Rainbow Quest (1965-66) was a U.S. television series hosted by Pete Seeger, devoted to folk music. The show's title is a variation on the lyrics of the folksong "Oh, Had I A Golden Thread". The program operated on a low budget, and Seeger and his fellow producers eventually had to fund the program from their own pockets, before the money ran out entirely and the program went off the air.
Despite his "condition", Johnny Cash was simply electric to see on stage in the 60s - far more than he was years later when things got better mostly due to his unpredictability. Back then he seemed to prowl the stage like a hungry tiger in a cage ready to attack anything that moved - you didn't dare take your eyes off of him in fear of missing something. He looked bad, sounded ragged, acted strangely, yet he grabbed your attention totally regardless of all those things working against him.
Through her faith in God. Despite the quality of "Walk The Line," that film virtually omitted JCC's strong faith and the impact that she and her deeply religious family had on Johnny. If you've only seen the film, then you are missing a significant element of their relationship.
The name is Worried Man Blues. It was originally sung by the Carter Family. June is so awesome in this, and John is too...considering what he's going through now...I have a question though, he never sings Five Feet High and Rising...is it only messing up on my video or is it like that on everyone's?
Amphetamines, never cocaine. But here he is deeply in his "Ring of Fire"; terribly high actually, but great singing anyway... i guess between 1963 and 1965!
Johnny did have problems with drugs, we all know that. He dint lie about it. Thank God he did finally get off them with June's help. And we had the blessing of istening to him and maybe a little encouragement to know drugs can be beat.
Johnny Cash is a bundle of nerves here; this must've been a low point in his time of drug use. But he got over it, thank goodness. And regardless, for some reason this video just kinda makes me yearn to have seen life through the eyes of any one of these people.
Thanks for posting this. Great stuff. Interesting to see Cash in whatever state he was in at this time, approaching the nadir, closing in on rock bottom. He did some great work, though, during this period. All the Native American stuff, blood sweat and tears. Pete is great. I'm going to look for more of his stuff.
So glad you played along with them! That's exactly what Pete Seeger kept encouraging the TV audience to do, so he'd be proud! That was the whole point of the show to spread the love of creating and playing music to us non-performers.
absolutely fabulous-started listening to these at church camp in 1962, reading Kerouac and Richard Farina, then saw Richard and Mimi here by accident, never knew he (richard) was so adept at dulcimer or Mimi was just as good as her sister, but these originals (Carters/Cash and Pete) just wring out the memories and reinforce the common thread. Thankyou!
wouldn't it be great to have seen these great artists
before and after this clip. To hear their voices, to listen to their comments. With that being said, isn't it a great thing to have this moment preserved.
Well i think pete compared to the other two seems pretty gosh darn it normal, sure he could grow some hair but hey baldness happens! I hope after the show the producer of the show or even petey boy himself threw a mars bar in the direction of june, and a neckbrace in the direction of johnny cuz he must have had whiplash for sure from all the head flingin he did in those 4 minutes 51 seconds!
Well i have watched it and Oh my Goodness! Those boots could take somebody's eye out.. but he kept them shiny fairplay!... AND june... june, june, june dearo me she needed a good feeding! Her face is so drawn and her legs well im surprised that when she walked she didnt burst into flames!
The dot was just a practice...I wish i could change my name to pumba lol. I havnt actually watched the video... yet... but i will take freefromfolsom's word that the boots are attractive. So... freefromfolsom you a johnny cash fan then?

How did June manage to stay so calm and sane while dealing with the struggle of trying to support Johnny through his addiction? What a strong woman.
