I absolutely LOVE Bernadette Peters! But I must say, (and this will probebly be disputed LOL) I enjoyed Patti LuPone's version of this better. This is a great version, But I prefer the other.
I was lucky enough to see Bernadette on Broadwy in this. my comment was she looked to young to be the mother of grown women. Bernadette, I love you. Always have. When are coming back to theVan Wezel in Sarasota? missed you the last time.

Eek I don't like Bernadette ever since I saw a PBS special as a child and she had a thing in nose. How could they film that. Hello... editing. Anyway if I were a singer I would think twice about following Ethel Merman in this role.
THIS is why she is so great in this role - When you ask what the biggest character songs are for Rose, no one says Small World and You'll Never Get Away. Bernadette makes them as much a part of the character as the big numbers they always mention - She brings out the sexual manipulativeness of the character, which Merman couldn't handle, totally original.

Peters is God's gift to the musical but this performance was plain horrid. A pipsqueak in a roll for a Sherman Tank. A bugle when a trumpet and an entire brass band was required. Not a moment of this performance worked.
I saw Bernadette Peters in Gypsy and I just saw Patti Lupone a couple of days ago. Better Mamma Rose:Patti BUT I think I still love Bernadette more just because she is Bernadette. But I do believe that this number of BP was 10x better than PL's.

I never liked Bernadette as rose and she simply COULDNT do the role. It took forever for her to even do it properly but eventualy her voice held up for her run. So given that Bernadette eventually got the role rght the only thing i dont like about the show is the costumes... something isnt right about them... too much turquoise.

this is pretty good. but it still doesn't beat the original. The ones with Rosalind Russle and Karl Malden.
and then of course natalie woods. nothing beats the originals
