  • holy shit what an amazing horn lineup.

  • Arthur Blythe's phrasing is like Cannonball's, but his playing has those Dolphy-like jumps. Oh, man. Great style.

  • I loved the way the band played... wow. Arthur, Idris, and Don caught my attention the most.

  • They fuck the form so hard in this.

  • May it be that Freeman misses the B section in the changes... ?!!

  • Los solos van por este orden :

Nathan Davis : saxo tenor ; Arthur Blythe : saxo alto; Chico Freeman : saxo tenor ;Sam Rivers : saxo tenor ; Don Pullen : piano (original y avanzado solo).

(el contrabajista es Santi Debriano , y el baterista es Idris Muhammad )

  • funny i was just thinking of Sam Rivers this morning....

  • : be sure to hang around for Pullen's solo !!

  • Fu@$%ing AAA+

  • best solos from don pullen and nathan davis. sam rivers is great, one of the greatests, but not on this track; that was the sloppy one, at least on his standars.

    nice clip...thanks.

  • wow don pullen is incredible. i greatly enjoyed the other solos too

  • and, if you listen and count....he keeps the form.

of course, it's the great don pullen!

  • don pullen don pullen don pullen!!!!!!!!

amazing, oneof the truly great pianists. nobody plays with that kind of spirit, creativity and facility.

    G-d bless him!!1 i saw him w/george adams. amazing.

  • dyk es more

  • Awesome..Whoever said Don Pullen played a 'sloppy 'solo doesn't know a thing about rhythm...did he play some way out stuff? sure...but, was it 'sloppy'? Not by a long shot from mars...by the way,one doesn't need eyes to "look up once", as long as one has ears to listen...Peace

  • Jazz was never supposed to be a "tradition" to be respected to the letter- that is the way to enshrinement and death- it was meant to be an ever evolving format through which creative instrumentalists/improvisers/ spontaneous composers could apply their own unique voices. Jazz is fading quickly because it has become stagnant-the very antithesis of the art.

  • @DarkeningSkies1 You speak the truth brotha...

  • To anybody who doesn't think Don Pullen is amazing...

    5:30 what a listener! I love it.

  • Someone made a comment that one of the solos sounded ''sloppy''. I think theres more to the beauty of this music than trying to sound perfectly clean all the time, the heart and soul will never lie.

  • don pullen, you totally rule, make conservatives squirm and confirm ways of greatness to the rest. totally original. brilliant.

  • pullen... the only good sax player is arthur blythe... what the fuck..

  • DON PULLEN IS STRIAGHT OUT OF CONTROL

  • If you didn't know..."It's called playing out within" Pullin is a great musician!

  • ..cont'd) All in all, we are entitled to our own opinions, right? Again, I just felt like Pullen's performance (this track only, mind u) was distasteful, non-swinging, and down-right sloppy - i mean, dude did not even look up once - it's as if he had that solo planned before he came to the show.. I'll take your comment as a compliment, btw...it's all love

  • There are many reasons to love Pullen from both a technical and aesthetic point of view. He was one of the greats truly, regardless of what the man in the street thinks, because the greats themselves thought he was a great. Personally I love the fireworks in his playing but he was also one of the greatest ballad players of all... A noble spirit. R.I.P

  • Yeah, i hear u (alejnikov; all others concerned) but....You are aware that you are making quite a bold statement putting Pullen in the same category as Mingus, Shepp, and Trane, right? That being said: I've always enjoyed the un-conventional Eric Dolphy, Andrew Hill, and even the newer Jason Moran and Greg Osby - would that still make me a traditionalist?

  • Well said, kingpleasure. Pullen's stylistic range was phenomenal. I was fortunate enough to hear Pullen play a solo concert at Carnegie Hall. He was a truly original musician.

  • Gallantfellow- so sad.

  • I wonder what is running the rhythm? Is it the gum or the drum?

  • In other words, just cause you can't hear it, doesn't mean he ain't playing it.

  • On behalf of the late Charlie Mingus, who chose Don Pullen for his quartet because of his incredible playing, & who unfortunately is not around to say it: please open your mind's ears & listen to what the cat is puttin down, rather than to a static concept of some rigid structure U think jazz is supposed to follow. Don Pullen was one of the great pianists in jazz & follows in the tradition of Jackie Byard, Monk, Lennie Tristano, George Russell & Art Tatum: all innovators who broke the "rules".

  • Now i know u don't have to stay within the changes to be 'good'..but sorry to the cats who commented prior to me..but your boy Pullen is straight BULL-Crapping on this hit - practice at home man...can u say contrived?..

On a lighter note..Idris, how u swing so hard and be so funky at the same time?

  • Funny thing is: Your criticism is exactly the same as the one of the traditionalist jazz critics of the 60s, when they heard the late Mingus, Shepp, Coltrane, and the other cats who were into the "New Thing".

And btw: Being a jazz player myself I always appreciate a joyfull de-construction of what is believed to be standard.

  • Sure looks like my Handcraft stencil.

I thought he usually played a Conn, but this looks like a Martin.

  • great vid! is the alto an older martin handcraft? it sounds awesome and its so nice to see an often overlooked older horn being used

  • Looks like a HC and not a Conn: split bell keys, no microtuner (course it could be a Conn stencil then), I don't think it has the Mercedes Benz guard, and the octave key ring looks more HC than Conn. But I can't see it clearly enough to be sure or see the pinky table, so it's just a guess.

  • amazing

  • a thought....... so glad jazz exists and even happier that i am able to enjoy it!!!!!

  • Wow. Great musicians, great video.

  • love Idris Muhammad! what a drummer

  • iv always thought that black people are some kind of superhumans, and this proves my point :)

  • i know you don't mean any offense by your comment but it does come across as kind of racist, albeit in an inverted way. There are/were tons of great white, asian, hispanic etc. musicians in jazz, although yes it has been dominated by black people and is rooted in black culture. Culture is the main thing to emphasize, as I absolutely do not believe it to be a genetic thing: rhythm, syncopation, improvisation are major features of african music which was transferred to black american culture.

  • watching and hearing don pullen play piano

just elevated me out of a depression

    true

  • All these cats are great but it's Pullen that steals the show!

  • i saw this band in London, but the line-up had Benny Golson, Kirk Lightsey & Don Moye.

    love Idris!!

  • Accidental thumbs down! Accidental! Sam IZZ THE MAN!! (As are ther rest)

  • that is one of the most creative pianists I have EVER seen.

  • Santi is my old professor and friend. FUCK, can that dude play!

  • Arthur Blythe izzz dah MAAAAAN!

  • Aw man, wheres the rest of this video?! I wanna see them trade!!!!11 Thanks for posting this!!!

  • love it!

  • Awesome stuff. Thanks for sharing this vid with you tube.
