And don't use vista, xp is better for gaming. The difference between dx10 and 9 are so small that you don't notice them. It's just a trick for selling more RAM and graphics cards.

Actually I think Crysis Warhead and Crysis recommend a 8800GTS with 640 MB VRAM.

I'd only recommend 1 GB 9800gt, 1 GB GTS 250, and of course the 200 series with 896 MB+, at least for Nvidia.

Cod4 doesn't really need that much power, I tried it on an X1950 Pro 512MB card and it ran in 1280x1024 with 4xAA just fine. On my GTS250 I can run it in 2048x1536 without problems (my monitor supports that resolution). Cod5 would be a better game to test against it.

I've seen that you'll buy a Phenom X3 710...I've seen lots of specs and benchmarks, and I would recommend you the Phenom X3 720, that's the one which comes closer to the E8400, Q6600 and Q9550 in gaming benchmarks; I believe it doesn't cost much more than the X3 710.

Actually the E8400 beats every quad-core in gaming except the Q9xxx series. It beats every Phenom x3 also in everything. THE ONLY thing is that it does not beat any 3 or 4 core processor in HD encoding.

check that vertical sync isn't on, either in the games or in the nvidia control panel. it may be locking your fps at 75, since that may be your monitor's refresh rate.

just a suggestion. my system with a gts 250 runs cod4 max'd bewtween 80-250 fps [on one of the SAS missions it stays around 80-120, the rest usually 120 and up]

try it. if it doesn't work then, well, idk..
