  • 08:00 onwards is magical

  • The person who made this video can bu sure that I wanted to see the violins and her face during the cadenza.

  • she plays so softly when needed and so angryly when needed. so amazing!

  • 8:26 - 9:02 BEST PART, OMG...

  • I am 58 y/o and I am a fan of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel jarre and, still, I enjoy this soooo much! The maestria, the communication between the conductor and the orchestra and the wonderfull pianist, all that is flabbergasting and highlighting! I luv it!!! That woman is lovely and her playing is wonderful. Her dedication is plain to see and that makes me shiver!

  • if only Rachmaninoff could hear his music being played, he would never write again again

  • @2:50, man I love that conductor's smile..he's like "holy mama...she's good." LOL

  • She's actually beautiful!

  • When she first walked on I was like whos the broad. Wikipedia'd her, guess she one of the best, all those awards! And the proof is here too haha. Didn't even hear of her before

  • She walked into the halls f greatness with that solo.

  • The solo is engaging and explosive.

  • utterly terrifying. Like the Nielsen for Clarinet.

  • How frightening this concerto must be for a pianist

  • how on earth has this only got 93,000 views????????

  • Goodness...

  • To me, Martha is second only to Horowitz in interpretive abilities. I believe I read somewhere that when Rachmaninov heard Horowitz play his third, he himself said he never wanted to play it again.

Martha is more superb at developing synergy with her orchestra.

  • 6 years ago I couldn't listen to her and like it.... now I have changed and ( I do listen to tho piece about once a week) I feel older, I suddenly am enchanted with this rendition. This is so beautiful and reminds me of Anna Karenina if I had to give it a literary name.

  • やっぱり凄いんだ この人は!!ぜんぜん違う。パソコンの仕事をする傍らに聴こうとしてバックミュージックにならない。気持ちがこっちに来てしまう。凄い情熱と集中力。

  • Eight people quit piano lessons... 713 were inspired.

  • Martha is a force of nature

  • This most elaborated Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 3 seems that was waiting the hands of this virtuous unparalleled Argentina artist, to be interpreted in this incredible way.

  • Jesus Christ, this is fucking incredible!

  • 8:30 He says : "I can't belive that this is possible..."

  • well I think her hair is great, like I said before you could make bow strings no problem

  • Whoever made this video was a moron. Must have been more interested in her hair than her piano abilities. The only people watching this are interested in her ability at the piano. All we see at the really interesting parts is her well-coiffed hair.

  • @LeCaptiv1 actually rather than wathcing fingers ı prefer watching face and emotions of a master while playing such masterpiece:)

  • @LeCaptiv1 hahah .. very true

  • Around 5:30 always gives me chills.

  • @samtheman264 Whole this concerto gives me chills :-D

  • @davidmirth Agreed.

  • YES BUT SHE IS NOTHING WITH OUT THE ORCHESTRA, LIKE i SAY, YOU COULD MAKE EXCELLNT BOW STRINGS FROM HER HAIR,THIS IS NOT AN INSULT, BUT A COMPLEMENT, SHE IS MAGNIFICENT

  • Martha Argerich is one of the best....... i love how she play's music <3

  • She Rached it pretty hard yall.

  • Memorable!!!

  • 08:02 MAGNIFICENT!

  • Wich year is this?

  • @thebluewoods 1985 or something around, I'm not sure

  • Beautiful Music.....Beautiful Playing....and what a beautiful Lady....

  • awsome

  • Martha... marry me!

  • Martha really "Shines"....

  • ES UNO DE LOS MEJORES MOVIMIENTOS MUSICALES QUE EL SUSCRITO HA ESCUCHADO. .PERO ESTE CONCIERTO DE RACHMANINOFF -O RACHMANININOV COMO OTROS ESCRIBEN- ES REALMENTE ESPECTACULAR, MARTHA ARGERICH ES UNA DE LA MEJORES INTÉRPRETES DE RACHMANINOFF.

    .

  • This is first time i watch and listen Martha`s play and i must say I am in love with her.Great pianist and unbelievable woman.

Thank God and Rachmaninoff for creating such womand and music.

  • good performance and a nice song!

  • I totally love this.

  • ...what I really like are the lewd smirks on Chailly's face...I guess the correct Catholic term is concupiscence...anyway nice to think even in the middle of a concerto like this he can't put the dirt out of his mind...

  • This is like an episode of who's the boss.

  • Incredible performance by Martha, one of our greatest pianists of all time. Everyone has their personal favorites for Rachmaninoff, and mine is Vladamir Ashkenazy (for Chopin, as well). But this perfomance is a tour-de-force...and one for the ages

  • Some jealous french pianist I won't name out right here once said she was unable to renew her repertoire ...Sorry Moron...her abilities are extending far beyond Schumann's concerto....LOL

  • @mokacode who???

  • @wendy3212 François-René Duchâble ...sorry for the fans...lol

  • @mokacode Are you talking about Helene Grimaud?

  • @andreea140794

No...I'm talking about a dude named François René Duchable..I once heard him on the radio talking kind of mean about Martha Argerich...Maybe he was envying her being successfull ...Who knows...

  • Ricardo Chailly is a master.

  • Undoubtedly the greatest pianist of modern times, the coupling of ardent ferocity, passion and impeccable control are unequaled even by Horowitz

  • @chttrbx totally agree...this version is superior to any of Horowitz's recordings.

  • @chttrbx totally agree...this version is superior to any of Horowitz's recordings.

  • @chttrbx whenever someone says that an individual is "the greatest" in the world of art, you can be assured, undoubtedly, that they are wrong.

  • @oitotheworld23 Whenever someone leaves a comment to simply negate someone else's opinion of a piece of art/performance/person, you can be assured, undoubtedly, that they are small-minded.

  • @th3wing3dpaint3r the "opinion" was presented as fact and was clearly wrong, so i thought i'd say as much. nothing more. enjoy the music.

  • @oitotheworld23 "and was clearly wrong" Yes, you clearly have a superior sense of taste, and can therefore designate the "right" from "wrong" opinions, right?

Also, it's absurd to expect every opinion to start with "in my opinion" or "i think". So, for future reference, when people say "Rachmaninoff is the best" they don't actually mean that as a general fact.

  • @th3wing3dpaint3r take a deep breath there buddy, no need to be so sensitive.

  • @oitotheworld23 o yes! a change of topic...classic :D

  • @th3wing3dpaint3r the central point stands: whenever someone says one is the greatest at something related to art, you can be assured they are wrong. i agree with arthur rubinstein on this point. now whether or not argerich does it for yourself personally is your own thing. there's no need to get your panties in a bundle over this. but we could beat this horse to death if you'd like. you said she's undoubtedly the best, which is obviously incorrect. let's just say it's your opinion that she's...

  • @oitotheworld23 Your problem is that you actually think there's a universally accepted standard for who "the best" is. "The best", at the end of the day, is whoever you enjoy listening to the most. And nothing is "obvious" about the statement being incorrect. Would the evidence be your personal preference? What the majority think?

The issue is not you liking or hating any pianist, it's the fact that you actually think your opinions are superior :s

  • @th3wing3dpaint3r ugh. your tone makes me guess that you're a liberal? it's not about being superior, but correct or incorrect.

  • @oitotheworld23 Your tone makes me guess that you're a bigot? "correct / Incorrect" apply to maths, not art.

  • @th3wing3dpaint3r did i insult your mom or something? you really need to get over this. just take a deep breath and relaaaax. you were wrong, nbd. get over it.

  • @oitotheworld23 Again, a topic change with no intelligent input whatsoever :D

  • @th3wing3dpaint3r the best and call it a day

  • @chttrbx

correct me if i am wrong but didn´t even horowitz say once that she play some great parts like rachmaninoffs third better than he could? I have read this quote once in a book but can´t find it anymore...

  • @chttrbx Yes I agree.

  • Can anyone tell me when this performance was?

  • I had no idea until now that my hairs could stand up for nine minutes in a row.

  • @hugginduff lol xD

  • who's the jerk with the batton, he think's ye is so clever

  • Así da mucho gusto escuchar el concierto 3 de Rachmaninov !!!!

  • I've heard better at 2011 6th festival of world symphonic orchestra in Moscow. they were performed by Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra. yep. slightly better.

  • Omg I can't decide which is better!!! Martha Agerich or Horowitz!!!

I do feel like she plays too fast in this one.

HOWEVER, I also feel like Horowitz old age in his recordings effected his piano playing ability and is a little more sloppy.

  • @tjtheplay Horowitz !!!!! He just banged away. Not abel to touch Vanya.

  • @tjtheplay Yes, very hard to decide. One brings to it something the other doesn't. Argerich has a canonically classical approach. This is why I prefer her for Prokofiev. But Horowitz has got the Russian story down. Much more storytelling going on with Horowitz. The clarity of Argerich, though, is phenomenal.

  • whoever produced this video did a terrible job, why do I want to look at her head when she is playing?

  • martha you are a star

  • Russian lost their culture after the revolution. Now we not only do Tchaykovsky or Rahmaninoff, to Michael Jackson far (((((

  • oh. my. goodness. such power.

  • I like the clarity of some phrases, for example from 1:25 to 2:40 she is perfect, but in other moments, for example the end of the first period at 2:50 - 3:03 it is too rushed, typical characteristic of this great interpreter.

I have read some comments about the fact that this piece is better played by mens for the power of the sound : this is totally wrong with Argerich, in fact her problem is exactly the opposite, she never found a way to control her aggressivity.

  • @3BoMc I love watching the expression on Chailly's face at 2:45, where he starts rolling his eyes... and it breaks out in a smirk at 2:52. It says it all.

  • Probably the greatest ever recorded performance of Rachmaninoff's 3rd Concerto. Its aliveness and vitality is very uplifting. Even better than the sublime Vladimir Ashkenazy recordings which I love.

  • Im gonna watch her perform in June!!! :D :D

  • @freya38 How can I find out her concert schedule? I can't seem to find her official website or whatever it is...

  • @pianoandvideogames I was browsing the southbank website (a venue in London, where I live) randomly and saw that she's coming!! Was so excited bought the ticket there n then!

  • Does anyone know the date of this performance? I know it was between 1982 and 1989 since that was the time frame in which Riccardo Chailly was the principal conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (according to Wikipedia).

  • @pianoandvideogames It was performed and live recorded in late 1982

  • @pianoandvideogames December......to be exact

  • @pianoandvideogames December 5th, 1982 to be even more exact. :)

  • What orchestra is Riccardo Chailly conducting? Leipzig Gewandhaus?

  • @3636Mary It is the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin.

  • very fast but all in all a fantastic performance... good to the ear and every note perfectly adressed... orchestra better keep up;-)

  • ohmy god chuck norris conductor

  • Martha Argerich's playing is special.. no one can copy her music :)

This Concerto played by Archerich is Awesome ! :)

I wish i could play like her ...(in my dream .. x_x)

  • I love how the conductor has to keep checking back on Martha to make sure He is doing okay. LOL

  • Unforgettable performance. I think that Argerich is one of the greatest pianist in the history of piano. In this performance show us how she is giant

  • Clueless camera man!!!

  • Clueless cameraman!!!

  • She's fantastic. Beautiful full-bodied tone. An inspirational performance. Makes me want to play again...

  • Eu me pergunto, quando ela tocará novamente este concerto...

  • This performance is perfection, I can't possibly say anything more.

  • Pity the camera man didn't focus on her hands at all!

  • 4 people don't know what is music.

  • Why are all the russian composers so genial ?

  • I am sure, Rachmaninov loves this great concert!

The Conductor and Martha. :-) WOW

  • Have any of you noticed that she plays without musical scores, then she plays it all by heart?

  • 8:53. Is she playing faster than the orchestra?

  • @LordCalvinHastings shut the fuck up man

    you know what

  • @Kcohlorskyfo Shut the fuck up yourself. It was a question. If you can't answer it, go away.

  • @Kcohlorskyfo Well, at least tell me what you found so offensive in my question.

  • @LordCalvinHastings Definitely not. The tempo for each performing is previously establisted by the soloist and the conductor of the orchestra.

  • I wish I could somehow convince Martha to play Chopin solo pieces again. Now that she is at the peak of her career musically, it would be amazing to hear her play the old pieces again.

  • @LordCalvinHastings I absolutely agree... The only 'old pieces' she plays are Chopin, Schumann and Beethoven concertos, and she totally ended with solo pieces. I do understand that she doesn't like the feeling of playin' alone, but for us, listeners, it's such a pity, to be disabled to hear it again...

  • Gosh, I love this woman.

  • this is so emotional its brilliant fantastic

  • I wonder... I wonder what she's muttering to herself while she plays this. And I wonder if she didn't get it on with Chailly. There's no particular reason to assume this, except that I'm always happy when a member of team beard gets to have sex with a goddess. However, if their plan was to get to know each other so he could make the orchestra keep up with her, it didn't work.

  • Grandiose!

  • wonderful thank you for this very much Grazie Mille! che anno?

  • Qué belleza. De qué año es la grabación y dónde?

  • UNIQUE!!! She is the best doing this

  • I prefer this over Stephen Hough's performance. Argerich has so much fire and beauty in her playing.

  • there's another upload of this concerto with poorer quality, yours is better, I can't thank ya enough!

  • To make this even more difficult to decide, check Yefim Bronfman's performance... brilliant!

  • yes! magnificent performance. she's got it!

  • I have this on CD,, but to see it performed is amazing. What was the conductor thinking at 2.53 ? Something like "Wow, this is good, really good."

  • A superb treat, a transcendent collective performance! Such power. such beauty! Argerich is stunning, she belongs to the small elite of the greatest pianists. Each has his or her way. As musical theatre, this is a musical Adam and Eve —the story from the time of the Fall and heroic trek into our real world. More existential than we give Rachmaninoff credit for. Chailly pantomimes the emotions; the orchestra plays a wonderful chorus. Among the best ever.

  • 8:30 - now the conductor and orchestra awaken and know they are in for an epic perfomance.

  • @rbrtwllc Chailly realised it at 2:53 :)

  • You are damn right! Look at the expression on Chailly's face. Haha.

  • @rbrtwllc Yes :-)) Too bad the conductor and orchestra did not do her justice. She is extraordinary, they are discordent and wanting!

  • Wundervoll, diese Einspielung! Argerich in Höchstform.

  • ROFL!! 4:53-5:00

  • I'd say both Argerich and Horowitz's versions are very coherent in their own ways.

Argerich has that fantastic driven energy and pianistic perfection.

But Horowitz is just... charming! There's no other word. :) I'm having trouble deciding who's the best in absolute terms.

  • Brilliant and ADHD. I adore her.

  • 1 - It's pathetic those people who think necessary do criticize Argerich in order to put their favourite pianist forward.

oodacoo, you find this too fast ? listen to Horowitz with barbirolli, he is as fast if not faster.

Colourless ? Argerich has always been famed for her wide range of tonal shading. Try to listen this on a good Hi-Fi system to appreciate her wonderful sound.

Weak octaves ? her octaves are known to be among the most formidable of all.

    This is near slander !

  • I didn't specified that I was talking about New York, 1978 with Zubin Mehta and not to the 1941 performance. I do have a pretty good Hi-Fi system where I listen to both and I still think Horowitz is better. Among the best is right... but not as good.... are you really saying that Argerich has better or stronger octaves than Horowitz? Really? Are you sure?

  • Oodacoo, yes I maintain that Argerich's octaves are among the best in term of speed, strength and accuracy, in the same league as Horowitz, and if there is a gap between both, without any doubt it is very very small.

  • actually, libel, cuz it's written.

  • 2 - oodacoo : First, Horowitz does not need you to criticize Argerich, or anyone else, to be recognized as one of the greatest pianist ever.

Second, whether you like it or not, Argerich's Rach3 is one of the best rendition of this work, and quite a match for Horowitz.

  • Horowitz told me to do this. He talks to me.

  • the melody after 9 minutes is so mysterious!!!

  • 08:28 simplemente glorioso!!!!!

  • la divina!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Her touch is great...

  • It's like I always say, the bigger the hair the better the pianist...

  • Rachmaninov had very short hair...

  • And Hofmann

  • Lol hahaha

  • I totally agree that Martha is one of the greatest pianist ever. But I have to say that I prefer the concerto played by a man cause of the weight needs. Its one of the best performances but is played too fast and she somewhere loses the sence of the feeling and the clearness of the melody. The best performance was by Horowith which was better than Rachmaninoff's and no one did reach it yet. When Rach heard Horowitz's performance he was so impressed that he never performed his concerto again!!!

  • but Rachmaninoff did play the third again, and even made a recording. must be another symphonic hyperbole of yours

  • You just don´t know what you are talking about, so shut up!! And by the way, among a series of great performances, I must say that no one compares to argerich´s one as far as deepness, clarity, interpretation and technical perfection. Amazing!!

  • look man...I did not said that to argue with someone or make a fight here. This is my opinion and how i respect someone else opinion even if i dont like it i expect from others to respect mine. You are not in the right position telling me to shut up and being rude. Add me as many (-) as you want but dont try pushing me to your opinion. YES MARTHA IS GREAT AND I DINT SAID THE OPPOSITE. But I prefer Horowitz.....its my opinion.
