You should really put your pH meter in distilled water. At least for a day or two, but I pretty much keep them standing in water forever. That way the sensor doesn't dry out. Also, you should keep them in the same room you do your mixing in - it takes out the temperature issue. That way you get immediate, rock steady readouts. You should also callibrate your meters.

To me, the cheaper the better. When you can get two for the price of one, you are never without a backup.
I bought mine for 30 euros on Ebay - chinese, but very good. Temperature, and two digits after the period. I've had it for a year now and it is very steady. It is simply called a "Pen Type pH Meter", and comes in blue plastic case. Works like a charm.
Hi, I guess so, but I'm not a chemist. And callibration fluid is cheap enough to buy, even more so outside of growshops. I'm sure lots of people use pH and EC/PPM meters.
Also, you should always pour callibration fluid into a separate container, so there is no contamination.

I'm planing some no power systems (wick and floating tray) for outdoors this spring. And for indoors a three level system, ebb and flow on the top two, and a DWC in the rez.

@tigerone1970 could you make your own buffer solution using chemicals and pH strips to make them the propper pH and then calibrate you pH meter ?
