Hooking up your M Audio Axiom 25 to Ableton walkthru

@freerdj I have exactly the same problem with my Oxygen 8v2, I think we need to download the Enigma editor but for me, the M-Audio site doesnt even give me a download link after I register etc, it just sends me back to their homepage which is insanely frustrating..

Hi, When i try to click on the play/stop/record/loop button on ableton and then on my axiom-25, I dont see and mapping being happening. its as if nothing happened. They dont even show up under "MIDI mapping". same for other buttons or knobs. Also I have the sylenth vst open, I want the axiom keyboard to control the vst keyboard but the trigger pads are playing the vst keyboard. The axiom keys are playing somehting else on the vst window.

GOT IT!!!!! okay.... it WAS a simple switch...in "midi sync" preferences, you must have the REMOTE rectangle switched ON for the axiom 25!!!!!! that made all the difference!!!!!!!! the way it was explained to me, that was unnecessary because remote controlled something else....

(jazz guitarist and drummer)... i just have to create a few remixes for a job and i plunked some cash down on ableton and the controller to be able to do it... musically, i'm pretty seamless, but the learning curve on MIDI and ableton has been a motherfucker! lol. hey man... same problem and it's driving me insane!!!! the very first step of your walkthrough is a fail for me for some reason. i go to "edit midi map" and hit the play button and nothing shows up in the MIDI mappings zone!!!!!

@Skaterman3323 still? have you tried reseting the Axiom's factory settings with ENIGMA (m-audio's free downloadable hardware manager)? It didn't help me for shit, but maybe it'll help you! hahaha... you could have inadvertently changed a setting in the controller that's preventing proper communication

Full disclosure: i've decided to say fuck it and i'm back working in Logic for pretty much everything... maybe i'll attempt ableton again in a couple months... lol

@Skaterman3323 oh shit... also... forgot to mention: since i'm completely retarded, i didn't realize that when you're mapping out the midi, you have to click on the "buttons" in Ableton first (nothing happens visually when you do that so it's hard to see that it's ready) and THEN push the button/move the knob on your controller. ...that hung me up for a while, too...

fuggit... i'm going to practice guitar now and forget this computer shit for a while! :)

@vipgetmoney56 Nope you need a computer with a digital audio workstation (DAW) because the Axiom is a midi keyboard and does not send sound but, it sends data signals called MIDI. So with that said you will need a computer (MAC, Linux, or PC) with a DAW (Ableton is the best) to understand the MIDI. Good luck!

First of all, in Ableton's preferences under the MIDI Sync tab, you have to select the "Axiom 25 Classic" as your control surface, setting its input to USB Axiom 25

Also make sure that the "track" (for note input) and "remote" (for DAW control) buttons are clicked (yellow) for this MIDI input on the "MIDI Ports" section right below. You then have to click the "dump" button on the right of the control surface selection dropout boxes, which will overwrite presets 18, 19 and 20 on the Axiom.

To access different presets click the "recall" button on your Axiom (the rightmost button on the bottom row of the function buttons) and while the LCD is flashing press "+" or "-" on the Axiom's numpad.

Basically, you'll use preset 18 to play Impulse, preset 19 to mix and preset 20 to control plugins and devices.

@col2989 I had the same problem, and finally figured it out through the lessons provided within Live8. they're viewable if you open up "help view" from the help menu. first, go through the 'using midi controller' one, then 'manual mapping'.

turns out, the thing that had been holding me back was not hitting the "dump" button in the midi/sync preferences.

No you do not need an external sound card to get good latency. The Axiom is USB and USB 2.0 can get around 60 MB/s. The thing that can help you get better latency is your CPU and RAM also your operating system. Macs a kinda good in this area since they do not need or use drivers which allows you to have little to no latency. PCs must use drivers to take the data than turn it in to audio and etc.

hmm, i finally opened mine from an ebay purchase 2 yrs ago... and 1 of the rotary encoder knobs doesn't register on ableton nor on a midi monitor app . not only that, the sensitivity doesn't work and the markers on the screen bounce around like geiger counters. tried following m-audio's curve adjustment troubleshoot guide, but to no avail. :(

Hey sorry it took me so long to get back to you! What Version of Ableton? If you have Live or Suite it should work anything else it might not allow you to drag audio clips to make a drum rack.
