Look back in history my friend, Shubert died at 30, Mozart at 36, Chopin at 39, Lucia Popp at 54. If there's a god he took all the best ones for himself.
Basta davvero.
Would like to have more background information of the recording of this aria, the orchestra, and when it was done. By the way, the timbre of Lucia in this aria is just fantastic, unmatched.
Interesting to compare this with Monserrat Caballe's version of 1975. Caballe has much more power and the video is quite mystical: Caballe appears as a great magician. The Popp version is very enchanting though.
Just my opinion but if you're looking for stamina definitely Caballe's interpretation has more of it. Of course her timbre provide this piece with lovely drama.
Agree with you, Popp's version is enchanting might be not as dramatic as many like. Particularly I find it beautiful but not the best; yet Caballe and Popp did a better job than Callas.
There is another version which I find the most beautiful: a rendition by Victoria de los angeles. Within her range of roles, she has one of the most exquisite soprano voices on record. I hesitate to state it, but while Callas might have been the superior actress, delos angeles had the more beautiful voice.
Ah, Victoria de los Angeles had a very beautiful voice indeed; I enjoy that 'sweet' sound she has, and yet, preserving her lyrical sound (sorry if my expressions are not the correct, not very familiar to musical terms). Probably her interpretation is one of the most sensitive ever; particularly I like hers as much as I like Tebaldi's (whose voice got me speechless).
Agree, I wouldn't say Callas timbre was gorgeous, but was a great actress as you stated indeed.
Naturalmente non manca assolutamente nulla! Forse mancano le orecchie a qualcuno!!

A presto!

@eugenell This came from a selection of arias ca 1982 on the Acanta label. Kurt Eichhorn led the Munich Radio Orchestra. I still have the LP.

Her voice is simply brilliant. So smooth and beautiful. Perhaps best version of this selection I've heard.
