I don't dispute anything Professor Zinn says. What I do dispute is his thesis. What socialists such as Chomsky and Finkelstein do is decribe data points in very great detail without actually showing you the entire curve or trend line. What great leaders have always understood is what it takes to establish a stable society which benefits people in the long run. To do this you need knowledge of the empircal data of 5000 yrs of history. Unfortunately the immediate human cost is always terrible.

In this sense, soldier meaning someone who will fight for a cause, in forehand knowing he/she could die for it.Its not okay when soldiers are used in any other purpose than protecting his/her own society.
@Oxa1 that becomes a difficult definition. What is protecting his/her own society? Does preemtive war such as the Bush doctrine constitute self defence or is merely protecting yourselves from an actual invasion count as protection? I believe that no nation has the right to invade, coerce, bribe, extort, intimidate, harass, etc. another nation and if that is followed than wars can become a thing of the past as they should have become already.
@Braindrain3 What is wrong with coercion. Look at Coercive Diplomacy since the Second World War, many nations have used coercion in a non-violent means or as `limited war` which is described as `surgical`. Killing is bad, but if you could take out Hitler personally, like the US has tried with Saddams Baathist extermination squads is this killing not honourable? War doesnt need to be "industrial" or "attrition", if it is surgical, like many sub-state wars with modern technology. Means and ends.
American Revolution - not a revolution. Anyone that has studied revolutions knows this fact. Just because it is called a revolution does not mean it was a revolution. People once thought the earth was flat.
Civil War - ends 1865, slavery abolished, and 1877 we see it re-established. The Civil War was about the right of states to leave the Union.
2 aGothicStory:In this day & age, I'm leery of buying anything since my purchasing power is a vote of support. There are definitely ways 2 get around purchasing, but Zinn really doesn't arouse my interest enough to spend 2 much time (another hot commodity) checking his references.I feel like he would've appealed 2 me more in my rebellious high school yrs. @jstef928 What world are you living in. I am no facist. I have no problem with someone having a different way of thinking. I just think someone who constantly bashes this country and says nothing good about it yet enjoys all it's freedom is a hypocrite. My uncle fought in WW2 and is buried in Normandie. He fought and died for people to have their freedom. He is my hero. He didn't fight and die so somone can sit on their fat ass and put down this country mercilessly.
First of all, its not the country he's bashing, its the government. Read his book, he states that a country is not defined by its government, its defined by its ideals. He has lots of good things to say about the ideals of America's people, and the spirit of working throughout our history. So he does say good things about it.
But when there are threats to those freedoms, or really bad things about the way our country is going, why would you not speak out and raise you voice?
@southbronxkid He's defending and giving credit to ppl like your uncle. And taking the glory from the war mongers that start these conflicts. You should learn that criticism of our government is not a attack on our country.
I love Howard Zinn. God Bless you. Thank you for everything. Thank you for showing that History does not belong to the higher ups. It is A PEOPLE'S History
He was my favorite writer. I read a peoples history of the U.S. when i was 12, and have watched CSPAN ever since. I feel bad. I didnt know he died until today. Hats off to you Mr. Zinn... You inspired me and many others!!! This beer is for you bud!
but the rich ones of the world, they are those that gave(lent ) the government of Ronald Reagans, 1.5 trillones of dollars for purchase of arms (guns)and technology for the war, this money comes of the called evil state bank of the federal reserve that is property of the family rothschild through its mandators. bu they do not want to that is known. PLEASE WAKE UP.
Mr Zinn says "yeah, we defeated Hitler", like it was nothing to do so. He says we could have done this without war. How? Ask Hitler to stop the war please!! Are you kidding mel! He goes on and on about it could have been done without war but gives no examples. Typical case of liberalism being a mental disorder
'Typical case of liberalism being a mental disorder', that is prob one of the stupiudest comments ive seen on youtube. Can you elaborate?
Because in the US what they call 'Conservatives' (so Republicans I guess) are more Liberal than anyone else. Well in the original meaning of that concept anyway.
@xdeliriumx1 Yes, extreme liberalism is a mental disorder - they don't see reality when it's in front of their face. He only saw the negative, not the good in the country yet he lived here and enjoyed all it's freedoms. Very hipocritial.. If he hated it so much why didn't he get the hell out.. HIs passivity doens't work in the real world. A bully only responds to force. If someone hurt someone he loved would he think of a thousand ways to deal with it. Yes liberalism is a mental disorder.
@southbronxkid very facist way of thinking. people who think opposite of you are not simply in disagreement but are less than human. that's how genocide happens.
Sir, were you in World War 2? No you were not. Howard Zinn has the right to talk about the matter specifically because he fought in World War 2. He won medals. Yet out of the war he came out as a pacifist.
What happened after the great evil Hitler and the ideology of Nazism was gone? Did the world suddenly live in peace? No, then you had the Cold War which reshaped the planet. After Cold War, it's the war on Islamic Jihad. On and on.
Utopia Mr. Zinn, there is none. . If we followed your thinking, we would still be under British rule or Germany/Japan's rule - we would have no country at all. In your class distinction tirade about the Revoultionary War, you conveniently left out that the The Declaration of Independence was signed by what you would call "rich people" who were putting their lives on the line by signing it. It was their death sentence if the British won.
Many of their lives along with the poor were taken
He makes a slight error in his discussions of the Revolutionary War and the American Civil War by focusing on the MILITARY losses. While civilian deaths are much mroe difficult to count, they must be added to the tally as well.
I admire Zinn so much for his criticism of his own nation. Its very difficult for one to confront the crimes of one's own group wholeheartedly, but its absolutely essential to admit our own wrongs to advance as a nation and species. We must demolish our own myths and look critically at all the stories we've been spoon-fed. The abolition of this cancer that is (militarist) nationalism is a precondition for the survival of humanity on earth. FACE THE TRUTH! THEN MAKE IT BETTER!
tired o f hearing what we did wrong?see, hear no evil? Those who fail to remember the past are domed to repeat it. quote was said by someone unknown to me.STOP THE BRAIN WASHING ALREADY.i WANT TRUTH! DON'T YOU?
the truth is a not that completely clear, it can be spun, Zinn had his spin. Making that winning against the British to as a result the indians were persecuted is not truth. Its spin. Everyone even Zinn's teachings needs to be questioned.
and patriotism is not allways bad, America is not allways bad, matter of a fact better than most superpowers in history, that he could have mentioned.
@terrablader That's exactly what happened after the Revolutionary War. Soldiers were rewarded with Indian land, and they pushed the Indians off. My home town in east Tennesse was founded by some of those Revolutionary soldiers. It's not something Zinn made up.
Indian genocide was not a direct result of winning the revolutionary war, England would have pushed out the Indians too should they have kept North that was just progress, good or bad. You have to disconect yourself from the message to evaluate it.
Zinn didn't say Indian genocide was a direct result of the war. He said that the revolutionaries abolished the British treaty line and took over the western territory, which is what happened.
If you believe the Declaration of Independence, the British government was regulating population growth in the colonies. The Revolution did away with that too.
You're blaming Zinn because you didn't listen carefully.
what is was , was a nomadic people versus aggerian, its has been the same story all over the world, its tragic yes. But its not due to the revolutionary war...
I was hoping to have something uplifting to say but after finding scorzeny45's comment I had to resond and in a way keep on the Zinn tradition of presenting information that may be helpful to future. But for fans of Zinn or freedom or justice or equality scorzeny45 comes off as a coward attacking a dead man before his grave is cold. R.I.P. Howard Zinn
I would like to point out that scorzeny45's comments show a willful ignorance and racism that must be rejected if we the human race are to live together peacefully. Suggesting undesirable political actions have a genetic basis goes beyond the point of just a joke, and steps into the realm of something akin to nazi propaganda.
let me just say that scorzeny45 is an obvious racist and a 1 dimensional political idealogue

amazing, during the beginning of world war 2,the leftwing crowd didnt want AMERICA to get involved, than hitler invades russia and suddenly the leftist want america to send her sons to fight hitler,go figure. yeah,i know this jew was a veteran[draft was on] so was scum like william kunstler etc. why didnt this self hating american just denounce his citizenship? ALSO,what is it with jews? is it in thier d.n.a to hate thier own country, they make me sick. This creep used the g.i bill for college.
He was a democrat at first but then he and some other people were beaten by police while protesting "Hitlerism" and urging the world to fight Fascism.
He then joined the war effort and met a gunner who argued with him about politics and told him that the war was an Imperialistic one. All wereEmpires trying to get more influence over the world.
After the war Zinn became an Anarchist and rejected the Soviet style of Socialism as inhumane and Fascistic.
people like you are so ignorant and so proud to be an American you fail to properly study history and develop any intelligent skepticism, fail to really interpret history for what it is, you are a pathetic coward my friend to denounce a hero like Howard Zinn, what have you accomplished in your life? It's one thing to be critical and question, another thing to be blatantly anti-semitic, ignorant, and discard the truth. Ignorant, scared, sheep-like cowards like you MAKE ME SICK.
Clearly you must get all your info from FoxNews and cable. Here is a thought...instead of dumbing yourself further with your American bs cable how about you open 'a book' why dont you READ some Zinn, Chomsky and Parenti and then 'critique' their work. I can assure you their assertions are sourced properly and verified and I would be more than happy to debate you on any issue.
Zinn's passing saddens me deeply he was an incredible humanitarian, activist and historian. ~ RIP Zinn ~
Have you even bothered reading a Peoples History of the United States? Do you even know how many natives were slaughtered and annihilated due to white settlement?? Do you have a clue as to WHY the US was pro-hitler initially and that the US joined the war at the 11th hour?? The US had information about the concentration camps and knew that millions were being exterminated but it suited their geopolitical aims to keep out. So pls spare me your deluded bravado and learn some history
You have the mentality and intellect of a 5 yr old retarded kid.
Why dont you read some real history and get your facts straight before you spew your nonsense?
Howard Zinn was an incredible historian and activist just as Chomsky and Parenti are. If you bothered to read their work you would see that the truth is anything but the right wing delusions you have acquired from 'FoxNews'.
ISAhub - while your intent is honorable, hi have a 6 year old retarded child who is quite intelligent, and knows good when she sees it. I take offense. Please don't bring down the developmentally disabled with these kind of comments. Thank you. RIP Howard Zinn.
I just learned of howard zinn tonight for the first time, as I watched this it dawned on me that if Jesus has leaders in his "army" This man must have certainly always been standing somewhere by his side.

No, of course not! But sometimes they become neccessary. History proves that.
He mentions the Korean war...the REALITY there today is like night and day.
Read about North K sometimes.
You would be living under a Nazi/Axis Power tyranny right now if we did not go to war in WWII. And MILLIONS MORE Americans (and Jews) would have died...maybe even your parents!
In Zinn's fantasy world, "things" just "work out" an evryone plays nice and we all just got along.
History is written by the victors. Their history proves what they want. Clearly you don't know or understand history and even worse....you think you do. Ignorance is bliss.
How about Vietnam? A war to end the Red Chinese communist threat! Millions killed. Billions spent. Millions of families destroyed permanently...FOR WHAT? So we could lose and Red China could end up our biggest creditor.
Turn off Faux News and open a book. I suggest Zinn's "A People's History of the US."
@ CHARESTHEHAMER clearly you've missed something. Dr Zinn's versions of history are not the "facts" written in American text books are they? Why? Because the approved version of American History is what they are teaching, the version written by the victors and the version they want believed.
You should take your own advice. The fact that you need to use misogynistic terms to make you baseless point proves the weakness of your arguement and your mind. Zinn's book is NOT used across the country as a basic text and you know it. That is an outright lie.
@jerseygrl5 Indeed. And after the Pentagon Papers were released, the myths of Vietnam War were exposed. The reason of "staying" in Vietnam and trying to win the war instead of pulling out early was not because of the threat of the domino effect, the main reason was to "avoid an American humiliation," with the second distant reason being to prevent Chinese influence in Vietnam.
They barely teach that though in America. It was in the NY Times, everywhere, but people forgot the Pentagon papers
Speak you Mind, even when your voice is trembling. That's the true essence of what Howard Zinn meant and means to the discussion of human rights and political misuse of power. Not irony that he passes away following the Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday holiday... Thank you and RIP Mr. Zinn.
let's leave our baggage at the door, start to get along, stop killing each other for any reason, obama has killed more than bush in his first year, wtf ! all these religions have more in common than differences: love, compassion, where did all that go? change yourself first
I recomend anyone else feeling so threatened by isalm as this coward ignorant omcorc is to PM me ask me anythign you like debate me in anythign or check otu my channel and see some of my videos or skip all of htat take the time out of your day when possible and watch this series called the arrivals to understand what it is we are resisting against and fighting for in our own words not our ignorant enemies.
He does not sound like a tough grizzled old soldier but some kind of dandified Nancy boy, who is afraid of wars and he is indubitably no sea-dog but the sort of pasty landlubber I have always despised. I'll warrant, the most exciting thing that has happened to this limpid prawn in a whole year, was the day when he forgot to put sugar in his porridge!
I have read many Civil Rights & Civil War books & know about John Brown who played a major role in starting the Civil War... Great movie about struggle in Queen with Halle Berry the paternal side of Roots... Man goes off to war leaves his family home to work in the fields quite fitting for what they did but they didnt like it one bit! Lived in different class systems since a kid.. Middle Upper to Lower Middle to Middle to Lower I know & People Wake Up They Really Dont Care About Us! Peace.

He didn't fight and die so somone can sit on their fat ass and put down this country mercilessly.
southbronxkid 1 year ago
First of all, its not the country he's bashing, its the government. Read his book, he states that a country is not defined by its government, its defined by its ideals. He has lots of good things to say about the ideals of America's people, and the spirit of working throughout our history. So he does say good things about it.
But when there are threats to those freedoms, or really bad things about the way our country is going, why would you not speak out and raise you voice?

I'd love to see this guy's sources. Not all the founders were rich. Washington was asked to lead, because people believed in him.
Note that his arguments are against the wars of the US. What about the wars of other countries?
Let's see some proof. There are plenty of books that rewrite history, but have no sources to back it up. Yes, question everything, but back it up.

southbronxkid 1 year ago
'Typical case of liberalism being a mental disorder', that is prob one of the stupiudest comments ive seen on youtube. Can you elaborate?
Because in the US what they call 'Conservatives' (so Republicans I guess) are more Liberal than anyone else. Well in the original meaning of that concept anyway.
You apprently have the mental disorder.
xdeliriumx1 1 year ago
@xdeliriumx1 Yes, extreme liberalism is a mental disorder - they don't see reality when it's in front of their face. He only saw the negative, not the good in the country yet he lived here and enjoyed all it's freedoms. Very hipocritial.. If he hated it so much why didn't he get the hell out.. HIs passivity doens't work in the real world. A bully only responds to force. If someone hurt someone he loved would he think of a thousand ways to deal with it. Yes liberalism is a mental disorder.

On and on.
andyx1205 1 year ago 3
Many of their lives along with the poor were taken
southbronxkid 1 year ago

@terrablader That's exactly what happened after the Revolutionary War. Soldiers were rewarded with Indian land, and they pushed the Indians off. My home town in east Tennesse was founded by some of those Revolutionary soldiers. It's not something Zinn made up.
jxhensley 1 year ago
Indian genocide was not a direct result of winning the revolutionary war, England would have pushed out the Indians too should they have kept North that was just progress, good or bad. You have to disconect yourself from the message to evaluate it.
terrablader 1 year ago
Zinn didn't say Indian genocide was a direct result of the war. He said that the revolutionaries abolished the British treaty line and took over the western territory, which is what happened.
If you believe the Declaration of Independence, the British government was regulating population growth in the colonies. The Revolution did away with that too.
You're blaming Zinn because you didn't listen carefully.

Do you know why Zinn became a Communist?
He was a democrat at first but then he and some other people were beaten by police while protesting "Hitlerism" and urging the world to fight Fascism.
He then joined the war effort and met a gunner who argued with him about politics and told him that the war was an Imperialistic one. All wereEmpires trying to get more influence over the world.
After the war Zinn became an Anarchist and rejected the Soviet style of Socialism as inhumane and Fascistic.

Yes, we get that wars are bad, people die, and profit from wars. Ever since the dawn of history this has been true.
But in Howard's fantasyland we would:
-ALL be living under Britain's boot for decades if not centuries (a la Canada)
-ALL be living with slavery in the south and it's human misery and pain.
-ALL be living under Nazi/Japanese oppression and CONTROL with untold millions of dead Americans!
Sometimes the smartest guys are also the dumbest.

CHARESTHEHAMER 2 years ago
@jerseygrl5 Indeed. And after the Pentagon Papers were released, the myths of Vietnam War were exposed. The reason of "staying" in Vietnam and trying to win the war instead of pulling out early was not because of the threat of the domino effect, the main reason was to "avoid an American humiliation," with the second distant reason being to prevent Chinese influence in Vietnam.
They barely teach that though in America. It was in the NY Times, everywhere, but people forgot the Pentagon papers
