One thing that attracted me to Genesis in the early 70s was how well the managed dynamics. Like many bands of that time, They honed their chops and dynamics via live performance, which helped make their tracking easier. I'm not saying that I uniformly like all the record mixes but given how harmonically rich their music is, I'm amazed at how great, overall, their music sounds. My personal fave is SEBTP. Of course my handle tells you that I was a glam freak but I still loved Genesis.
P.S. Ah, but not so fast, I agree peter sings the song more hauntingly than phil, which leads me to loving both versions the same. I just love genesis. best live band ever .
I too am in the ranks of this dogmatic genesis fandom, but please with all due respect, don't be trashing phil singing the cage, thank goodness he carried on the gabriel stuff. my first genesis lp was three sides live, from there I started my genesis journey backwards. I am a junkie, I cherish the peter era and the phil era EQUALLY. Phil has amazing energy singing in the cage and he sings better than peter, peter even admitted that phil has the better pipes.
@WintersWar ~ ah...I absolutely agree with you, WW. I, too, treasure them equally...for each man brings such a unique set of qualities to the table of vocals to Genesis' work! And, yes...Phil has (always had) a better set of pipes and is always pitch-perfect (something even PG would also admit to not always having ;-) xoxo Lil
@WintersWar part 2: I note that 3 Sides Live was your first Genesis album. In my case it was Tresspass.. . . yes I'm an oldie :) so Gabriel was the master lyricist and vocalist for me. Respect though from one Genesis fan to another.
@WintersWar: Ok, I've just seen your ps above . . . . if I read that, I wouldn't have posted my two part comment to you. We're on the same wavelength :).
@arthurmee ~ Yes, actually Nursery Cryme was my first-ever purchased Genesis album (in 1975, when I was 15 yrs old ;-)...SEBTP, FOXTROT and The Lamb came very quickly on the heels of that initial purchase! xoxo Lil
I really don't see that LileighWhite was trashing Phil's singing, with respect. She did quite clearly say, that it was technically accurate. However, you surely agree that Peter's singing was much more evocative and representative of the song's mood and meanings. Technical accuracy is not all. That said, I do go along with your comment that thank goodness he carried on where Peter left off. Heh, it's probably down to our first experiences with Genesis.
I have just come across this. Excellent stuff LilLeigh. As a huge Genesis fan during the 70s, I still regard The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway as not only Genesis' finest album but also one of the best rock albums ever produced. I agree entirely about the comparisons you highlight about Gabriel's emotive and haunting vocals against Collins' insipid rendition. It is obvious that this album has totally captured your imagination, as it has for me since first hearing it back the mid 70s. Respect
@ThefightingCelt ~ Why thank you, Celt, for your very validating and lovely comments aimed my way! I now bow to you, my dear, for recognizing The Lamb as something far and away more profound than most of what was integrated into the rock scene, at that time (on so many levels ;-)
Me too and I'm a chick! She's just everything rolled into one....passionate, learned, eloquent and completely into this music. You know, I've just decided that she looks like a more beautiful Meryl Streep from the past, but her looks are just a part of the package.
@SuperDflower ~ LOL .you know what, Super D? You are not far off with that surmise! When I was in college (many, many moons ago *snort of laughter*)..the film "French Lieutenants Woman" was released..and Meryl (with her slightly crooked nose) was made up to look almost EXACTLY like me (complete with then-strawberry-blonde hair and freckles). When I walked down the street in NYC - I saw people doing a "double-take" - since the huge billboards displayed her image, everywhere. Freaky! *chortle*
@paulsreay1 ~ Ohhhh, you guys are just too much ! *pleased grin, cheeks turning red all the way up to my Genesis-loving ears!* (Thanks for calling me an "angel", Paulsreay...it makes me *sigh* with happiness that someone thinks of me, so....)
