Anyway, I was in Scotland last month for 2 weeks, and the team I went with had a boy named "Peter" in it. I was noticing the T's in Scotland. See, there was also a boy named Peter in one of the churches we were at, & I noticed that as we Americans say it more like "Pee-der", they say a hard T. I was in Burntisland; does it depend on where you are in Scotland on how they say their T's?
I'm so surprised to see that you pronounce the letter T at the end just we do in spanish!!!! and your R sound in the first video is so much similar to our R in spanish !!!!
i love the part where u cleared your throat! lol. these videos of learning the scottish accent are fun. i live in northeastern america. i'm trying the scottish accent. not doing to well, but i'm trying! lol. you're awesome! :)
that dropping of the "t" and the sort of sound that replaces it is called a glottal stop : ) we studied that in the phonetics class, it was funny to listen to my colleagues struggling with it, hi-hi-hi
Wha part of Alban are ye from? Laird you are numpty ladd... Nye, really I've the upmost appriciation fer ye tryin to teach these American bastards somethin they could use.. I do get tired of the whole " I love your accent," shite... Cheers to ye... I am from Elgin... Live now in Oregon, USA... Keep it up mate...
I enjoyed video lesson 3 because you had an american accent in comparison with a scottish accent. It would of been great if you could repeat the words a few times. Also, I agree with Peachesandsushi. Relax. I need to see your mouth when you pronounce the words. All in All, you sound great.
Hey, Susan! if you have to see things twice, there's a great feature called replay, which you actually may use as often as you like. Perhaps that's for not being boring other people, who take less time learning "their" scottish. I've actually seen it thrice an I laughed my butt off - then I saw, how stupid that looks and laughed it on again.
Love watching these videos, mostly because now I can finally see the Scottish influence on my Texas accent. We also leave out our Ts, and most of our Rs also get rolled. Yay for this area being settled by Scotsmen! =)
uh your so lucky to have a scottish accent. i love british accents to im canadian which is basically the same as american, i here that they are slightly different. But anyways having a plain canadian accent( if you can even call it that) is extremely boring.
acually we dont replace the T completely.... if the word starts with a T like... Truck or Tincker... we still pronounce it... jsut for people who are very dumb and are going soemthing like... UGH-uck and UGH -incker lol.... plus in all generalness , i dont curl my T's, it depends where u live, so this video will only suit u if your going to the nothern parts... but the slang is still the same mostly...
Love learning to emulating your Scottish accent. however, you do come across as a 'wee' bit abrasive. Take a few steps back from the camera, and relax a bit. Although we live in other countries you don't have to shout through the microphone to be heard. But I'll watch the shows nevertheless, just felt compelled to give a little bit of constructive criticism, please don't take personal offense to this. :)
This site has so many hits per day, I don't know if the people who click this do this for an insight into our dialect, or, alternatively, to laugh at you (like myself)
Hopefully it is to laugh at you, but what a terrible example you are for our country. Really, without trying to disrespect you. But pleae, quit the videos!
I'm going through your lessons one by one now, and the more I find out, the more I am confused. "It's not socke'h, it's socke'h"... Uh... My ears didn't detect any difference.
lol! amazing how i'v been saying it like that all my life! my parents have been trying to get me to pronounce the t's the "english way" or posh scottish as you said. my brain ignores the t's though.
Hmmm. First of all, have your mouth slightly open, your teeth just open enough for you to be able to bite the tip of one of your fingers. Then place the tip of your tongue slightly below the roof of your mouth, just behind your top front teeth. Then blow out air as powerfully as you can, with your tongue and teeth in that position. The tip of your tongue should 'vibrate'. If it doesn't work, adjust the position of your tongue and jaws very slightly until you find the right position.
HAHA in the beginning of the video, you sound like Captain Barbossa XD LOL kay after watching 4 of your videos, im definetly subscribing ! I would love to perfect the Scottish accent =D

Oh, and by the way, the sound you're replacing the 't' with is known as a hiatus.
