The folk enforcing these ever-increasing rules, restrictions, and harmful policies are doing nothing for the "environment." They just support these ridiculous policies because they can use these policies to increase their power, money, and control. It is pretty simple. Then, they outsource to the "Friends" of San Juans the function of neighborhood spy and self-ordained thought police. With "Friends" like this who needs enemies?
Maybe they should read a little bit about the ADA before opening their mouth! Teddy bears this open to the public has to be accessible, questions not allowed. They could build a ramp into that building for less than $500! I don't know what kind of research they're doing or why they're trying to jack the price up so much. But as they want to be open baby to be accessible!
I know this because I am from Lopez and I have personal ties with the council. I am being honest and I am not against Nick or anything, but there is no absolute way the council would lie!
True, I may not know completely 100%, but I do know the truth.
I'm sorry that this family had to shut down their farm stand. I also believe that these bureaucrats cannot enforce a permit on a private home bible study - that's unconstitutional on both fronts!
Posters defending the bureaucrats here are full of it! Sounds like they have too many inspectors and the regulations to keep them busy and employed. Is there a local food sovereignty movement or is Washington just shilling for the processed food industry that would like us all to buy only their adulterated crap? Read Joel Salatin's excellect book "Everything I want to do is Illegal" for many other examples of government run amok.
Why don't you make the stand "not" open to the public? Make it a membership, a co-op or some such thing.
If it is true that the county has changed its position on a previous interpretation of the law which it is now seeking to impose, and the business made investments based upon the documented contrary prior opinion of the county, then this might be grounds for a lawsuit to recover losses. In my humble non-lawyer opinion.
Of course Nick will disagree! This issue is about him and his side of the story. You should talk to the council. Besides, I'm not against Nick and it's great to have farm stands, I just don't know why whoever made the video would go through this trouble to create biased info about the issue and the council.
The county doesn't need to put a lock on the door of small businesses. Instead they pass pointless regulations and harass people like Nick until they get tired and finally give up. Sad day on Lopez island. The community lost.
1. How would you know the 100% truth? We are turning into a society that is more and more resembling the fictional future in the book "1984", but you are correct that it's not currently 1984
2. His farm is not closed, his farm stand is. So again how on earth would you know what's true or false here?
3. The City Council needs no help to look bad and how do you know the truth again?
The San Juan Island County Council and their staff are out of control! Any excuse they can find to invent bureaucratic hassles as part of their shakedown efforts will be used. Just inflicting harm on local property owners for their own power. How can we trust these people with anything? Common sense political changes is critical.
San Juan County didn't order the Jones Farm closed! Instead, what the county has is an unpredictable process that they say upfront, "We'll work with you." read: pay a permit fee, get into the process, and San Juan County will then have an ever-growing list of requirements--that will bankrupt people like Nick and Sara.
Nick was smart to not engage in an endless, unpredictable and costly process. As he says, he was unwilling to write a blank check to the county.
San Juan County did not order the store to shut down. It has offered, as it has with others in similar positions, to work with the store on common sense and affordable steps it can take to meet code requirements while remaining open.
I guess we are all just too stupid to make choices for ourselves. That's why we need the big county government to come in and regulate us, right? BIG BROTHER at its best!!! Don't give up, Jones Family! We need to get our food from local sources. Fight the fight!

There are many more stories in San Juan County that should be told. Nick Jones is not an isolated case.

Oh, to add one more thing... the council is not out of control! They do not harass anyone at all. I know this since I too am a Lopezian resident.

1. It's not 1984.
2. The description is quite over the top. The county did not harass Nick and it is not thanks to the county that the farm is closed.
3. The facts in this video are not completely true. They just left out the crucial points so the County Council can look bad.
I agree farm stands are great to have and Nick should continue his farm stand, but the info in the video isn't 100% true.
