Reactions to this were not far from the radical Muslim over reaction to the Muhammad cartoon for sure.. Free speech and tolerance indeed. (how about just a sense of humor?)
At times it can seem that way. It is almost as if free speech is being restricted through fear. What fear? - I'm sure the perception likely resides and differs within the individual. I am dismayed that such a circumstance cannot be good for race relations. It can make it difficult for people trying to get over that proverbial hump of acceptance. (I chose acceptance because I hate the word tolerance. Tolerance suggests there is something wrong that needs to be tolerated - a negative connotation)
We go fishing a lot w/some friends who are white. While camping out of town, we had a camp side fish fry. The town we were in didn't have a Bass Shop Pro, so we went to a local store to get our favorite fish batter. We assumed everybody was familiar with "uncle bucks" (fish batter). The black folks in that town felt that the words "uncle bucks" was a racial slur.
I bring this up to illustrate how crazy things are getting. Folks can't even say Uncle Bucks in public.
I used to live in Philly - most of my life, in fact. When I was a teenager, a restaurant just over the bridge in New Jersey was in the news. The guy who owned the restaurant was named Sam. As a kid, his friends always called him "Sambo". Obviously the name stuck with him. Anyway, the TV news media got involved when an organization sued to have the name changed on the basis of racism. Sadly, my innocense was somewhat spoiled because I had no idea that name was considered slanderous until then.
Oh .. I remember in Texas there was a Sambo restaurant. I think Denny's took it over. Sambos had some darn good food. It's a shame !!!!
In a lot of ways I feel sorry for white folks. They are really backed against the wall & act like they are scared to speak. They have no NAACP, No civil rights groups speaking up for them. I even find myself a lot of times standing up for their civil rights. I told my husband the other day that they need a "Harriet Tubman".
The point I was trying to make here is someone who is truly concerned about racism would recognize not only that this cartoon is racially stereotypical of Obama, but also of white police officers (MLK comes to mind here). On the other hand, someone with an agenda, someone who is moreso a racial divider, not a racial uniter, can only seem to see the one side of the issue (I have to admit that the first person that comes to mind is Al Sharpton).
Opps! The key board 's jumpy today. The 1st time I saw the monkey business cartoon I thought of the woman who was mauled by the chimp. 2nd thing I thought of was Nancy Pelosi. But when the news injected Obama into the picture, I thought it was bit of an over-reach. To be truthful, I chuckled when it was said that Obama was the chimp.
Sorry, but I just couldn't help but laugh.
Since that story broke & Sharpton took the bait, we haven't heard NOTHING from him.
I really didn't see Obama as being the chimp in the cartoon at first either. In retrospect, only after I heard Al Sharpton's interpretation on the news was the connection made for me. I would never have had the need to try and explain this cartoon to my young son had it not been for the publicity created by Rev. Sharpton. Arguably, my son would never have seen it, let alone made such a connection w/o Al's help. But after it was made into a racial issue, I watched as it was made so one-sided.
Why is it OK forb lacks to yell, scream, and call us names, then spout WE are racist? There is so much "reverse racism" it is pathetic! I fear it will only get worse.
