Campbell is saying that to know all this we have to live it, and experience it, on a much larger scale than is available to us in this one lifetime. So why is he trying to make silk purses out of sow's ears? Why is he trying to plant the seeds of unripe fruit?
@wizard85 the word to use is consciousness. Far bigger than god, and the concept is far bigger than the notion of god. It contains all the subsets of our experiences and the experiences of that which we would like to "believe" doesn't have consciousness.

There are a lot of fundamental wrong assumptions made here. E.g. why would the absence of freedom of choice prohibit learning and growth? Machines can learn and they are not free. Since we are still working at understanding the physical I think it is a bit premature to assume what we do not understand yet has to be metaphysical. Thomas Campbell needs to read the book Get Me Adjusted.

He ties them into not only explaining God and Satan, but into politics, racial behavior, and modern political economical problems. If you like Campbell, you'll love the new guy.
