Funny you say it's slow and that the controls suck as this game was co-developed by Paradigm Entertainment who primarily worked on realistic flight simulation technology for major space and aviation clients (NASA, Lockheed Martin, Boeing). I would imagine they have a better understanding than you of how motion and the sensation of speed should feel in a game like this.

The N64 Analog stick used light emitting diodes and photo detectors controlled by sensor wheels allowing for an accurate direct digital read. The sensor wheels give direct correlation to the stick position therefore a very high level of control for a videogame at that time. You say "you can't tell how close you are to anything", it's called using spacial awareness and most importantly SKILL.

Seeing those guys fail hard at the mission where you need to glide down the waterfall and clear all rings made me laugh. "Try clearing three rings in a row.." Guess what? I cleared all of them and made a perfect landing. Took a while tho.

I loved this game. This guy is an IDIOT. Seriously the graphics were awesome, and it was a simulator so the play control was matched accordingly. If you don't like simulators then of course you won't like it's relaxing slow going style. I must have spent HOURS viewing all of the scenery. I WOULD pay $50 for a Wii version, and I saved up to pay the $60 plus tax this cost at N64 launch in 1996.
This game will forever be the "other launch title" next to Super Mario 64. Sad, because I find this game brilliant and an even better game. I owned all of the N64's premier titles, but I always came back to playing this one the most.

Pilotwings was no cake walk on the SENS and N64, but still pretty damn fun. You buy the game for its wonderful experience of flying as well as the difficulty and challenge as well. They go hand and hand. The SNES game was the same with it's sensitivity, but that was why the game was slow. It was all about accurate use of controls, quick planning, and perception. this review is crap, some games take more getting used to as far as controls than others. in my country pro evolution soccer is wildly popular, but also in this game does it take very much time to get use to the controls. how long did you play this game if you can't clear three hoops? pilotiwngs was a great game, not only were the vibes in this game awesome, it also had one of the best soundtracks ever. shame on you.

Ugh, this made me angry. Seriously man, this game is one of the best ever made, no exaggeration. The controls are well designed, and predictable once you've got used to them. Practice does make perfect, as anyone that put the time and effort to get all golds can attest. And what happened to enjoying hard games BECAUSE they're hard? The modern attitude of complaining if you can't complete a game is what's killing videogames.

Glad Nintendo have finally got round to making Pilotwings again for the 3DS. Can remember P64 being part of the bundle with Mario64 when I got my Jap N64 on import just after release, good times :)

He's right that controlling the vehicles isn't that easy, but then again, it's a simulation and not an action game, you can guess it's going to be the tough gameplay type rather than fast pewpew fun. If you don't like this kind of game, better don't play it. :D

i was 10 years old, maybe a bit younger, but the steering wasnt a challenge.with only one thing i had problems, shooting the pilot , on the hidden target hell that wasnt easy!most funny was attacking the robot with the gyrocopter, he throws stones to defend. :-D

This guy is talking jibberish!!!!!! Pilot wings was, and is a beautifully made game even with its now fading graphics you will still nod your head about like a big dork as you try your best to manouver because the flying contraptions feel like they have real weight and solid physics. When the guy says its rubbish because its too tough he is WRONG WRONG WRONG! The fact that you can play over and over to claw more points for your own satisfaction is where its longevity is. A classic in my eyes!!!!
