In the US many if not most youth clubs are run by non-profit, non-government organizations, like the boys and girls club, YMCA/YWCA, Salvation Army, Basketball/baseball/football/soccer clubs, etc. Is the UK devoid of these groups? Have they turned their communities over to the National Government?
Maybe they need to reclaim their communities and fund these things themselves. Wealthy people are always ready to donate to kids.The community will be in control and the kids will have a place.

The excuse given was that gov't budget cuts resulted in the closing of all youth organizations.This struck me as odd because most, if not all, the youth programs where I live are paid for through donations, fund raisers, and enrollment fees (scholarship are available for those in need) .Volunteers coach, run activities, cook food, keep the fields in good repair, etc.

There is no direct political motivation for the majority of the rioters, for them it's just a big smash and grab. What we need to do though is to look at what has made these people that way? It can only be the environment in which they live.
If we want to stop it from happening in the future the last thing we need is an even more oppressive police presence, what we need is a large scale social and economic change or history will continue to repeat itself.
Whether or not these kids are "aware" they are responding to social conditions. It's a bad place to live if you have no money, no job, and absolutely no future.

There are some many things wrong with this clip I don't know where to begin, poor commentary on what really happend a lack of real knowledge of probably cause and a complete lack of evidence shown. In effect this is doing more harm than the BBC supposedly not facing up to the real reason why the riots were caused. There are problems in English society, but these do not come down to a lack of respect for the police or government cuts, because 99.999% of the UK do not support violent action.
It shows the lack of morality that those people have. I never had a youth centre to go to, I just did work! Life is not about entertainment but to help others. A much better place for them to have gone to is church and to educate themselves instead of wasting time and other peoples money!!!

In the US many if not most youth clubs are run by non-profit, non-government organizations, like the boys and girls club, YMCA/YWCA, Salvation Army, Basketball/baseball/football/soccer clubs, etc. Is the UK devoid of these groups? Have they turned their communities over to the National Government?
Maybe they need to reclaim their communities and fund these things themselves. Wealthy people are always ready to donate to kids.The community will be in control and the kids will have a place.

@befr33 Sadly yeah, you're right and I'm calling them all greedy. It's not so much the stealing, it's what they're stealing (luxury items for personal use, many reportedly trying clothes on for size first... obviously they're not starving and planning to sell them on) and that it's mostly the poor working class who are the VICTIMS of the riots. I'd normally be the first to sympathise the lack of opportunities etc and even defend this sort of thing but this is embarrassing... Consumerism gone mad

@marsharent Dear sir or ma'm. It's not about boredom it's about lots of young people being on the streets, on the dole whatever, so the kind of people who generally do random acts of violence (troubled, maybe poor, perhaps criminal, but whatever the reasons) quickly spread to other groups.
Can we make that clear?
To me, boredom, or greed - which are both just human general behavior - is like blaming the summer. Maybe this wouldn't happen without any of those components, but does it matter?

Youth centres or as they're called in the UK, Yoof Centres are not the answer. The same element of English society have been causing football riots, and street violence for almost 30 years. One generation replacing the next, new immigration changing the ethnicity of the element. The one common theme is Employment or the lack thereof and an ever increasing population of those with it, and those without. Fix the cause not the effect

The UK has real social/cultural/economic/racial/political issues that its going to have to address one way or another. That island is too damn small to just ignore its problems like we do here in America. And I fear the UK is becoming dangerously like America. When you treat people like animals they're going to act like animals. No one just went mad over night. Your society fell apart overtime. Now deal with it and do something about it.

The problem is that people are assuming this to be random, when it isn't. Several gangs are organising this. They saw the opportunity and they took it. Politics are definitely in a bad place, but they aren't what's causing this.

Of course, these people don't think politically, but that doesn't mean that the explanation (not an excuse) for their (criminal) behavior is different. The reason this happens is political and social, even if the minds of the rioters are not. As others have pointed out, if you have nothing to lose and you will be punished anyway ...

Our UK system has been deteriorating for the last fifty years.
It's not good enough that Cameron is locking up the youth of today and taking away their benefit money. He needs to look to 3 year olds to make sure this doesn't happen again. Young people deserve to have strong, honest leadership, a good education, discipline, and interesting jobs.

There is no direct political motivation for the majority of the rioters, for them it's just a big smash and grab. What we need to do though is to look at what has made these people that way? It can only be the environment in which they live.
If we want to stop it from happening in the future the last thing we need is an even more oppressive police presence, what we need is a large scale social and economic change or history will continue to repeat itself.

What everyone fails to understand is that this isn't politically motivated. People used the protest against Mark Duggan's shooting as an excuse and hijacked that to go ahead and do looting and robberies.
The man in the interview still thinks this is Brixton in 1981 and obviously has yet to move on. For some reason Americans have jumped on that and assumed it to be true.
Anyone attempting to defend them is flat-out ignorant.

Firstly the rioters are wrong to be doing this because it is further affecting the community although the youths are finally been listened to apparently. 3 people have died recently and we don,t need this. Secondly it is not just young people doing this although may be the majority adults and parents are also involved. There have been cuts but the government needs to review the impacts on young people NO EMA TRIPLED TUITION UNI FEES, HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE. THERE IS INEQUALITY.

There are some many things wrong with this clip I don't know where to begin, poor commentary on what really happend a lack of real knowledge of probably cause and a complete lack of evidence shown. In effect this is doing more harm than the BBC supposedly not facing up to the real reason why the riots were caused. There are problems in English society, but these do not come down to a lack of respect for the police or government cuts, because 99.999% of the UK do not support violent action.
