  • ...A small world indeed!...I too had my heart tied by Dark Shadows or Speed Racer!! lol XD Running home...heck, I flew..but I also had a double reason

-the bullies! I am a bit skeptic to hear that Johnny Depp will be "trying" to portray Barnabus. I watched an interview where he stated he was trying for the original character feel & not to embellish much...but we all know Johnny's "flair" for embellishing characters creatively. I look forward to his rendition. tysvm for sharing with Us!! @;}~

  • so amazing

  • This music was the scariest thing about the show! DS came on just as the school bus got to my house; I'd run in and turn it on, always annoyed if I missed the opening credits...

  • @gomro i remember, depending on where we were living, missing the first 10 MINUTES of nearly every episode when school was in session!..UGH!

  • @gomro DITTO !!!

  • Yeah same here just the music was creepy to me but the water waves and the mansion scenes added more suspense to it also!

  • Ahhh.....childhood memories...I was first introduced to this hoot of a soap opera, when they showed the re-runs on SciFi back in the day

  • The song use to scare the crap out of you??? It still works on me.

  • What colour? Neon light purple?

  • @Fersomling Extreme blueish/purpleish renderings were often used back in the 50's and 60's for seascape imagery...especially in paintings and books...kids stories.

  • @NickDrake101 :

I had the Dark Shadows LP from the 60s, till somebody ripped it off in 2002. By that time, however, the music had been safely downloaded into my computer and onto disk.

I would rush home from Little Creek Elementary School in Norfolk VA in 1966 to watch Dark Shadows, which at the time was still Barnabas-less.

  • @Fersomling Me too, in San Rafael California at Sun Valley School, but I remember much of the time I'd be "multi-tasking" Dark Shadows with either Speed Racer or Thunderbirds . Ahhhh yes...the pre VCR days. The tvs were transistor Sony B&W and a kitchen Sylvania 15 inch B&W.

  • Takes me back to my childhood. Rushing hone from grade school to watch with my Mother. This show was the best.

  • Is that an actual house in the opener? I thought I'd seen it in Mt. Desert Island in Maine, but if it was it was remodeled really garishly.

  • @Vincek88 Yes, the creepy-looking hosue in Dark Shadows is called Carey House in Newport, Rhode Island...It's still standing after all these decades in spite of hurricanes and violent winter storms slamming the shoreline and nearby domiciles.

  • @sherrymandalay.....this is undoubtedly the creepiest music I have ever heard

  • Like Barnabas Collins? Try Sebastian Vasilis: "Last Rites: The Return of Sebastian Vasilis"

  • MF DOOM- Hyssop

  • Gangstarr sample a piece of this for the song (the malitia) but the theme is classic i got the soundtrack. Yo the music is creepy but hey i love it..

  • i liked it alot i want to see the movie

  • I hear people (even teens and kids) humming that theme whenever they see or hear something "spooky". I wonder how many even realize what that tune is from.

  • I'm still bitter that this was cut from the end of the House of Frankenstein Horror Wax museum in Lake George. Since the day it opened they played the Dark Shadows theme music as you leave and then abruptly someone decided the song was dated or something so now there's no spooky music to lead you out. I think it was a very stupid idea for them to cut it considering Burton's doing a new movie.

  • What a GREAT series ! We used to run home from the school bus so as to not miss 1 minute of it. Barnabas Collins was the ultimate bad boy, even better than Vincent Price at scaring the crap outta you. I saw that it went 884 epi's deep. I had NO earthly idea. I do remember it was black and white then color at the end. BTW, niklendimer, it apparently was THE SAME SERIES 50-70's. I saw #884 was the end.

  • @olhapful i also remember running from the bus stop after school to see DS, but sometimes (most of the time) missing the first 10 minutes..the '884' may have been the eposides starting with Barnabas' 'resurrection'-forward..there were actually 1,225 episodes (from June 27, 1966 - April 2, 1971)..i didn't see 'the early days' of DS (b4 Barnabas) until a few years ago, as syndication started at the point of his 'arrival'.......

  • @olhapful We ran home from school too! We were obsessed with this show. I'll never forget the intros in B/W as well as color.

  • @olhapful I agree!!! This was my absolute favorite thing to watch in the afternoon after school and the music makes me insane with happiness to this day! I always wanted to jump into the screen and live there! Had no idea it ran for so long either.. wow!

  • I remember this theme when my babysitter watched it. I was only 4 yrs old and I still get chills listening to it. Its great that YouTube can bring us these memories via its members.

Looking forward to another historic concert like last year's U2 in Pasadena Ca.

  • Clasic.

  • This opening remains awesome -- from the theme, to the title design, to the stormy beach, to the way the mist gives way to reveal the mansion. It was all just so amazing! And remember this was in the 60's! I was heart broken when the show last aired I believe on 04/02/71. It was just way too soon for me (only ran for 5 years) and in hindsight confusing, as I think their was a huge cult following which should have resulted in large Nielsen numbers. ??

  • @TimsDale4ever i was 16 when the last episode of DS aired (and yes, it was 4-2-71)..if you've ever seen the opening to 'Secret Storm', then you may understand how some see DS's opening as something of a rip-off of that..DS had then, and still has, a cult following; but 'back in the day', DS ran it's course and began repeating some storylines, and different affiliates started dropping the show..still in all, i kinda miss it myself..

  • Nothing but cool

  • Wasn't there a "Dark Shadows" series in the 1950s? An elderly friend recalls having seen it as a little-girl, but darned if I can find evidence of it.

  • @nickelindimer according to the IMDb, there was "Dark Shadows: A Crime Does Not Pay Subject", apparently a series of 21-minute shorts shown in movie theatres: "Early study of psychology and murder"..this is all the info i find..don't think it was a tv series, unless there were reruns on television at some time (like the Three Stooges)......

  • @disabled1955 It's pretty clear Nick's friend just got the date wrong for the 66 version, which is this show, but they started to use the colour opening in 67.

  • @nickelindimer Dark Shadows, the soap began 66. And there was a 91 remake.

  • @TheBratKingJareth I guess she's her dates out of whack again... What should I suspect from a 65-y/o self-proclaimed "Hippie-lady" that consumed a fairly high amount of considerably strong "chemicals" for most of her life?

  • I remember watching this with my mom when I was a little kid! :D

  • @Lumenesca Ohhh my gosh!!!! Same!!! haha

  • I love the opening,it's so cool

i close my eyes and i imageine

i'm a ghost and floating over

    a big open field!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This show frightened Richard Thomas (Johnboy)! He quit the Waltons soon after David Selby (Quentin Collins) guested on the Waltons! Read the great bio All About Jeffrey Hunter at amazon to see how Hunter was afraid of another DS performer!

  • this song used to scare the crap out of me when i was little.

  • If anyone can do this show justice with a remake, it's Burton and Depp. So far, recent remakes of my favorite shows have cornered the market on SUCK!

  • the music alone still sends a chill up my spine!

  • I just got back from Acadia National Park and saw this very house!

  • The house is in Newport Rhode island

    its salve regina college.

I stood right up at the front door.

was there another mansion used too?

  • I used to play on those very rocks (in the opening title) as a kid ... spooky!

  • The B/W opening is more errier and the color is just cooler looking!!

  • the b/w opening, to me, is a throwback to all the Universal monster movies of the 30s and 40s - something about b/w that does it!!..wish DS could have stayed in b/w - the atmosphere was pitch perfect...

  • i think the black and white 1 is more errie but the color 1 is kooler

  • One of the best opening TV theme songs EVER.
