Loreena sings from the far reachs of her soul. You can't help but be moved and drawn into her world when you hear her music. I saw her in Chicago 12 yrs ago.....best concert I ever witnessed. Her lyrics seem to bless you as they wash over you. Thank you Loreena. Your music has gotten me thru some rough times in my life and I am greatful!
oh, gosh. this is such a passionate song. it's even more depressing if you know what happened to her husband; whom she loved dearly like lovers in this song.
@galidune , it's a translation from the Spanish poem "Noche oscura del alma", by Juan de la Cruz. I suppose that this is the common accepted translation in English.
Beautiful! Love most of the images, they're stunning! My only complaint is that some moved around too fast (the beating heart and pulsing stars took away from the song) and the skeletons were too creepy; what do they have to do with love?? Love is life, not death.
@whitespirit26 not all share the same veiw that love is not death, after all we can still love something that has passed from this world and entered that which belongs to Hades, sometimes death can make you love what you have by so much, so yes Love is Life, but you can also find it in death, unfortunately xx
Well, gosh, thank you Jaxazon, I certainly pray that is true. TO please God/Jesus, and yes, I believe in the Holy Trinity, 3 separate but 3 are one, Father ,Son and Holy Spirit.
I think age and prob the dark night have purged some silliness out of me, I just watched this vid and I don't think I watched the whole thing before or watched in small version, where you don't see as much,
It is certainly a love or mushy vid like Mald is saying, although there are some very lovely art/pixs.
The only thing deep might be your wedgie. Catholics have been known to hide their fleshly desires all in the name of hypocrisy. Maybe the friar wrote the poem about some underaged boy and then explained it as something else just to look pious in the eyes of his congregation. Heck, if he had been a protestant, maybe it would be about the love between him and his so-called god; but it would have been inspired by a sick desire to be penetrated by his god. Actually, Catholics also fetishize god.
Read the book before you go judging, he wrote the book in the 15th century and while in prison.
You know not what u speak of , I don't know who u mean by "they" but if there be any silliness or ignorance left in me it is from myself not others. and certainly not the experience of the Dark Night of the Soul, I know u cannot understand, most Christians I know can't understand it. There are two different dark nights of the soul, one is common but difficult. the second is rare and I wish it none.
brava loreena, wanderful song from st john of cross tath imagine a meeting of 2 lovers in a night but there are no a man and a woman but him and Jesus only in spritual sense of course,Jesus in fact is our deceives and refused broom,Jesus forgive us.
The "Dark Night of the Soul" by St John of the Cross is a book written by a 15th century Priest,
The book is about a rare spiritual "journey" some Christians go through. I don't know how any one could really understand it unless they have gone through it. It is a beautiful book no less and yes, he wrote a poem that sounds romantic, like lovers but it is not.
I believe 52b17 means Jesus is our hearts desire, to be close to him, ? refused broom, don't understand that.
Beautiful song and video. There is no mistaking that the writer has been inspired and used phrases from St John's poem but she has added some original lyrics and lovely interpretations to it as well. I read the BK 4yrs ago & must now re read, the translation I have is by E.Allison Peers. I reccommend it to all on that spiritual journey. And may all reach that happy night.
For you religious "people" this might be a "deep" and holy song with lots of meaning about jesus and stuff...but non religious people prefer to see it as a mushy love song instead of some deep religious bs.
This is certainly a love/mushy video, Mald, had I not read the real book and poem first I would see no Spiritual in this video except God is the creater of love and beauty and love between husband and wife is honored by God.
The song is very beautiful, and I think you did a video that goes well with it, but as I revisit this I don't believe the singer should have lifted the title from St. John of the Cross, "Dark Night of the Soul" she more appropiately could have used night of my love.
I agree the original poem by St John of the Cross is intensly deep, had I not experienced the dark night and read the book I would not have deciphered the spiritualilty of it even though I feel I have pretty good discernment.
I am still partially in that DN,I don't know if I will ever make it out in this lifetime, but I have never lost my faith in God or Jesus CHrist. And to spend eternity with Him is worth anything I could go through.God bless U!!
in this poem st john (was a friar)says about the dark night, that is the period when seems that the loved person escapes,in this case Jesus, mother teresa for a lot of years don't felt no more,st john says of Jesus as his brooom, met in the night and after lost, really Jesus married us and died for our love, really this is our refused broom,I don't know well english and I dont know if loreena says really so,but the poem is this one,buy it,it is wonderful.
Christians? WTF are you talking about? St. John of the Cross was a CATHOLIC; and as we ALL know, Catholics are idol worshippers, while Christians are Christ worshippers. In any case, the carnal love is a less disgusting idea than whatever Mr. Catholic friar might have meant for it to be.
U R SO SILLY!!!!!!!!!!! Gibberish is what U speak, even though, I love you cos Jesus does and I pray you have a Happy new Yr and find the LOVE of Jesus Christ SOON! GOD BLESS,
gay, he he, I am 52 f married 24yrs to a real man, wonderful Christian,I am so blessed!!!

The term and metaphysicality of the phrase "dark night of the soul" are taken from the writings of the Spanish poet and Roman Catholic mystic Saint John of the Cross, a Carmelite priest in the 16th century. Dark Night of the Soul is the name of both a poem, and a commentary on that poem, and are among the Carmelite priest's most famous writings. They tell of his mystic development and the stages he went through on his quest for holiness.

Good summary pbs. You have some sense and you make sense when you write - both pleasing to God, I am sure.
In my opinion, the song is a lot deeper than this silly video. And that is a drastic understatement.
