanding of quantum mechanics as the big bang. If one is a lie, the other one shouldn't work, should it? Or are little angels carrying your posts to my computer to read?
@HConstantine You're equating electronic, man-made circuits with an imaginative, man-made idea of evolution? Apples and oranges my friend. Evolution is NOWHERE near as concrete as electronics and the established physics behind circuits. Equating the two tells me you don't know jack about the concepts behind evolution, nor the imaginative conclusions that evolution is based off, given the observable facts. Evolution is not FULLY scientific, but I have no doubt that you came from primordial apes.
@D0KTOR7 "Evolution is NOWHERE near as concrete as electronics and the established physics behind circuits."
I don't think so. What makes evolution concrete is that it can be observed, measured and tested, just like electronics. Evolution makes testable predictions just like other areas of science. E.g. we have so many excellent sequences of fossils illustrating gradual changes over time because the theory of evolution tells us where to dig to find particular fossils.
@biain93 Did you honestly just tell someone else to stop being narrow-minded while generalizing an entire nation's people as 'bible bashes?' Get some sense, honestly. I'm from Minnesota and I currently live in New York. Nobody I personally know in my area does not understand and believe in Evolution, to my knowledge.
@TheLegendaryMoja Let me assure you that what you inferred was not the point I why trying to present. My point was every other developed country accepts evolution almost completely with tiny minorities not. In the US however, they're still minorities but have significant influence and so 'bible bashes' go on fox news and other media trying to try and get creationism into schools; I didn't mean all Americans are bible bashes. I apologise if my comment offended you and so I have removed it.
This woman is obviously brilliant. Anyone who can screw up simple words and phrases, and at some point come up with the word 'omnibenevolent' like it was something she learned in grade school has got a lot on her mind, lol. WTF, by the way, made me bust out laughing at 3am... I must assume these are all biologists or historians... They couldn't have gotten anyone in the computer sciences to fix their laptop? LMAO This was a great lecture, I will have to look this woman up.
Evolution makes sense, religion doesn't. If some ppl prefer things that don't make sense, then they're welcome to do that as long as they're not causing problems for other ppl.
Growing up religious, it was very hard for me to accept evolution. Once I did do a full investigation and could no longer deny the truth of it, it felt weird to know I was a primate. I remember distinctly feeling my skull and looking at extinct hominid skulls. What an adventure it has been! Too bad die hard religious people blind themselves so deeply to such an obvious truth. Such a shame.
I'm curious as a believer in evolution have you looked at some of the archaeological anomalies found in the fossil record such as in Michael Cremo's book forbidden archaeology? And if you have what do you think about the records?
@Marathonmarch I tend to dismiss most things that are dismissed by main stream science. There is simply too much pseudoscience. I have confidence that the vast majority of scientists feel the way I do, that the truth is far more important than maintaining a status quo. Thus since I am a layman, I trust more in what experts have to say on the matter than a group like the Bhaktivedanta Institute. I am positive were they to demonstrate truth behind their claims, it would be accepted in science.
@Judicial78 Must be very frustrating for you not to be able to read with comprehension. However if you want to try to respond to what I wrote, instead of spewing out your masturbation fantasy, I'll read it.
@Marathonmarch I am not a scientist so therefore I see no point in doing that sort of research. I can fill my head with all sorts of psuedo-science that does not mean it will be productive for me to do. I'll let the experts handle it and admit to myself I don't know everything.
but, but, but... if humans evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys? LOL. I always love that one. litmus test for any debate I'm about to get in to, 'what do you think the word theory means?'
@AtheismTV Her full proper name is "Eugenie", it's true. However, the nickname "Genie" is used quite often, including by Miller and even by Scott herself. I do believe (although I'm not certain on this) that this channel is run by the NSCE itself, so given that I'm fairly sure that if they put "Genie" in the title, they are) and she by extension is) fine with the nickname.
See also the video, "Evolution vs Creationism 101: Genie Scott" in the sidebar.
there is zero tolerance in university for not applying yourself to understand evolution the way that it is being taught or attempting to interject "intelligent design". you either get with the program or you fail the class.
If you're talking about spelling, I'm not sure the opening slide "Orange County Freethought Associatin" is spelled correctly. Then the mic's not switched on. This had better be good, because not even a minute in, these guys look like a bunch of bumbling idiots.
@volound Thanks for your support.I'm sure Tarzan is real, because I have a BOOK!Not one book, quite a few.And all of them are saying he's real,so he must be.Now everyone should shut up and respect my beliefs. Thanks again,KALA bless you:)
@phillozoph50 There are also several video recordingsof him each over an hour long, following his whole life! I can actually SEE Tarzan! Who can refuse he was the king of the jungle? That's ridiculous!
Evolution is actually quite simple! Do offspring look like a perfect blend of their parents or is there some variation? Obviously there is some variation. Now watch that variation grow though subsequent generations as influenced by said variations impact on their ability to survive to reproduction. Voilà, Evolution.
She appears to have erred with the "creative spelling" comment, as devastate is spelled correctly. She probably meant to ask why the church is encouraging people to "devastate the world for god". The sign is odd in that respect.
That's why evolution is now properly described as the Unified Theory of Evolution. Because it encompasses most fields of the natural and biological sciences.
Unfortunately, C Darwin emphasized slow change. R Dawkins has hammered home this same mantra in terms of complete randomness. Consequently evolutionary theory today is flat lining. There is no room for new vibrant concepts that reflect the magnitude of change that is the potenial of genetic mechanisms. Humans can be seen as a separate evolutionary path, which carried further becomes a creation. The task is to identify the evolutionary pathway that allowed humans to become separate from animals.
@saxmanchiro - you might have to tell them they don't have to believe it, but must be able to recall it on a test (just as the may not believe a fiction book they read but they musy be able to answer questions on it). It's a sad compromise. But it may be better do have gradations of success and failures rather than have only complete success and failure.
@alcedes78 No, I never say "You don't have to believe it". That allows them to discount the truth and go along their merry way. When they get to college, they will be getting just more indepth info on the same. If they take that attitude into the lecture hall, they will have a hard time, unless they attend a 'school' that spins imaginary friends into the lectures because their parents don't want them to learn the truth. "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- Aldous Huxley
WTF This is a great speech by a very smart and brave woman. She's fighting for truth in the face of our egos. I learned a few things to use the next time I debate someone.
I just finished my term teaching Biology to Southern Baptist students. Even after 16 weeks of indepth curriculum required by our State, including Evolution, Endosymbiosis, Cell bio, org chem, and several processes common to all life forms, I had several students who kept arguing with me that we are not animals. Seems the brainwashing they received from their upbringing did a wonderful job of not allowing them to understand my lectures. My come back , "What Kingdom do we belong to then?"
@InvertedHorizon Close, but no cigar. After teaching them Classification(Taxonomy) and the specific things that the Animal Kingdom members have in common, they cannot accept we are animals. One student actually said we belonged to the Human Kingdom. It's sad to witness. I consider the brainwashing they have received a form of child abuse. Many of these same students do not pass their End of Grade exam issued by the State.
@saxmanchiro My friend (in high school) once got into an argument with a classmate who said 'We aren't animals' she snapped back 'Well you're the funniest looking vegetable I've ever seen!'. Some people seem unable to think beyond the most simple concepts. Animal to them means, base, unintelligent, primitive, driven by instincts. At least, in my experience, that is the crux of the issue.
evolution isnt difficult . . . its actually really common sense when u think about it. reproducing agents + mutation = change over time . . . change over time + natural selection = evolution . . . so obvious u have to be deluded to deny it at this point
@keggerous Yes evolution is a simple idea, but apparently very counter intuitive to people. Because so few actually get it. And it's even worse. Because it is so simple, people are 100% they already understand it. So they rarely re-examine they're thoughts on evolution, and easily disregard other people who have a different understanding (Correct understanding). It's quite strange.
@keggerous Its common sense when you understand these concepts you named - "reproducing agents", "mutations", "natural selection". When you say "mutation" to most people they think about Chernobyl kids, X-men and ninja turtles, add to that a life long emotional attachment to their dogmas and it's not a stretch to see why its very hard for them to accept it. That's why its up to us who understand those things to be patient and understanding when trying to explain it to them. evolution FTW :P
That's why you ought to admire Creationists and other kinds of fundamentalists (also "sceptics"/denielists, adepts of cospiracy theories etc). It takes GREAT effort pretending not to see simple things, or if they really don't, then they are an interesting freaks of nature, sort of brain damaged version of two-headed animal.
@SwineNahNah well technically religion is brain damage. Have you not heard that several years ago scientists discoverd a section of the brain that is responsible for religion. Some people (creationists) have larger ones, others, (rational thinkers) have very small ones, so technically it could count as brain damage
@deathman1021 you underestimate neuroplastics... at least that is what i think it is called in english :) the same way concert-pianists have larger "musical" brain parts. the constant "use" of the religious parts makes them grow bigger.
@robertgaudlitz hmm i had no idea, even so, some people are simply born with a knack for certain traits, for example music, you can learn but some people are just good from the start.
@deathman1021 that is absolutely true, but you can still literally TRAIN your brain :) on the downside, if all you encounter is religious indoctrination, like the poor boys (and that is ONLY boys, because we can hardly allow GIRLS to learn how to read) that are cramped into madras in the madrasahs of the islamic world are put through, you will most likely have the worst part of your supposedly beautiful mind enlarged. who needs basic literal skills, math, science and foreign languages, eh :D
@robertgaudlitz I kinda find it sad what happend to the islamic world, they went from bastion of science during the christian dark ages to having their own, and they still live in it, i just hope we will eventually come to a point where people finally realize the harm religion does and put a stop to it.
But either way, either through training or genetics certain parts of the brain (specifically that religious part) need to learn that we no longer need it and go away
@deathman1021 Unfortunately natural selection doesn't select against that section of the brain. In fact, I think those people have more kids, so it selects for it.
@sjh7132 Perhaps a surgical procedre or a law against teaching that shit to kids should be made, but as it stands that is a protected form of child abuse

nice video post. Time for atheists to speak up, and get the word out about religions/superstitions. Silence is death. Religions are the lie, the cancer, the virus of the mind. If you tell a lie long enought and big enought people will believe you and that is what religion is.
hgeny 9 months ago 3

Water4Jeremiah 9 months ago
@Water4Jeremiah Freud figured that we had to either 1) empower everyone with a humanistic educations and create a just world for them to inhabit, or 2) keep on oppressing the downtrodden masses with religion, or 3) prepare for revolution once the masses figure out what's being done to them. Europe seems to have chosen #1, whereas America has opted for #2. I'm sure that plays a role in the thought of the Discotute.
HConstantine 9 months ago
@HConstantine #1 is best. #2 occurs everywhere and #3 I think losing my religion made me a proactive thinker not rebellious. As for them believing in a god I'm more convinced they don't. Why would you hire someone to work at (Discovery Institute) if they actually believed in a god? Because to make up stuff to fight evolution you'd need to be able to understand that evolution is real to start with so you can manipulate it. Isn't that ironic though? The Discovery Institute is full of atheists. XD

HConstantine 9 months ago
@HConstantine You're equating electronic, man-made circuits with an imaginative, man-made idea of evolution? Apples and oranges my friend. Evolution is NOWHERE near as concrete as electronics and the established physics behind circuits. Equating the two tells me you don't know jack about the concepts behind evolution, nor the imaginative conclusions that evolution is based off, given the observable facts. Evolution is not FULLY scientific, but I have no doubt that you came from primordial apes.
D0KTOR7 9 months ago
@D0KTOR7 "Evolution is NOWHERE near as concrete as electronics and the established physics behind circuits."
I don't think so. What makes evolution concrete is that it can be observed, measured and tested, just like electronics. Evolution makes testable predictions just like other areas of science. E.g. we have so many excellent sequences of fossils illustrating gradual changes over time because the theory of evolution tells us where to dig to find particular fossils.

@TheLegendaryMoja Let me assure you that what you inferred was not the point I why trying to present. Such a shame.

Marathonmarch 9 months ago
@Marathonmarch I tend to dismiss most things that are dismissed by main stream science. There is simply too much pseudoscience. I have confidence that the vast majority of scientists feel the way I do, that the truth is far more important than maintaining a status quo. Thus since I am a layman, I trust more in what experts have to say on the matter than a group like the Bhaktivedanta Institute. I am positive were they to demonstrate truth behind their claims, it would be accepted in science.

Evolution is difficult because the capacity to understand reason and science has not yet completely evolved among all "humans".
DoMadrid 9 months ago
Evolution is actually quite simple! Do offspring look like a perfect blend of their parents or is there some variation? Obviously there is some variation. Now watch that variation grow though subsequent generations as influenced by said variations impact on their ability to survive to reproduction. Voilà, Evolution.

Science is TRUE because it WORKS! -- not because of superstitious beliefs.
Even though Darwin had no knowledge of genes or DNA , Evolution has been absolutely verified by genetics.
There is no documented evidence, whatsoever, in over 150 years that contradicts Evolution.
The Theory of Evolution is as fundamental as Gravity, Atomic Theory, Germ Theory, Electromagnetic Theory, & Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

@goog2k Good post. Much to the point.
That's why evolution is now properly described as the Unified Theory of Evolution. Because it encompasses most fields of the natural and biological sciences.
FaganRoberts 9 months ago
@FaganRoberts Excellent point.
I certainly believe evolution encompasses most of the biological sciences and probably even geology.
Evolution helped prove Wegener's theories of continental drift and "Plate tectonics."
Evolution has been independently verified by paleontology, anatomy, embryology, microbiology & genetics.

But it may be better do have gradations of success and failures rather than have only complete success and failure.
alcedes78 9 months ago
@alcedes78 No, I never say "You don't have to believe it". That allows them to discount the truth and go along their merry way. When they get to college, they will be getting just more indepth info on the same. If they take that attitude into the lecture hall, they will have a hard time, unless they attend a 'school' that spins imaginary friends into the lectures because their parents don't want them to learn the truth.

Actually, your "common sense" has been educated. It has taken in a lot of data, and you've made a lot of thinking about it.
Not everyone has. Most people i know don't understand Evolution (even those who accept it).

@keggerous I don't believe its common sense.
I think its sense.
But to call it common? Not really.
Microtardz 9 months ago
@keggerous Yes evolution is a simple idea, but apparently very counter intuitive to people. Because so few actually get it. And it's even worse. Because it is so simple, people are 100% they already understand it. So they rarely re-examine they're thoughts on evolution, and easily disregard other people who have a different understanding (Correct understanding). It's quite strange.
LunarPoet 9 months ago
@keggerous Its common sense when you understand these concepts you named - "reproducing agents", "mutations", "natural selection". When you say "mutation" to most people they think about Chernobyl kids, X-men and ninja turtles, add to that a life long emotional attachment to their dogmas and it's not a stretch to see why its very hard for them to accept it. That's why its up to us who understand those things to be patient and understanding when trying to explain it to them. evolution FTW :P
eran5005 9 months ago
@keggerous
SwineNahNah 9 months ago
@SwineNahNah well technically religion is brain damage. Have you not heard that several years ago scientists discoverd a section of the brain that is responsible for religion. Some people (creationists) have larger ones, others, (rational thinkers) have very small ones, so technically it could count as brain damage
deathman1021 9 months ago
@deathman1021 you underestimate neuroplastics... at least that is what i think it is called in english :) the same way concert-pianists have larger "musical" brain parts. the constant "use" of the religious parts makes them grow bigger.
robertgaudlitz 9 months ago
@robertgaudlitz hmm i had no idea, even so, some people are simply born with a knack for certain traits, for example music, you can learn but some people are just good from the start.
deathman1021 9 months ago
@deathman1021 that is absolutely true, but you can still literally TRAIN your brain :) on the downside, if all you encounter is religious indoctrination, like the poor boys (and that is ONLY boys, because we can hardly allow GIRLS to learn how to read) that are cramped into madras in the madrasahs of the islamic world are put through, you will most likely have the worst part of your supposedly beautiful mind enlarged. who needs basic literal skills, math, science and foreign languages, eh :D
robertgaudlitz 9 months ago
@robertgaudlitz I kinda find it sad what happend to the islamic world, they went from bastion of science during the christian dark ages to having their own, and they still live in it, i just hope we will eventually come to a point where people finally realize the harm religion does and put a stop to it.
But either way, either through training or genetics certain parts of the brain (specifically that religious part) need to learn that we no longer need it and go away
deathman1021 9 months ago
@deathman1021 Unfortunately natural selection doesn't select against that section of the brain. In fact, I think those people have more kids, so it selects for it.
