dude, when i was little i saw one of those at night on my front porch ( i live in Texas). i thought it was someones pet that escaped becuase i didnt think taratulas lived in texas
Tarantulas are the least scariest of spiders once you learn that they're very fragile and that their bite is as harmless and painful as a bee sting. Also just like a bee sting, they're only dangerous if you are allergic to them.
@lckuf ...umm, actually their bite is MUCH more painful than a bee sting and can even sometimes cause minor tissue damage. Also tarantulas arent any more fragile than the other large species of spiders either.
Spiders are unjustly feared. I currently have a phidippus audax jumping spider, they seem to be super intelligent, and seem to enjoy being held.
Despite being a powerful, lightning-fast spider with incredible eyesight, they are very mellow and calm, and even let you know if you're pissing em off. I would feel HORRIBLE if i smashed such a gentle animal. As a sad result, Tegenaria Agrestis has been labeled a dangerous spider, even after research proved otherwise. They are harmless!
You are right spiders are unjustly feared. However some people like me are silly enough to be afraid of them. So.. I say look but don't squash unless you know they are dangerous and are in your living quarters... in that case try to capture and release if at all possible. =]
Saw one of these in Arkansas, it was dark so I couldn't get a good look but you could tell it was a spider by the shape and movement,. It was crossing a gravel road just after dark while I was taking a walk, was big enough that it couldn't be anything other than a tarantula. Wish I had a flashlight to take a better look at it. =P
I didn't even notice it until I almost stepped on the poor guy, then saw him move out of the way and noticed him from the movement (like I said it was dark).
i wish youd go and get one from a store and not take the wild ones home. i own a a. minatrix and i absolutely love tarantulas. they are such amazing creatures. if you own one you know what im talking about.
Out at my parents house in Georgetown TX, these walk across the roads at night. I managed to catch 2 of them awhile back. This one is not a bad size at all. looks to be full grown
Dude that's great! I have a little collection of T's but I really want to catch one in the wild. I went hunting in MO but had no success. Doing a trip to Texas soon, so I'm hoping.
before anyone gets a tarantula they should do thier research !!
G.Rosea (chile rose) is your best starter species duee to them being quite hardy as long as you get your tank setup right and they are hardy feeders as adults
which brings me to saying purchase an adult/sub adult as the hard work has already been done raising them !.
just thought i'd throw my opinion in here because i keep spiders, if anyone has a question feel free to message me !
i wouldnt recommend a rose hair for a beginner whos looking for more of a "thrilling" tarantula. if you own a rose hair you know why =\. Mexican red-knees are great :D...rofl "orange kneed"....fuk you lol
I would look into getting a chilean rose , they are quite docile and can even be handled.
Check my videos in the travels and family playlists there is a video of mine feeding , there great pets. Only need cleaning once a year , require ( for me ) only 15 pence ( UK ) a fortnight for a locust and don't have any smell at all. Amazing pets and great display's too.
@sixpackabby they are not that scary. and they wont bite. i used to have one of these, very beautiful. they may not look like it in this video, but they have a wonderful color. shiny bronze. reminds me of a new bronze coin straight from the bank. they are a sweetheart really.
theres spiders that big in the USA?...i am from canada and the biggest spider i have ever een was about 3 inches long it took 5 times hitting with a fly swatter to kill it:| i really hope those spiders dont ever make there way up here
Oh really, I have been told they are everywhere in Texas and I have lived here like 18 or 19 years and never seen one. I bet Cali has all kinds of cool stuff like that. Thanks for the reply.

Looks like an Oklahoma Brown, but then again maybe the Texas and the Oklahoma are the same species and have different nicknames for it.

@lckuf rubbish. it may have the venom of a bee sting but two large fangs are alot more painful than a bee sting. dont sound off like youve got a pair

Best starter would be a rosehair tarantula. Cheap, every pet store has one, and they cost about 20 bucks. Also very docile.

I've been living in Texas for 3 weeks now and I've already seen one.. It was young though...
My neighbors say at a certain time of the year you can see hundreds of them out at night.
Now I want to see a tarantula hawk lay it's babies in one. :D
