How is the mechanism different than the current Rubik's 4x4x4s? I really prefer the size of Rubik's, but they tend to not be very good for me.

The Meffert's 4x4 is similar to the Rubik's Revenge originally released in 1982, but the mechanism has been improved and strengthened. Unfortunately, Meffert's is out of stock right now.
now in stock i just bought the twin set :0 :)
i dont like eastsheen 4x4's but there all we have.
