I was hoping that the moral crackdown following 'Sachsgate' might actually have encouraged some comics to sharpen up a bit and not be so lazy sometimes.
Rather than just dropping in a line about cancer or peodophilia, or dropping in the c word for an easy shock laugh, why not stretch yourself and try to go back to a good old sharp, witty joke?
@fodsaks because as a form of mental release stand up comedy, in the UK in particular, is intrinsically linked to the discussion and furthermore rejection of stigma attached to taboo subjects and topics. The ability to startle and cross accepted boundaries is a large part of its lasting appeal and continuing innovation.
@fodsaks Have a look at what comedy audiences tend to enjoy before you classify the term "funny." I've been to a "clean" christian comedy festival, because it was near my home, and after two acts I wanted to stop breathing.
@rainfallshard Well, I'd be FAIRLY sure that comedy audiences like funny jokes.
As for your Christian festival, I'm sure there are as many poor 'family' comedians as 'edgy' ones.
I've been to many comedy nights above countless pubs, where act after act has come on, sworn his head off, tried to get us all gasping in shock at jokes about illness, death, religion, etc, and barely raised a polite chuckle.
I'm not trying to clean up comedy, I'd just like the wit to come back in some quarters.
@fodsaks You seem to think that there is a very strict distinction between shock value and wit. Frankie Boyle is a great subject for that. He is a very witty man, and some of what he says is out of the normal taste. Maybe your problem is you're looking in all the wrong places for decent comedy? (Or maybe you just don't have a very wide sense of humour.)
I thought it was ridiculous that the papers said that it was an obscene disgusting horrible thing they did by humiliating Andrew Sachs (which ok yeah it kind of was) and broadcasting it on air, but then they went and told the whole fucking country I mean whos the twats there? How could they not see the hippocracy of what they were doing?
@tufty1990 Exactly. 1 Million people heard it at the time, yet so many people got angry. Because it was re-broadcast on every radio station, in every newspaper and on every news network. Repeatedly.
I don't think it was a great idea from them but all the fuss was over the top.Maybe say sorry to him but keep their jobs.I think their both quite funny and the joke wasn't offensive but a bit mean to the old guy,hes been through enough humiliation.
Personally I think prank calls are about the lowest form of 'humour' known to man. But it does seem that the public outcry was disproportionate, I can't really comment as I don't live in the UK.
Its true that they never would have done that on a show with Matt. He would have said something about Russell's ego and then they would have hung up. Actually I don't think it would have happened with any of the other guest presenters either (Amstell, Carr ect). They are just both good at saying the wrong thing Brand and Ross. With hilarious results.
Jimmy Carr is right. And as Noel Gallagher said: its so typical..10,000 people get outraged, but only days after it has happened. Plus, im sure that stuff like this has happened before, its just cut out of the show. They could have cut it out and apologised 2 him, without the bandwagon and the media
"As a comedian it is vital that we have the right to criticise anything we like in a free society. Anything except Jonathan Ross or Russell Brand of course, that might affect our careers"
@jimmyfourchannels I agree with rainfallshard's response, I would also add that russell could make an appropriate retort in response to hislop-"as a social commentator we have the right to criticize anything we like, as long as we don't offer anything useful in it's place. You can can make a whole career out of it that way and never be happy"

Jimmy Carr likes the idea of forcing people to pay for something, but he doesn't like the consequences of doing that: censorship.
If he wants freedom, then he should stand up to all violations of freedom, not just the parts that affect him personally. Until then I'll care about my money being taken away for something I don't want, and he can care about his buddy getting fired. When he's ready to work together and get rid of every act of tyranny, I'll be happy to follow suit.
it was only two complaints that shows how whipped up the whole thing was. The papers just needed to sell copy, and the campaign against tv is the gift that keeps giving for them...
Personaly i cant stand Brand, but i hate censorship..........

Jimmy Carr is clearly an intelligent man but I don't completely agree with him. Some of his points about complaints and censorship are valid but I doubt he would find it funny if someone left messages talking about his mum like that.
Its not quite as simple as erasing the messages when those messages are going to be broadcast to millions of people and that the rest of your family are going to hear about them.
There is some truth to your points about the furore making it worse for the family. However I don't understand your first point. The fact it was true left his families private business open to the criticism of the country and if it hadn't been he still wouldn't have wanted to hear his granddaughter talked about in that way.
I see your point. i really do. What people must understand is that andrew sachs didnt want to take the matter further. He was happy to let it die. It should have stopped there! Unfortunately the papers made the whole matter worse to sell more papers and keep their dying medium going for an extra couple of weeks. Quite sad.
Don't you see; thats exactly the point. It shouldn't have been broadcast, but Ross and Brand are risque comics who will often go over the taste boundary. It is an editor, a sensible person, who should be cutting it when they go too far.
You can't blame Ross and Brand because the very thing that made them do what they did is the same thing which makes them beloved entertainers in the first place.
Thank you so much for this sweet little voice of sanity and reason after the absurd over-reaction to the Ross n Russ debacle. Jimmy Carr is such an intelligent, funny guy and, actually, is far more moral than the Daily Mail. Love him. x

Must have been an odd time to be a comedian. He has it spot on though.

It wasn't a prank call... It was a previously arranged scheduled interview which Andrew Sachs didn't have his phone on to participate in.

Hmm a really good, well played out prank call takes a lot of effort and work to pull off. Try it, see if you can do one effectively. It's hard.

I blame Matt Morgan for this! If he was moderating Brand then this wouldn't have happened.
But the real blame lies with the daily mail who clearly have a vendetta against Brand, Ross and basically anything that isn't on radio 4.

A) If it's patently and obviously not true, I still don't see the problem. However, slander/libel is a completely different issue.
B) The furore increased the number of people aware of it exponentially, thus making the complainants responsible for spreading it.
