This breaks my heart because Carol wants Joan so badly she'd give up her identity as a woman to be with her. "Just think of me as a boy" she says. So sad.
Awww, nothing like professing your undying love to someone, just to be rejected!!!! But, there for a split second, i think she seriously thought about kissing her. Right before putting her out of her misery. And once again it is proven that your heart overrules your brain.
Christina is super HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT and gorgeous!!!
I would definitely turn into a lesbian for Christina if I were a woman!!!
Christina has a perfect, extremely beautiful looks!!!
There's not a bit doubt that all women would want to turn lesbians for her!!! Just by looking at her!!! This is a perfect woman on the entire planet!!!
I LOVE the time before Joan rejects her.. when she just looks at her.. its like you can see Joans wheels turning.. but she is such a woman that even Carols shocking revalation.. Joan is always on her game!
Societal pressures really screwed a lot of people up in those days. We're slightly better now, but not really. At least you don't get jailed for being "gay" these days....
I'm so totally Carol. I'd follow Joan wherever, too. I was actually relieved at Joan's reaction. She didn't freak out or attack her friend, as I thought she might. She shut her down (breaking her heart) about as gently as could be expected for the times. I'm so glad I was neither a woman nor a lesbian back then. It's been hard enough these past few decades.
What a tough scene. The first time I watched this, I laughed my ass off because it was so unexpected in this series. But it's so sad - Carol's heart gets ripped out, and she probably can't even talk to anyone about it.
I was reading a book while watching this episode, then i heard this, and had o look up and my mom was in the room, and she's like "what the hell are you watching". I felt for carol. This was a wonderful scene.
Why be shocked? I think one of the themes of Mad Men is that appearances count for more than realities. Don Draper doesn't have a happy marriage, yet he's got the 2 kids, dog, blonde wife and house in the country. And I think it all bores him silly, so he cheats.
I was a little bit shocked when I saw that scene. There's another gay closted(maybe not so closeted) which is great. I love how they speak this coded lingo. Sal and Elliot in the resturant saying their feeling w/t actually saying their feelings. i feel so bad for Carol she would never have a shot with Joan. Maybe after a few shots of whiskey that would change... carol and Sal should B buds.
She's Christina Hendricks! She's so hot you can't blame women for wanting her too!

I also love the tension in Joans face at 2:17 to about 2:21.. so much going on in her head! Hendricks deserved a Emmy for those seconds alone!!

You have to remember this show takes place in 1960. If you were gay, you had a mental illness.
Why can't more women look like Christina Hendricks? She got some curves on her. Yummy, yummy. ;)
