It seems pretty basic to me. All you need is the ferromagnetic substance - the ferrofluid in this case - and an electromagnet made of copper. Then design the electromagnet to an artistic shape. Then just play with the current input of the electromagnet. I think it works pretty well.

An "electromagnet" (I don't know if this word is right, I'm not good in english), gets power on, then off, then on, then off....

It looks like an hedgehog cause the ferrofluids are made of Fe, Cu... and Oil. When the fluid" detects" some magnet field, the Fe or Cu is attracted by the magnetic source and by the differents laws (gravity etc...). It happens.
