It's not laughing at the pronunciation, but it is portraying them as fools using old stereotypes. No joke was made out of the stars' terrible Japanese.

@theendingnote i'd say that LIT does get it right though. it's not just a film about tokyo, it's a film about being an outsider in tokyo, and i'd say coppola gets that about as right as she could, having had that experience myself. i did the same search earlier, an article called 'A Sampling of Japanese Comment on LIT' gives both sides of the argument from a japanese perspective. i can understand your concern about stereotyping issues to an extent, i'll have to re-watch it with that in mind.

I doubt they would of built that kind of relationship if they met in the states.

So it would be very easy for her to overlook the potential racism and stereotype concerning the political tension between the two countries' people.
