lol, i love that throwing flower bags part...reminds of how we used to throw water balloons at some people when we were in school in the 60s...mostly teacher's pets, LOL!
thank u for posting this, didn't know this interview existed!
ritchie is hilarious and was a hard man at one concert with dio and rainbow he knocked a bouncer out and broke his jaw because the bouncer was harrasing a young girl so basically blackmore owned him like hes gonna own ian gillan in a back alley one day ha ha
It's great how terrible the audio levels were done in this interview. Make the background music just as loud or louder than Ritchie so that it's impossible to hear what he's saying or even concentrate.
An inspiration. No matter what people say he is one of those unique artists and he will never be,and never could be replaced with anyone. His style and influence will forever be carved into rock'n'roll music, and to hell with all you faggots out there, there are some people you cannot stain with your filth. Talent, devotion, uniqueness!
THat's the reason I could never listen or watch DP again since he left. Steve Morse is a great guitar player, but Ritchie is an icon, one of a kind. In fact, the term "guitar hero"shold carry a picure of him in the dictionary.
Hahaha, Blackmore is a stark raving mad storyteller! He tells his story like its the normal way of living life. Especially the petrol poored over his amp that blew up to hard... Knocked off Ian Paice's glasses, haha!
@Dementor. I must say that I agree pretty much with everything you said about DP and Ritchie. Just want to add that US seems to love and remember only those who have "image", not really music. Page always does a very sloppy job when plays live. You can't say that about Ritchie. And yet somehow Page gets all the titles in joke places like Wiki.
so obviously many "myths" regarding music/musicians made today are not 100% credible. and hence not really important for me.
for me as a fan of these bands for long years, it's important to preserve the original "myth" & facts, going way back & being followed for many many years. regardless of what has today been made of rock/heavy metal history by MTV.
Toni Iommi has the title in my eyes. respect to him! but again, so does Ritchie Blackmore for sure. cheers!
as for The Great Purple, how nice we have same faves in Perfect Strangers. first album I had ever bought was this one. and then mine also DP in Rock & MHead could be too. Perfect Strangers have perfect '80s sound. but so do DP in Rock & Machine Head. that tells a lot. Stormbringer is too bluesy fo me, with the exception of the great title track, which is for me basically already Heavy Metal of the '80s. Coverdale's vocals are awesome, yes! same could say with Burn. Morse is great player yes!
so, Sabbath of the '70s are not really HM band for me personally. but hard rock as well. I don't really see what would make them more HM than Deep Purple??? maybe only lyrics perhaps. as for the riffs, it's always been pretty clear Tony was second to Ritchie. and also that he basically took a lot from him. so, only lyrics perhaps. so, hence Ritchie was my 1st choice for "Godfather of Heavy Metal". if you want to make a Godfather due to the lyrics, guess we will have to say Ozzy then, ha haha!
@DomentorTheOnlyTrue Have you heard the song under the sun? or electric funeral? or symptom of the universe? or a national acrobat? These songs are clearly metal and much heavier than anything Deep Purple ever did. Don't get me wrong, Ritchie is great but Black Sabbath were definitely more metal than purple and Iommi is a very good riff maker.
@CampSt4ff this isn't heavy metal it hard so black sabbath is not the right comparison. Ritchie is my favorite rock guitarist and Iommi is my favorite metal guitarist. as far as u say iommi has good riff i agree but don't forget the worlds most popular rock riff smoke on the water. theyre both great and different genres thus comparing them is wrong.
@robonez Wow! actually I prefer Purple to (classic) Sabbath as well. with the exception of my fave Dio-Era Sabbath. also Tony Martin-era is better for me than old Sabbath with Ozzy, of course & even Glen Hughes' Seventh Star is better than old Sabbath for me. actually Seventh Star was my 1st Sabbath album I'd bought. I prefer '80s Sabbath due to the '80s sound with which I'm more at home with, as I grew up in the '80s with metal. '70s sound is rougher. only exception are probably Purple.
but today Ritchie is not even being recognized as a big influence on Heavy Metal riffs, but "The Only Ones" are Tony & Jimmy Page as I see on Wikipedia. what a myth. typical american. Led Zeppelin was always big in America. Deep Purple are nowhere to be seen. or look all those "Ever Best" lists of bands, guitarists, etc, that have been so popular the last years. mostly you see bands are on top that are faves in america & favourized on MTV. go on Wikipedia & search some of those. it's ludicrous.
@robonez Respects my friend! That is very cool, of course. he may very well have this title today. he deserves it, no doubt. but today is very much different as 20 years back. today you won't see Deep Purple on MTV, for example. but only Black Sabbath (& Metallica & Ozzy). all the time. so, that definately has an impact on who gets acknowledged & who gets forgotten. 20 years back you could've probably seen in some literature this title being honored to Ritchie Blackmore. no doubt.
Man that bit he said about som eclassical players being "snobs" is 100 percent right! Im 14 and Im playing in a band with some friends in Berlin. BUT ther all "mainstream" fans you know, Korn, EMO and stuff. And we play rock n roll. BUT the drummer who is a classical player says my stage presence sucks because I "move to much". Thats my problem with classical music: TO MANY WALLS
@robonez Tony took a lot from Ritchie & will always be second to him. no greater riff in history of rock/heavy metal, as Smoke on the Water. so, he's greater Godfather than Iommi. Ritchie Godfather No.1, Tony Iommi Godfather No.2.
@Whackooyzero Oh, yeah. He's been wearing a full wig for at least a decade now. Great player but the guy's got a ego the size of a small continent. Baldness and aging gracefully don't fit into Blackmore's "reality" :-)
@RobinPillage I agree both are real genius but also I think Ritchie is way better live. Page's sound live is, for some reason, inferior to his own sound in studio.
@i1100a - yeah that's because Page is a better composer and producer than live player. He's still brilliant live, but there are better. The great thing about Page though, is that he's so humble and quiet. The dude keeps his ego firmly in check. If you want insane live players, look no further than Jeff Beck. As Jimmy Page said, the greatest living guitarist.
Just Remember! Whatever he is doing today, he is the forerunner to heavyguitarists! It´just that simple! He wanted out of it and he´s happy! That´s to be accepted!
before machine head i was always hearing that ritchie was a dick. Then i watched his last concert with purple and i was convinced. He is god and i love him but its hard to accept that hes not a very nice guy
I think DP management are the bad guys. Let's just agree to disagree as I still think Blackmore is a nice guy although I will admit he is not a people pleaser lol.
Well,I believe that Gillan is also an egoist and full of himself but not as much as RB.Also BIG EGO(like RB'S)=/= good character. We're alll egoists but some are more than others, and makes them bad characters
Im pretty sure Blackmore would have become well known even without Deep Purple he is not only a genius on the guitar but he also composed some of the greatest rock anthems of all time if it hadnt been Deep Purple it would have been some other major band he would have formed. I was at that show. It was the first concert I wever went to. I believe Argent was the opening act. It was the first of many times seeing Blackmore. I think I still have the ticket stub.
Say what you will, the guy's nobody's fool. He knows exactly what he wants, and dosen't settle for less. A most serious musician, he's had little patience for the press. He's all business, thats why he's Blackey.
i love ritchies playing hes legendary i heard in real life hes an asshole but you cant deny his playing im not a big fan of blackmores night but its still interesting
mickeylove, black more was one of the first rock guitarists to alternate pick cleanly, he was also the first to fuse classical music with wrong, which influneced an entire generation of guitarists.
Mickeylove01 you are wrong, he is a great guitarist compared to anyone. He has the abilty to move people emotionally with his playing and that is the greatest gift a musician can possess...He is one of the greats of all time and will be remembered as such!
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, right, or wrong. Stop abusing each other guys, and try making constructive comments on why you disagree. This planet is fucked up enough without you lot making verbal war on each other.
Cor-blimey... That's the most I've ever heard Ritchie say in one interview... You know, he's a clever guy - not a bad guitar player either... Hey, before you guys get any older -do the 'Farewell', please... Ian, Jon, Rodger, Ian, Ritchie - put aside your differences.
lol i thought he said they threw bags of FLOWERS and ran away lol that sounded so gay but i realised its flour bags ... blowing up the amp n stuff was pretty badass, cudve blown in their face but who cares, thats rocknroll baby
He's a fucking magnificent guitarist, and an articulate and intelligent man. Actually far different from what you'd think of him when, say, playing at the 74 California Jam. His guitar work is always enthralling. Great artist.
What a bizarre thing to say. he was never a great guitarist, if you know anything about guitarists you'd know that. But then again we all live within the limits we create for ourselves. Prick.
hey there mr.philosophical bonehead .. never a great guitarist? That man is a fuking influence on half of the greatest guitarists out there, his riffing, soloing all has had an impact on so many guitarists and his songs are classics man...iknw it must be hard to hear with ur head up ur ass but listen carefully .. U R INSIGNIFICANT, BLACKMORE IS GOD..lol u sad twit
Loser? You mean discussion terminated due to the inability of the other party [you], being unable to comprehend the more finer points of guitar playing. Some people go through life basing their philosophy on assumptions. Blackmore was in the right place at the right time playing the right kind of crap. I have no time for pricks like you sonny.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Of course I recognise his virtues, his song writing ability has provided many rock classics during the last 30 years, but he is not a great guitarist compared to others. The reason he oozes some mystique is because he always remained out of the spotlight and this created intrigue, as with Zep.
I realize that there are more technically proficient guitar players out there like Allan Holdsworth, who is a genius player, but I still believe that Ritchie is a very good player. He developed a very unique, melodic style of playing and is just enjoyable to hear. Do you dislike his newer, acoustic stuff as well? I think it also just comes down to what is pleasing to a person to hear...it's subjective.
Of course Blackmore was a very good player. I don't doubt that but, I think Purple were a band who got their unique sound by playing together as a band and not individually. Although I rate Paice as one of the best drummers ever! I think Blackmore sounds better playing his acoustic stuff.
His acoustic music very nice. Also, I don't know him personally but I have met him a few times and he ironically seemed like a nice guy..except for the time he got a little pissed that a friend and I wandered into this small venue he was going to play hours before a show, walked right past his crew and sat in the front row. When he arrived he was not too thrilled that no one knew that we were sitting there...

Even though I consider Tony Iommi to be the Godfather Of Heavy Metal, I'm not that big a Black Sabbath fan.
My favorite Sabbath-record is 'Cross Purposes' with Tony Martin on vocals.
I'm much more a fan of what Deep Purple has done over the years.
My favorite records are 'Perfect Strangers' and 'Abandon', but my favorite song is 'Stormbringer'. Coverdale's vocals rule!
I prefer Morse to Blackmore though, and the 'Perihelion' dvd is regularily in my player!

Say what you will, the guy's nobody's fool. He knows exactly what he wants, and dosen't settle for less. A most serious musician, he's had little patience for the press. He's all business, thats why he's Blackey.

i love his studio playing, but his live stuff is always sloppy,he is no where near a Gary Moore or Randy Rhoads,

mickeylove, black more was one of the first rock guitarists to alternate pick cleanly, he was also the first to fuse classical music with wrong, which influneced an entire generation of guitarists.
blahman178 4 years ago 3
Mickeylove01 you are wrong, he is a great guitarist compared to anyone. He has the abilty to move people emotionally with his playing and that is the greatest gift a musician can possess...He is one of the greats of all time and will be remembered as such!

blackmore is the best there is and the best will ever be.

Ian, Jon, Rodger, Ian, Ritchie - put aside your differences.

absolutely agreed!!!
Go Ritchie you're the best!

lol i thought he said they threw bags of FLOWERS and ran away lol that sounded so gay but i realised its flour bags ... blowing up the amp n stuff was pretty badass, cudve blown in their face but who cares, thats rocknroll baby
TheGunnedDownRose 4 years ago
He's a fucking magnificent guitarist, and an articulate and intelligent man. Actually far different from what you'd think of him when, say, playing at the 74 California Jam. His guitar work is always enthralling. Great artist.

Blackmore was always a middle-classed twit and a stiff. I heard from a reliable source that he had the clap for like 7 years and it wouldn't go away.
MickeyLove01 4 years ago
Maybe so, but you will NEVER play as well as him ....numbnuts.

What a bizarre thing to say. he was never a great guitarist, if you know anything about guitarists you'd know that. But then again we all live within the limits we create for ourselves. Prick.
MickeyLove01 4 years ago
hey there mr.philosophical bonehead .. never a great guitarist? That man is a fuking influence on half of the greatest guitarists out there, his riffing, soloing all has had an impact on so many guitarists and his songs are classics man...iknw it must be hard to hear with ur head up ur ass but listen carefully .. U R INSIGNIFICANT, BLACKMORE IS GOD..lol u sad twit

I'd give you the reasons why but I can't be arsed with a silly little cunt like you. Stick to what you know best, licking your dogs balls.

WHIPPED
TheGunnedDownRose 4 years ago
Loser? You mean discussion terminated due to the inability of the other party [you], being unable to comprehend the more finer points of guitar playing. Some people go through life basing their philosophy on assumptions. Blackmore was in the right place at the right time playing the right kind of crap. I have no time for pricks like you sonny.

I'd rather be Glen Hughes, he had a better voice.
MickeyLove01 4 years ago
Right you are..but why don't you recognize the virtues of Blackmore?
laranges 4 years ago

Of course I recognise his virtues, his song writing ability has provided many rock classics during the last 30 years, but he is not a great guitarist compared to others. The reason he oozes some mystique is because he always remained out of the spotlight and this created intrigue, as with Zep.
MickeyLove01 4 years ago
I realize that there are more technically proficient guitar players out there like Allan Holdsworth, who is a genius player, but I still believe that Ritchie is a very good player. He developed a very unique, melodic style of playing and is just enjoyable to hear. Do you dislike his newer, acoustic stuff as well? I think it also just comes down to what is pleasing to a person to hear...it's subjective.
laranges 4 years ago
Of course Blackmore was a very good player. I don't doubt that but, I think Purple were a band who got their unique sound by playing together as a band and not individually. Although I rate Paice as one of the best drummers ever! I think Blackmore sounds better playing his acoustic stuff.
MickeyLove01 4 years ago
His acoustic music very nice. Also, I don't know him personally but I have met him a few times and he ironically seemed like a nice guy..except for the time he got a little pissed that a friend and I wandered into this small venue he was going to play hours before a show, walked right past his crew and sat in the front row. When he arrived he was not too thrilled that no one knew that we were sitting there...

glenn hughes had a better voice?
LOL
gillan is god
hughes is kinda gay
but blackmore is the best ever

the song in the beginning is called 'And The Address'......from the album Shades Of Deep Purple. (1st Album)

What song is this in the background in the beginning??
GCD89 4 years ago
God, listen to some British English speakers!
Ritchie's speaking tone is significantly different from the music.
Flour bags, yes - ground wheat. He was a young hooligan, messing about.
Nice post, football.
