This is the kind of episode that proves that raw talent and creativity can easily falter beneath raw talent, creativity and the experience to back it up. :)
I disagree entirely. I'll grant that the challenger was very creative, but his execution was sloppy and heavy handed. Sakai had the experience to focus on the minute details to make every dish taste elegant and harmonious. That is why he's the iron chef and thats why they win all the time
I have to say that Sakai is so kind and funny, and some of the challengers who come to him seem a bit prideful. To be honest Sakai's method of making quality well-balanced dishes is what keeps him on the throne. Some of the challengers are just show offs and you can see really take the burn during the tasting.
Ah! 4:26 - I've been waiting to find that quote again! My dad and I watched this like 10 years ago and laughed for an hour about "made my fish eggs dreams come true!"
it really depends, if you are used to eating salty food then you might learn to pick out the overtones, for instance, there are all sorts of aromas in caviar. If you don't like caviar then it's probably fair to say that you don't like any of the fish roes?
Yeah, the challenger is a bit too... proud. The challenger didn't really do much with the caviar, as far as being creative. It's either just a topping/sauce (like with the scallop dish), or just a topping/garnish.
I think a key to this battle was the fact that the challenger really only used caviar in sauces and as garnishes while Sakai used the caviar more in the main dishes
Caviar is salty but not as salty as say.. a green olive. It is very delicate and delicious. The key is blending it with other things to heighten the taste. Sakai understood that perfectly as nearly every dish of his did this. Sakai was on his A game for this one.
generally yes. If metal is used then it should be a more non-reactive metal (gold is a good example) so that it doesn't alter the taste of the caviar, but in this case I don't suppose it really matters since most of the caviar was part of a whole rather than being consumed on its own.

I laugh at how the challenger thinks every comment is a compliment minus the overcooked rockfish comment. What a cocky idiot.

Kishi's always talking about "flavor for adult taste" or "food for grown ups" ... I kinda like that :P

the challenger was critiqued more than sakai. :)
it was painfully obvious, i mean, looking at their food, i would've chose sakai in a heartbeat :)

I remember this episode. Sakai won the battle, leaving a bad taste in Club Mistral's mouth and wanted revenge!

I hate watching this show cause the Iron Chef keeps winning, obvious they are biased towards them.....

some 1 correct me if im wrong but if the cavier comes into contact withs so much metal wont the metal impart a metalic taste?

generally yes. If metal is used then it should be a more non-reactive metal (gold is a good example) so that it doesn't alter the taste of the caviar, but in this case I don't suppose it really matters since most of the caviar was part of a whole rather than being consumed on its own.
