@DudemanClide yes for a boxed in map fps, like quake, like Doom, like unreal etc. Tribes was one of the first fully immersivet team battle based FPS with buildings, vehicles, deployables etc. The CTF was unmatched once jump skiing was discovered. It innovated so much of what people take for granted in many titles today. Yet none of them utilize jetpacks and jump skiing like Tribes.

that cloak of night heavy back cap was pretty cool. i got the inspration to try it out and was able to get rocket-mined all the way back to the flag on a single jet (without having to ski). pretty good feeling.

Practice. People would practice flag runs constantly in public games or make their own games and just do it solo. It became second nature to do a heavy flag run with skiing and without stopping.

Wip3ou7...thanks for the memories! Tribes is my all-time favorite computer game; and I've been playing computer games since 1972! What they did with Tribes: Vengeance was a crying shame and killed an awesome franchise! I used to run the Rumble Clan (as Devildog74) running our own server using a custom Tribes 2 Meltdown mod tweaked by Mr.Keen for us. When T:V came out, we tried to make some good mods but...Vivendi's coders made it impossible to do *sigh*. Anyhow, thanks for the memories.

The Heavy flying on Rollercoaster is NOT a mod...it's sLaM's famous heavy cap that actually happened in a match between The Sticks and NuTz, which makes it all the more impressive: the fact that it happened during competitive play.

Tribes defined the FPS multiplayer genre for me. Unfortunately, it defined it so well that I haven't found anything that has filled its void. I look at games like Halo 3 and cringe at how slow it seems to me. I'm glad to see that people still tout the virtues of this great game.

If you get the whole jump ski concept down you can go damn fast. But just be aware most of the guys from the old T1 days had highly scripted configs of the game. For example base Tribes 1 did not have easy skiing like T2 or TV.

cont.. There were scripts and exe's to make jump skiing in T1 similiar to what it is today in games like T2 or TV. Also in those days if you had ISDN or better you were Godly if you were on a pub with a bunch of modem players. The scene of the Heavy flying is probably more a mod, but a lot of people were that good.
