@TheBookwurm82 I know the story. I am in the group of people that felt it was still a decent climax regardless of the lack of actual action. Tension, my friend. At any rate, I'm almost 100% sure they'll add some more action, like they did for every movie thus far.
The most glaring problem I have with these series (films anyway) is the absence of Catherine Hardwicke, the original director. Sure, it may not have been an Oscar movie - but she did establish the tone, a tone that has not been the same since her leaving the project. She was a huge fan of the novels, she's the one who cast Bella and Edward (give credit!) and since then it's been male directors who have openly commented on not being familiar with the novels.
@exileinbriville All opinion, of course, but I couldn't stand Hardwicke's direction. I will give her credit for properly establishing a tone of small-town mystery but I think that Slade got better acting from the leads and Weitz improved on the series by going in more of a fantasy direction (bolstered by the use of bright, woodsy scenery instead of the blue filter, which imo was overdone). I also disliked her handheld-style of filming. Not to mention her amazingly terrible flashback sequence.
@exileinbriville In addition, her slavish replication of the book's structure deeply hurt the film's climax. NM had this problem as well but the foreshadowing was more competently handled there. It wasn't until this one I felt a true three-act build-up. Lastly, her decision to make the Nomads appear "rock star-like" was an abysmal one (again, in my opinion) because they just looked plain silly and not especially threatening. However, I must say that the final scene at the prom was excellent.
@phantomsdaydreams I thought her romantic scenes were infinitely better. The meadow, the scene in Bella's bedroom, the prom, the restaurant scene, etc. I believe these things are more suited for the target audience. I do think the male directors have a better sense of action (Hardwicke's showdown with James was undeniably weak) but there's something missing in the Bella/Edward angle from the subsequent films that bothers me. Thanks for responding. All your points are really interesting.
@exileinbriville Anytime. I apologize for being undeniably harsh in my criticisms of the film but as I said, it's all opinion and if we can't respect anothers opinion then there's no point in discussion. Oddly, though NM was my second least favorite of the books (BD takes that prize) I think I liked that movie the most. The lush palette of the film and Lautner's inherent likability/relatabily really gave that movie a good chemistry, I thought. Message me if you care to discuss further. =)
@phantomsdaydreams No apologies, I love being able to talk without worrying about stepping on peoples toes. lol. BD was my least favorite book, NM was my favorite, but Twilight was my favorite film? Haha.
@exileinbriville I liked "Twilight" the best. Even though the story is the most simplistic I just find the initial romance and the introduction of the world the most compellling things of the series. "Eclipse" as my second favoite because of the added plot and swift(er) pacing, as well as the resolution of a major plot conflict (Victoria). I did like NM quite a bit but I really disliked the constant reminder of the "hole in her chest". Takes true guts to excise your romantic lead though. Haha
@phantomsdaydreams You really want a book to affect you and I can't forget how much I gasped whenever I turned that page in New Moon and was just blank sheets of paper with the months written on them (signifying Edward's absence) and I was so shocked and devastated haha. It's the slower of the books but taking its nod from Shakespeare it's the most tragic/romantic one.
@kalebknecht Lmao. THIS, I have no answer for. XD I guess because then we wouldn't have a story! Well, that and I guess every other suitor kind underwhelms when the main two featured are willing to give their LIVES for you. Haha Bodily sacrifice > fancy dinners
The main problem I have with this franchise is how they call them "Vampires" and "Werewolves. I mean, hell, I know they were wanting to change up the lore a little bit, but REALLY? Just call them something different. Also, (as you say below... though now I'm, probably some hundredth commenter) the love shit just gets old.
@kalebknecht I don't have any problem with the title of "vampire' and "werewolf" (though the latter are actually shape-shifters) because honestly, the lore isn't that different. There are a lot crazier versions of each floating about cinema and fiction in general. I've seen one where vampires are from space and feed off energy. 0_o I'm just saying. Outside of the sparkling (which really has the same effect of staying out of the sunlight anyway, right?) and no teeth, they aren't that exotic.
@phantomsdaydreams True.... then again, I am a fan of a movie that has a mad scientist who is also a transvestite... And an alien. Yeah, probably shouldn't be saying anything. >.>
@kalebknecht If you are making reference to "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (and I can't IMAGINE what OTHER movie has all of those things XD) then you sir, are my hero of the day. lol That is an awesome movie. It's definitely in my top 5 favorite musicals. How could it not be with Tim Curry? =D
i just watched it today...i thought it was awesome how they shattered like marble too, but it was SOOO friggin mushy! GOD! i am dreading how they manage Breaking Dawn lol
@MyDivaDogCanada Lol Yes, it was terribly mushy but again, that kind of thing comes part in parcel with melodrama. And I honestly have no clue how they'll make BD watchable. To be frank, I thought the fourth book was mostly a disaster. Isolated parts of it (like the wedding, honeymoon, the meeting with Jenks and Jacob taking the wolf pack under his control) were good but on the whole I was not a fan. I just didn't like where the story went. I'm not very excited for the BD movies, personally. =/
my suggestion if you like the whole battle scenes i wouldnt go see breaking dawn because you are going to be highly disappointed.
