@phillybass101 Thanks!!! Still have lots to learn and I've been hesitating to post anything new until I get better. But I appreciate the sentiment and will try to post something new soon!
Alright, after reading, "still figuring... how to play bass," I ask myself, why would you state that? I would remove that sentance. After watching and listening to this piece, I see ability that nobody can just "teach." First off, to play to the drums in this video you'd have to be seasoned in off time beats. Second, you're are putting to good of spacing in your improv. As far as I can see you're not new to bass or music, it take a pro to know a pro; you are pro.
OK... I just read the video description. There has GOT to be a catch to that story! LOL You said you're still trying to figure out how to play bass; that makes it sound like you've only been playing a year or something! LOL And I'm willing to bet you've been playing 4--5 years at least. If not, then you're extremely talented (naturally) with the bass and you should do it the best you can for the rest of your life! lol
I guess I put that I'm still learning to play because that's really how I feel and one can never learn enough. That being said I've been playing for about 14 years, man how time fly's!
Ah! I knew it! LOL I figured you'd been playing some long length like that, because even with extreme talent it's rare if not unheard of for someone to only be playing a year or two and play like that! LOL
hhmmmmm!!!!!! i can't stand who plays high notes on a bass. It is called bass because it should be used as a bass. If you don't like bass, then don't play bass, play a guitar. And what you are playng is called "random notes", not "right playing". Even if you are very good in fingering, you should learn something more "bassy". You whould be very good at all.
hey, i'm sorry for what i said, i didn't look up the other vids before posting the comment. i apology and feel very very sorry for what i said. really sorry.
tall32guy, my comment was directed to 4stringsplayer's initial comment, defending high soloing in a bass guitar. Please take note of the congruent aim of commentaries before replying. However, I will remove the commentary just in case more people don't catch its meaning.
Wow man. I don't have a huge basis for this but you're one of the most enjoyable fretless players I've ever heard. The chords you started in the middle were absolutely brilliant.
Must say, It's good to see people actually trying to learn about decent imprvisatinal techniques and musical theory rather than slap-happy pentatonic soloists :)
I find myself cringing at my comments because unlike the comments below I would not have known that part of this peice was played in B Dorian. I am wrong with my music terminology but this particualar peice sounds like a mixture of augmented and diminished interchanges that form fresh rhythmatic upbeats throughout the melody. As if some dominant notes are accenting their relatives. (What do I know! Ha)Anyhow much respect to all the comments concerning B Dorian, and music theory.
Hey man if you like contact me through an email and I can lead you in the right direction to get as good as him. It's not hard just you have to be diligent in practice if you want to be good
I'm not disrespecting music theory and all Charles, but if you really want to improvise, it will happen for you, especially if you enjoy solo-ing. My father was self-taught with no teaching of music theory, his work is very simular style of reonantdoghouse, but his own of course. Keep playing Charles-
To be honest every time I watch this video or others of mine on Youtube I cringe a little. I think everyone is a little insecure of their own playing. In other words I can't really say I make it sound good because I'm awesome, no it's probably not a good thing to say. Let's just say that B dorian rules and anyone who plays it will sound awesome, unless they are listening to themselves?
Hey Jimm loving the new advancebass web.. keep the good work my man!... hey how about "the perfect blond" from tribal tech for the solo over changes...
wow I don't know about that one, what about st thomas :)
I am working on a form of Rhythm Changes, not sure if I'll post anything yet, I think the next few posts might be transcriptions, or something easy. My brain needs time to recover from working on the new website!
It's all about the model. I think mine is a GWB1, it's the older model with an ebony fretboard, not ebanol. I'm not sure which one costs $4,000 but at that price you might as well get a Fodera, or a car! The One for $600 is a basic model, I'm not sure the real difference. Mine cost just under $2,000 and that was a deal, it's an expensive bass! If you are looking for a good fretless for cheap, I suggest a Squire Vintage Modified Jazz bass which plays and sounds great! Mine cost around $200.
hey . . . this is pathetic, but I learned shred, not jazz . . . could you tab some of the patterns you're using and send them to me? would be much obliged.
I prefer the newer Gary Willis basses tbh though. The fingerboard rest looks great to me and is also v. useful. I also prefer the look of an unlined fretless but I guess it might be a bit harder to play.
The new basses are very cool, I'm not sure I like the ebonol fretboard though. I think ebony is better but maybe it's become to expensive to use. I do like that the new basses are setup exactly as Gary Willis has his, mine needed a bit of tweaking like filing the nut.
hey man, you sound killer. I have that same bass and I'm wondering what strings and amp you use. Also, I've had mine for about 3 years and have some nasty fretboard damage. Have you experienced any problems with this?
The amp I am using is an "iAmp 350", made by Euphonic Audio, it's the best amp I've ever owned, I love it. For strings I usually buy DR, and recently have been using their coated strings. Even though it's bad for the fingerboard I usually use Round Wound strings. I've owned this bass for about a year and so far I've had no problems, do you have an ebony fingerboard?
Lets see what you've got dude, dare you post? Until then zip it! hey and don't be afraid of real talent, I know you will feel threated by this amazing solo but if you practice alot you might be able to clean this guys bass if you ask nice..
ur a darn good player, no question. but: i play bass too, and i play it cuz i like the deep, stomach-moving sound. u dont need a bass for what ur doin... and i wouldnt say you have "mastered" the bass. its nice, but i think u prevent a "career" of many talented bass players who think they need to play something like ur playin and, of course, fail at that.
lol! I think I have to agree with that too... I'm tired of reading so many stupid post fights. Sadly enough, most of them can be found in music videos, with lots of jealous musicians attacking (not just critisizing) the work of others.

Hey thanks Yetlpfote, World-famous hey, well I guess I can work on it, which country do you recommend starting with? As for the strings they are round-wound, and combined with the bartolini pickup set close to the bridge it creates a very crisp tone. I've also tried playing this bass with flat-wounds and it's still very clear. It's just a great bass, I mean if it's good enough for Gary Willis, although since it is good enough for Gary Willis it adds to the price of the bass.
Great playing! I can hear (and see ;) ) that you listen a lot to Gary Willis, huh? You got some great chops there, but you might want to get that B-string quiet.
I like. Very good playing. You should feel good about your playing. You've put in the work and it shows.

Great playing! I can hear (and see ;) ) that you listen a lot to Gary Willis, huh? You got some great chops there, but you might want to get that B-string quiet.

OK, this is going in my favourites. Love your playing, and I love the drum track that goes with it! How much did the GWB cost you btw?
