I don't have an acoustic guitar so this is just a guess. There are two techniques involved in the strumming parts.

First, on the first beat of each chord, he taps the guitar's body ABOVE the strings with the base of his palm. This impact causes the strings to vibrate without being touched, while also producing the bass tap.

Next, on the second beat of the same chord, he slaps the guitar body BELOW the strings, while the base of his palm mutes the strings, creating the treble tap.

I believe the chords are just C, G, Am, F repeated for the most part, with a capo on the fifth fret, so the chords are transposed to F, C, Dm, Bb. That's the easy part, but the subtleties lie in the strumming techniques, which include tapping the body of the guitar and tapping the strings (he taps the strings at the end of the intro section).

It's a very beautiful example of how strumming and tapping can be used to create a rich rhythm guitar sound. I love this song. :)
