Okay first off Linux and Solaris are completely different. There is no real way to compare Linux and Unix as they are completely different. It may look the same (not really), but believe me it is completely different.
Vista? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....Solaris 10, properly managed by a professional is FAR superior to ANYTHING that Windows can cough up. Windows sucks farts.
I thought by the time people got to using Solaris, they'd be more mature and have a greater respect for the technology - past their Windows script kiddie days.
Please leave Solaris alone. Leave it alone for those mature enough to have an appreciation for it.
Why do humans have to take a really good thing and find ways to stuff it up.
Don't post it on YouTube. Tell the development team so the weakness can be fixed.
"I thought by the time people got to using Solaris, they'd be more mature and have a greater respect for the technology - past their Windows script kiddie days."
How does this mean it is bad to discover a security flaw, that a system should not be examined and picked apart and had it's weaknesses found? If they aren't found, they will not be fixed. I don't understand how this is not mature, and I'd love an explanation from you about it.
"Slathering it ALL over YouTube is a really responsible way to deal with security issues."
??? The actual code that does the exploit and the details of it are not visible in the video. The video simply says an exploit exists, it does not provide the details of it. PS. I don't believe in "security through obscurity".
I don't believe in security by obscurity either. I quite often say that myself but my point is, if you find your neighbor's house has a hole in the wall out the back, you tell the neighbor to fix it. You don't send flyers around the neighborhood telling everyone that your neighbor's house has a security issue.
That's true, and as you pointed out before, no specifics were actually given out.
Sorry, but I get rather emotional about people trying to hack into machines that aren't theirs and don't have permission to. I guess I need to get out more and work on my social life :)
Maybe that would work for Solaris, but what about other operating systems like GNU/Linux that are not controlled by any one company? Who'd you tell then?
Personally, I don't like Linux - too mainstream for my liking - too many windows haters use it, not because they love UNIX but because they hate or are jealous of Bill Gates but even Linux distros have their founders like Mark Shuttlworth (Ubuntu), Michael Robertson (Linspire) etc. and then there's the forums.

Do you like Solaris, though -- having a UNIX system on your box?
I've got Solaris on a Sun Microsystems Ultra 5, on my Toshiba Satellite laptop and on a P4. The rest of my machines have a mix of BSDs (OpenBSD and FreeBSD mostly), Linux (Slackware and Suse) and a couple of Windows boxen.
Use OpenBSD. Exploit-free OS! The most secure OS on the planet!

Slathering it ALL over YouTube is a really responsible way to deal with security issues.

No, I guess not, but how do you know he didn't tell the manufacturer already anyway?

How do you know he was hacking into someone else's machine with the crack? He could have just been doing it on his own machine.

What exactly do you like the best about it, anyway? Is it because it's UNIX?

How about Gael Duval, you seem knowledgeable enough, the founder of desktop Linux. Just in case you didn't know, he was responsible for Mandrake.

What does he have to do with Solaris, though?

Nothing, but the original post didn't either. This was a reply to a post a page back so it is relevent.

And how is he not? And why should he not instead _Become_ mature enough to appeaciate it?

is solaris a live cd???

this sucks, solaris, make your own window manager if you wanna make it in the OS market, using gnome doesn't give you any advantaghe over linux!
munkiiboi 4 years ago
They did develop their own, the Java interface. I actually like it BETTER than gnome.
