It is true that a lot of Cossacks fought in the WW2 as an ally to Third Reich, BUT they fought NOT for Russia! They fought for their own country, for being a separate and sovereign nation. Cossack nationalists never consider themselves any part of the Russian people. The Nazi Germany promised them some kind of independence (under German protectorate), and Germans recognised Cossacks not as a part of Russian nation but as a separate ethnic group which was related to the ancient Germanic tribes.

It was only natural for the Cossacks to side with the Wehrmacht. Both possessed the true Warrior Spirit ! and Stalin badly abused the Cossacks too, so they wanted payback ! They were used to a fair amount of self determination and freedom under the Czar in exchange for their military service, and Stalin did all he could to crush independent minded people, and of course the Cossacks objected to this !

Great Cossacks brave and strong true to their cossack heritage is sad that most of this men were hand over by the corrupt West to the Soviet Union and excecuted or send to gulags many allied soldiers that forced this cossacks to go to the soviet side even hear the shoots of the ones being executed

Most Ukrainian Zaporozhian Cossacks were Kuban Cosacks by the late 1860s . They had in any case their own laws and traditions unlike Russians and Ukrainians and most likely even though related to both were originally ethically different
