I shudder thinking about the HORRIBLE stuff we did to live mice when working in a lab a few years ago. We played tennis with them, threw them about, chopped them up- their lives were our playthings.
One guy covered a load in oil & pushed them down a slide onto 1sqm ‘hot plate’ with clear Perspex side walls for easy viewing. The poor creatures “danced” in excruciating pain for a few seconds before expiring. The stream of victims continued, dancing round an ever growing pile of charred bodies.

If the hawk is possessed for falconry, it is a vile insult to call the hawk a pet, just as it is an insult to call any falconer a pet keeper. Typically those who possess raptors illegally are the ones who would try to make pets of them, but for the trouble it is worth get a cat.
I don't know why they had the hawk. I didn't go into the possible reasons because I didn't feel it was necessary to make my point. One possibility is that they rescued the hawk as a baby and when it was old enough, they set it free. I had a similar experience with a blue jay which came back for daily visits until 5 years later when the house burned down.

My brother used to feed a red tail that roosted near his work and he wasn't a falconer or anything. These guys can be semi-trained to go after the feeder mouse...

@llamabubbaking, Hawks don't attack pets if humans are near. The man could of been a Falconer, which means he could of train that hawk to attack the mouse easily. I'm a falconer and this could be stage.
