I met Rickles. I was at Sportsman Park Racetrack in the clubhouse with my wife on a week night in the late 70's. Place was mostly empty, and I spotted Rickles dining with 3 others. I knew I had to say hello no matter what abuse I would get. So I went over and politely said, "Mr. Rickles, I had to say hi." Not only was he unabusive. He shook my hand, introduced his wife and friends and asked if I'd like to join them for a while. I didn't want to impose so I declined. He was-and is-a class act

These were the days before "political correctness." People liked one another a little better when they could express themselves with good natured humor and I can tell you from having been there, there was absolutely no animosity or discrimination against black performers from the true greats, Hope, Dean, Frank, Lucy, etc. - - - only mutual respect and genuine friendship. Ironically, this type of humor actually served to lessen anger & tensions between the races back in the day. Personally, I never experienced racial tensions even through I lived in both Mississippi & Alabama as a child. On the common folk level, we all got along and there was NO agenda or ideology of racial supremacy. I know there were/are bigots out there, but they were/are bigoted on many levels, not just on the mattter of race. I thank GOD for this honest humor and for those who get it!
You can tell that Wilt Chamberlain wasn't so enthused. He was just kind of going along with the program. Actually I have listened to this clip twice and I am still trying to figure out what was funny about it. I know that people like Sammy Davis Jr. and Nat King Cole and others had to put up with a lot. I do a whole lot of reading and I know a lot of what they had to go through with behind the scenes, but they had to come on stage and entertain and perform and smile like it was all good.

I agree, Rickles was able to inject humor into the stupidity of racial conflict. The only one who could do that and get a laugh. I watched him all the time on TV. He is also a good actor from TV and movies.
I saw Rickles once. A very good show, indeed. It was a theater in the round in upstate NY.
Jerry Vale was the opening act. We got there early and stuck our heads inside. About 1,000 women were in there knitting ans singing along with Mr. Vale.
My friends and I went to the bar.
Rickles was "on" from the introduction through about 3/4 of the way through when he did a song and dance number, "I'm a Nice Guy."

One othe best stories I've ever heard was when Sinatra had Sammy's back when some bigot white club owners didn't want Sammy to enter through the front with the rest of bill. I agree, Rickles was able to inject humor into the stupidity of racial conflict. The only one who could do that and get a laugh. I watched him all the time on TV. He is also a good actor from TV and movies.

I saw Rickles once. A very good show, indeed. It was a theater in the round in upstate NY.
Jerry Vale was the opening act. We got there early and stuck our heads inside. About 1,000 women were in there knitting ans singing along with Mr. Vale.
My friends and I went to the bar.
Rickles was "on" from the introduction through about 3/4 of the way through when he did a song and dance number, "I'm a Nice Guy."
He act doesn't vary, but he keeps it topical.

This is unfortunately once upon a time. All of these pioneers are gone with the exception of just a few. One othe best stories I've ever heard was when Sinatra had Sammy's back when some bigot white club owners didn't want Sammy to enter through the front with the rest of bill. Sinatra told him, if he's gotta come through the back then we don't enter through the front. CLASS!!!

Flip Wilson all the great black legends. Mr Rickles loved them because they were
his friends & he admired & respected them. Back in those day's god bless you Mr. Dean Martin you could watch a great show & not be labeled a racist when

just watched several of dean's roasts and i must say they bring back fond memories
