  • I think I wouldn't have so much difficulties to learn Greek because I'm a native French speaker and a lot of French words come from Greek (and Latin). ^^

  • I am married to a beautiful Greek lady. I remembered when I first met her family I thought her mother was always angry. I knew enough Greek at that time to speak but of course it was street Greek. This was the time when I needed polite Greek (lol). She always was loud and animated when she spoke but I soon came to realize this was normal (lol). Her father on the other hand was just the opposite, soft, easy, no worries (just like me). We got along great.

  • Polite Greek. Best way to learn Greek. Use it when speaking to strangers, to show respect, speaking at a formal occassion, or you wish to be extra nice. It's a softer, calmer way of speaking Greek. Other wise, colloquial/street Greek is used most of the time, especially among families and friends. This type of Greek is loud, lots of yelling rough, boisterous, sometimes confrontational, etc. Greek is like any other language, there's the polite and the not too polite way of speaking it.

  • Mr Butcher!!! LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

That made me laugh sooooooo much! It is funnily but understandably simplified for the reasons of learning.

  • ...survival greek, the rough guide

  • @MrDeathPainter My Brother in law was a meat market barker in Pireaus. He looked and sounded nothing like this! He was loud, IN YOUR FACE with a big chunk of meat in his hand, and obnoxious! Instead of this pleasant converstation, it would go something like, "You gotta buy this meat, it's organic, it's to your advantage to buy my meat, no hormones!"

  • @MrDeathPainter Yes, you are very correct! I know how crude they can be! I mentioned to some Greek people I met at the airport that the guy doing security was liking the young lady in line. The Greeks got a kick out of my correctness. "Tou aresi auti" Who says it that way!

  • Does anyone know the name of the background song? It's nice..!

I love these videos even though they speak much slower than real life and they're kinda cheesy but Greek ppl are so beautiful! <3

  • "Never on a Sunday"

  • @nivramstob And who sings it?

  • Put the number below in the search box on you-tube.

The most famous singer of this song was Melina Mercouri, but this link is one of my favorite modern versions.

  • I'm not sure I would put any cheese factor on these videos. Yes, they do speak more slowly (Thank God) than normal, but that's the point, to learn what they are saying slowly so one can understand faster. I have taken Modern Greek Lessons on and off for 25 years, and I have not seen anything close to this in quality and effectiveness besides private lessons. My Greek is at an intermediate level, almost to where I can follow fast conversations. I wish I had these years ago!

  • lol

    That's wonderful!

What made you want to learn modern Greek in the first place? Did you have a specific purpose?

How difficult is modern Greek (speaking, reading and writing) compared to other Indo-European languages?

  • I can't say how it compares to other Indo-European languages, but without being in Greece it is plenty difficult. I took Spanish in High School, which seems rather easy compared to Greek. The Greek Alphabet not using latin letters is difficult in itself. In America we have a saying, "It's all Greek to me", when something is difficult, and the Greeks say amongst themselves, "It's all Chinese to me". I have a student worker helping me from China who tells me they simply say it is difficult!

  • this song is called "ta pedia tou pirea" and it was a soundtrack of an old classic greek movie called "never on sunday"

  • These are the most amazing Modern Greek video lessons I have ever viewed! What's most impressive is the outstanding quality! This is so NOT-Typical of my memories of Greeks in Athens. It makes me want to go back to Greece! My Brother in law was a meat market Barker, and would shove chunks of meat in your face demanding you buy it, with a cigarette in his mouth, bare hands, covered in blood and flies everywhere!

This almost looks like the market in Pireaus, but surely not!

  • I love these videos xd

  • lol Me too!

  • thanx I love Nicko and Anna, Im improving my Greek=]

  • @QueensPrincess08 u are a fob
