harriter88, how long do you practice these songs? Because I am learning Tatum and I am just curious how long it takes others to learn how to play his songs?
Excellent...but such a good performer deserves better than a synthetic piano & watch for the sound of the recording not as good as the one recorded in the "a little jazz exercise"!
wonderfully done! but may I inquire how long you've been playing, and what the sheet music is (if that is how you did it)? I know for a Tatum piece you must use your ears intently and really feel what your playing.
Terry, I've heard lots of people do Tatum, and to my ears, you've come the closest. The most amazing thing about Tatum wasn't his harmonic imagination, or the sheer # of notes he played, but how relaxed and "organic" he could be while doing so damn much. And you've really got that down. Lovely job. (And yes, we must get you a real piano, dude---this is ridiculous!!)
not true at all. same but with a different part of the universe leading the way. Bach didnT copy anyone, neither did LVB and they would cringe at what is being taught or passed off as "classical." music is music, no words can ever come close to explaining or describing it.
I was reffering to playing classical music in present times.. With jazz, it's always going to be improvised, with people playing their own version of the song.
Actually Dick Hyman was right. Nobody can play like Tatum. There are lots of imitators mind you!....(no offence harriter88). But there is only one Art Tatum.
Very nice. Ever thought about buying yourself an acoustic piano? Not being facitious. You play very, very well. Would have loved to have seen it on an acoustic.
Hey, man, you're great!! You capture the spirit of Art Tatum better than anyone I've seen, but you're video reminds me of Schroeder from the Peanuts cartoons. Keet it up.
Thanks for getting back with me. I am in Ventura CA which is only about 55 min north of LA CA. I hope to be making my piano avail for hire in the near future. Its a New York Steinway Concert Grand with tremendous projective Power and Beautiful tone, clarity and colors. As you know every piano is very much an individual and only some really end up being great pianos for reasons that are still somewhat mysterious, because they try to keep things very consistent when building them.
I don't usually wanna listen to pianists trying to mimick Tatum since they are usually Very Far off but this recording just blew me away. I have been a classical pianist my whole life and know full well how difficult it can be to execute those runs with such relaxed precision and elegance of phrasing. As so many others have said, you need a good piano to make a First Class recording with. I have an Exceptional Steinway Concert Grand that would be incredible for you to make a recording on.
Overwhelming! I haven't been that impressed and moved by a performance for a long time! Congratulations on your superlative talent and taste. Thanks to you, Art Tatum lives!
I am stunned by your talent. Thanks for inspiring me to keep practicing piano. Do you have any advice on how I could start learning some of the Tatum right-hand descending runs?
Man, I can play very well indeed but you are awesome my man!!!! Pass on your knowldge some more. How did you lean all those chops? Even Oscar Peterson would be jealous. Keep on keeping on!
yo! ter... GREAT to see U stil@it! i'm still in Japan and so hope to get you over here for a tour.
so cooL you seem happy doing what you do, which is AMAZING. i'm so glad i know you and am quite honored that we have played together. Hope we can do it again.
A fortnight away? Not sure if I can hold-off on bathing that long.... but I'll try. Do I need to sign a release for the post.... do YOU?! I no longer work for scale, my friend.
Technically brilliant, you are very gifted to be able to play an Art Tatum tune. One of the best youtube jazz piano videos here i think. apart from the master himself of course, art tatum.
Hey Harriter. I shared your page with a couple of business associates of mine who tend to be more "right-brained" once they are off the clock. You blew them away. NOt sure if they will post any of their thoughts directly, but speaking for them, one says; "That's is totally incredible. As effortless as breathing to the guy. What a gift." Just wanted to share that with you. Keeping it Joyous....
Thanks for your reply; you are truly an inspiration!
For the last couple of weeks I have been working on "Tea for Two" as played on the "Piano Starts Here" CD, and am trying hard not to lose heart. I can play it reasonably well at about half tempo, but no faster. I know exactly what you mean with regard to the Chopin Etudes; I had similar problems with Op.10 No. 1, but after coming back to it from a long break, I found I could play it up to speed. Perhaps their is hope for me yet!

I would say with Jazz it's Imagination :)
With classical, it's how well you can play exactly what somebody before you has already done

Wow... you are quite a talented pianist.
Now the next step is to take Tatum's chops and do your own improv. You can definitely cut it.
