is functionalism the same as strain theory? could i criticise functionalism from the strain theory perspective? or would that then be criticising itself? would be very helpful if i could find an answer
I don't believe Durkhiem said that crime was functional in society. I believe he was talking about deviance being functional, and there is a distinct difference.
"Crime is normal, an integral part of all healthy societies" (Durkheim 1893)
Crime (as well as Deviance), can be used for 'Boundary Maintenance', and unite societies members against the criminals (wrongdoers) and promote the value consensus.
@vinababy7 According to the offical AQA A2 text book durkhiem said that CRIME is both functional and universal it has two important positive functions- 1. creates and reinforces boundaries and 2. adaptions and change. he then went on to say when it becomes harmful. when too high or too low but he doesn't explain the right amount!
