I wouldn't consider it "jazz drumming". Too much "drum machine like". In my opinion, jazz is way more "loose" and free. No need to show the rest of the band where 1 is, they know where it is.
i think when i saw your video played jazz swing it's very diferrent from the culture and groove..your playing seem play rock..there's no comping in your bass drum..and th feel wasn' swinging..just in my opinion...check out how Gene Crupa,Buddy Rich, Jack De Johnette, and other profesional jazz drummer play and you'll know the diferrent
Having studied 3 groovy worlds (rock-funk, jazz, Latin) I can attest to taste opposed to tech. Jazz uses the kit as a colorful, orchestral supplement, incorporating kicks + fills over time. Small combos sound awesome w/o drums because they fill in the accents. In Latin music it replaces the Congas, Tablas, etc.
Rock and Funk require a steady BB = re-enforcement of 2&4, clear subdivision into 16ths. I have learnt not to think in beats and 4/4 but to grasp an ‘overall’ groove with triplet subdivisions that COMPLEMENT the band.

Don't be fooled, jazz drumming is the most complex and beautiful style of playing the drums out there, I only hope one day that I can veer from the "basher" style that I have picked up through self teaching and learn the crown jewel style of music that our instrument demands.
@goodnamepending it depends on which recording you're listening to, but is there really a way to play Take Five? Last time I checked, jazz was one of the most colorful and expressive genres and not patternbased...
I hear snare hits he doesn't actually do. Really small rolls around 1:00. I wonder where the sound's coming from because the rest of the sounds are syncd with what he does.
ok, I'm not saying jazz is the best type of music or anything but it is undeniable that it is THE hardest type of music to learn on any instrument. It takes years of training but all that training can be useless if you don't know how to feel the music. Metal isn't half as hard as jazz. In metal youcan go 300 bpm but just play the same thing over and over again. In jazz you can go 300 bpm and have to stay musical the whole way through it.
@imakery So true... I personally don't listen to Jazz (just don't like how soft it is). I listen to metal, rock, blues, classical etc... but I agree Jazz is super hard to play. However there are some Jazz influenced Metal bands out that aren't "The same thing over and over again." like Black Sabbath, and Megadeth and have some difficult beats. And I actually prefer jazz drumming over any others, many metal beats are so boring. I wish there was more jazz in metal.
this guy is playing jazz easy. but how ever REAL jazz is not easy. In example: listen to antonino sanchez, jeff ballard, or brian blade and try and tell me what they're playing isn't the hardest stuff you've ever heard in your life.
i don't know much bout jazz so i am watching these - it's nice to hear the space in the music - how it breathes and how the fills are really tasty though simple.
@patrikasLTL its not meant to be hard. jazz is about feel, feeling the grace notes, and where the accents are. and how one thing carries into another. just.. natural.
To me, in order to be a good rock drummer, you need to be a good jazz drummer because jazz drumming has the rhythm, the groove, the really meaty fills, and the coordination and involves a lot of work. To know rock, know jazz. That's just me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing good ole rock and roll. Love it because playing rock has a lot of drive.
I agree with you about the comparison. To me, it's all about the fills.
Yeah. A lot of metal drummers have had jazz lessons too. Martin Lopez is the best example I can give you. You can see some jazz influence in some Opeth songs.
really mellow, thats how its met to be, it has nothing to do with his color, not every groove has to be a soul train. Its all about style and coloring the song with different flavors at different times and this guy is doing it !
white drummer here with more groove than my black friends.
@v3teran Most jazz is a lot harder to play than this. For me jazz is the hardest, and metal is second, but for completely different reasons of difficulty
@v3teran same here,as a pop dance, then acoustic pop rock and semi country fan,im getting into jazz as well cuz id like to add jazz to my preferences as well
@v3teran Dude, same here, ive always loved jazz, and funk. Im in a funk band myself, but I will always be a sucker for a good riff....Metal is the shit, metal drumming and guitar riffing are just as good as any other genre, it all comes down to personal preference. But I wish I had some metalheads in my town that were at least half way decent at their instrument.....
I like the way how he plays it.. but I don't like the fact that it sound pretty much like white..you know, it doesn't have that delicious groove feeling that, with absolute respect, only black drummers have.. and just a few of white drummers like steve gadd.. but, keep it going man! it was a very clean performance
Thats an interesting point and like you said, with all do respect, i agree. especially when it comes to early jazz and blues, black drummers ruled the genre, and that still stands true today i think.
He is mechanical , not true musician like you say about the black drummers , cause blacks love the music more then themselves (talking about the greatest here).
i agree that its very simple to play, its supposed to be introductory. but same beat as every jazz song? no way! haha listen to some proper jazz (not this) before you post comments man

90% of all rock drummers and rock consumers that dislike jazz do it because they're looking for rock music in it, which they never find.
Rock and jazz have certain things in common, but at the end of the day - it's apples and oranges. Be careful when you compare it.
Jazz is very nice music btw, so is rock.
